Baylor May get death penalty

Well if the NCAA can't do anything about scholarships for silence your gonna see a lot more of it.
If you see a paid scholarship as a "bribe", then every single settlement of any lawsuit in the US is a bribe. I don't know if the NCAA has any jurisdiction in this case, but the fact that the school paid with a scholarship instead of cash really makes no difference.

A paid scholarship in exchange for not reporting a crime against you is absolutely a bribe. Not sure how it could be seen as anything else.

That's completely different than a scholarship given as part of a legal settlement.

You want to hear something bat s*** crazy about Baylor? As of now with less than 24 ours to go until signing day, Rivals has them ahead of us in recruiting, and second only to OK in the Big XII. That is subject to change of course. But hey, wth?

Could this mean that the worst has happened and there are no more sanctions to charge them with? Or is Matt Ruhle a lot better coach than Art Briles? I got to admit, I don't understand this.

Its volume. OU has 27 commits, Baylor has 25, OK State 20, Texas 16. Baylor is going to have roster issues and they will be signing large classes for the next few years

We have a lot of talent on campus, so one class won't ruin the show. Texas will win big this year, and recruiting will pick back up. But this class isn't what I expected. I didn't expect Herman to takeover the state, but I thought he would have more juice than that.

I do understand the above replies to me. I just have a hard time believing considering the situation at Baylor that they did this good in recruiting. 3 things concern me:

1. Art Briles never finished ahead of Texas in recruiting. In fact he only had one top 20 class.

2. I wonder if they know something at Baylor that the rest of us don't know. I'm speaking of do they know that the storm has passed and no matter how many more stories come out nothing concrete is going to be done to them.

3. If #2 is correct what if it turns out that Matt Ruhle is a better coach than Art Briles?

Or they know something, that we all know...that a lot of people in this country have fake morals. They are all for grabbing p****.

1st year in and you expect a lot.

But this class isn't what I expected.

Was referring to this comment more than your whole statement. You say you didn't expect for him to take over the whole state but your comment says otherwise.

"but I thought he would have more juice than that."

How much juice?

My bad I just realized this thread has changed subjects so don't reply. I posted something in the Recruiting thread about Tom Herman and his reasoning on this years recruiting.

UT has long used hotties to escort football recruits when visiting the campus (not sure if they still do). They called them "Bevo's Babes" when I was there from 79-85. I know of at least one football player that scored with the Babes.
They are called the Texas Angels now. Look, as a dude that took all 5 of my official visits and 1 "unofficial" visit, trust me when i tell you................... dont let your daughter be a hostess.

The NCAA isn't doing anything. Fear from the NCAA is not what is preventing this stuff from happening at other schools.

My statement does not say otherwise, you are nitpicking. I did not expect him to set the world on fire, but I thought he had more juice than what he showed. If the semantics bother you, and you define things different than me, then this conversation is a waste of my time.

Well he did get a late start. I've said this before and I'll say it again. There's a lot of things that go in with being a first year coach that have nothing to do with football. Things like relocating, finding a new home, uprooting your wife and kids, etc.......

For new coaches the second year in recruiting is much better than the first. Nevertheless, this is a fine group. Remember, the Texas Longhorns always find some good players in their recruiting classes. We now have 4 solid recruiting classes and the future looks bright.

And this better be the last time Baylor finishes ahead of us in recruiting

Penn State set the new threshold.

If you can have a coach rape a a few dozen kids and not call down the death penalty, having some players raping a similar number of adults isn't going to trigger anything.

Hooray for humans.

As awful as the penn state was it was more of an issue(and failure) of the legal authorities than it was for the NCAA. The NCAA is really only designed to handle academic, recruiting and violalatuons of their rules.

The most they have the ability to do is slap Baylor with the "lack of institutional control" and put show cause on Briles. As I said I think they should be able to do something about the scholarships in exchange for silence.

I just don't think they'll go the death penalty route. Seeing as how they haven't in other situations. As far as the penn stste thing goes Sandusky should of been in jail a long time ago and Paterno should of been there with them That situation goes much deeper than the NCAA could ever consider.

There was something about coaches arranging legal services for players. That could be an impermissible benefit. Still not enough for the death penalty.

screw the death penalty...they need to have their acreditation as a place of higher learning pulled. The whole school needs to be disbanded. The whole administration was in on the corruption.

it is like trying to wash a mudball. By the time you finally get it clean there is nothing left.

Houston Chronicle ran front page article on the Baylor regents push back against the Briles camp. This is huge on the Super Bowl week. Every media in the country is in town.

http://www.chron.com/news/houston-t...r-fights-back-against-libel-suit-10904598.php

Then on the Front of the Sports page Jenny Dial Creech buries Briles and the staff.

http://www.houstonchronicle.com/spo...e-and-regents-say-Art-Briles-did-10904097.php

Apparently, the regents were pissed at the continued BS from Briles and his supporters that they did nothing wrong. They released the content of texts that involved Briles and the staff. Very damning

Could the big 12 membership revoke Baylor's membership? Is there a mechnisim for that in the bylaws?

I'm not sure that a "death penalty" or being kicked out of the Big 12 are reasonable punishments in this case. Don't get me wrong, I think what happened at Baylor is disgusting and those responsible should be crushed. Briles, McCaw, Starr, Shilinglaw and any other person found to be directly related should never have jobs where they are required to oversee young men. Their involvement in college athletics should be completely over.

As for Baylor, it seems that they have completely rid themselves of involved staff and have taken an aggressive approach to implementing the changes suggested by Pepper Hamilton. However, they still deserve punishment, which unfortunately will come at the detriment to the players and coaches that are there now and likely had no involvement (but this is often the case for college sports). Without punishment, the message is "if you do something like this, it's okay, all you have to do is fire people if you get caught, there will be no long term punishment". There is clearly enough information for the NCAA to be involved and levy punishment - ie post season ban, loss of scholarships, etc...
