Bowl game prediction thread

Ruh roh. It appears Mizzu just lost their OC to UCF. Sooooooo no josh Heupel in the bowl game for mizzu.

Mizzou just lost Heupel. He’s been named HC at UCF. Bringing Randy Shannon with him as DC. Don’t know what he will be as a HC but Shannon is a smart hire.

So now Barry Odom is HC, OC and DC all rolled up into one. Should be fun. Can we sub him in as a 3rd string LB too?

Remaining draft-eligible juniors expected to play in Texas Bowl

While DeShon Elliott, Connor Williams and Holton Hill have made their decisions known on entering the NFL Draft, several other juniors have not gotten to that point. As Horns247 has continued to report, all signs are pointing towards Malik Jefferson joining his draft-eligible teammates, and will likely forgo his senior season. We have also heard Charles Omenihu, Michael $#@!son and Kris Boyd are weighing their draft options. But it sounds like those guys decisions may not come until after the bowl game. Omenihu, Boyd and $#@!son are all expected to play in the Dec. 27 Texas Bowl vs. Mizzouri, regardless if they decide to take their talents to the NFL, according to sources with knowledge of the situation.

Now, does that mean all three will return for their senior season? Not exactly. Omenihu could turn pro if he receives a third round draft grade, sources told Horns247. As for Boyd, the latest I am hearing is he has yet to make up his mind on what it will take for him to leave early, but the decision is unlikely to come until after the bowl game, per Horns247 sources. Similar to Boyd, $#@!son has not officially made his decision, but last I have heard was he was leaning towards returning for his senior season, according to a source close with $#@!son. The situation is still very fluid, and can obviously change before Dec. 27, but as of today, the plan is for the trio of players to be on the field inside NRG Stadium even if it turns out being their last game playing in a Texas uniform. Gotcha, idk either. I've heard lots of rumors about this staff burning too hot for players. If that's true, grow the f up cupcakes. Welcome to D1 football.

Yeah with change comes people that aren't comfortable with it. Different coaching styles between TH and Strong and I'll bet some of these players don't like how they're talked to or treated. Oh well! Things will work itself out if TH is the coach we're looking for, he'll get his type of players and more than likely they'll believe in his system.

Why they're leaving early?
Yes..... of course.

And btw, we will have one for sure first rounder, Williams. I'm not seeing elliot or hill going in the first round.

They'd have to have one hell of a combine to pull that off.

Something else is afoot here.

Change of culture within the program is probably 1 of the causes.

Can you elaborate?

Serious question - I thought one of Strong's strengths was getting rid of the country club atmosphere or Mack. So what is the change in culture? Clob made reference to "puff puff pass" on a different thread - is that a big issue?

Well supposedly that’s whst got Hill suspended. I seriously doubt he’s the only one on the team doing it. Just the guy that got caught sevreal times

He might have got rid of the "country club atmosphere" but that doesn't mean Strong's philosophy is the same as Tom's. My feeling is that Tom is a little more no excuses attitude and he's probably not as fatherly figure type like Strong was. Strong came across as someone that hand held some players and I don't mean in class or through practice but more the type that just was fatherly. Herman doesn't come across this way at all! That could be difficult to some of these players that like the Strong type. This is only my opinion.

The "puff puff pass" stuff is all over college and pro's that hasn't changed. I'd assume it's as big an issue as it is every where in every college.

It was a very high brow joke (I just did it again) where I turned a phrase, and made a joke.

Puff, puff, pass--- is an old stoner reference about people sitting around a campfire, puffing weed and passing it to the next person.
Hill decided to "puff, puff" and then decided to "pass" on his senior season at Texas. (See what I did there?)

Were he a legit first rounder, I'd be more understanding as to his departure. But he won't be. I doubt he will be a 2nd rounder. Maybe more like 3rd or 4th depending on how well his combine goes. NFL general managers will ask him about the pot and the drug testing alone (3 times caught) will bump him at minimum one round lower. 1 drug test...... meh. But 3!? That's a habit.

The rest of these kids leaving early simply are not ready. If they were ready, we'd have seen MUCH more consistent play out of them all. Without googling, who was our leading sack guy on D? How many did he Have? See what I mean.....?

Kids leaving to be 3rd and 4th rounders is just stupid. Williams will be a legit mid to late first rounder, I can't fault him. The rest of them, simply want out.

Now let's look at the senior transfers. How many were offensive linemen? How many of those were likely to play next year?
If they were unlikely to play here, where our oline was just TERRIBLE, then where are they going to be able to go and actually play? Our line was pathetic. If you can't make a bid to play here, where could You? Rice? Tulane? New Mexico? So you'r leaving Texas to go get your head kicked in for a year at a crappy little school that won't make a bowl game?

It doesn't add up. Why leave Texas to go to a sh!t school where you can play and get curb stomped. Something is making them want to leave........... and I'm going to find out what it is if it hair lips every cannibal on the Congo.

Clob brings up some legit points. I know many people are still in the “honeymoon” stage with Herman but there are several red flags here

Herman being the red flag, his bedside manner suckes and he is not hands on he's a CEO, guess the Regents got it figured out now

Hook'em

Yeah. He wants to be a CEO type coach which is ok. But in order for that to work you have to have a great staff. Including 2 great coordinators.

There have been some "insider" reports that Warhime (OL coach) and Mehringer (WR coach) burn too hot and have rubbed a lot of players the wrong way.

I see it as this--- The guys on the OL that are leaving are seniors with 1 year to play. They've had 3 different OL coaches, 4 different OC's, two different strength coaches. From all accounts they just finished their first "true" off season in last year under McNight. So if you are going to rotational player at best, probably passed up by a young buck, why go through all that again when you already have your degree? Some players just don't love football that much, especially if there's future in it for them.

Now the WR's that are rumor to transfer---- Are they good, yes. Are they being used to their potential, probably not. But in a crowded WR room, which is about to more crowded with the EE's, this doesn't worry me as much.

Transfers are always concerning. And especially when it's the big uglies and we need depth on both sides of the ball. But it's nothing new. It happens all over CFB.

After the sh!t show we've seen the last 4 years, why jump off the boat now? We knew under Strong it was going to be a slow rebuild, but there was too many "what are you doing" moments and he could just never get over the hump. Just think back to all the games this season, how close was this team to pulling out those games with a W. We are almost there. Have patience in Herman.

I believe Herman is a good offensive coordinator. I believe Orlando is a good defensive coordinator. I believe Beck is an average offensive coordinator (on a good day).

I know coaches are only as good as their players (talent & depth). It appears we will be worse off here (talent & depth) next season (than this season). This leads me to believe Texas will be no better next year.

However, I am hoping that new players stay & buy in to Herman’s “system.” Then, we should see improvement in years 3 & 4.

My only question when it comes to rumors of a disconnect... How many 2017 signees are rumored to transfer? Strong changed the culture but there are still some major entitlement issues!

It is becoming more unlikely Malik Jefferson will appear in the Texas Bowl in a few weeks.

From what I heard, Jefferson has told those associated with the program he needs to see a specialist about his turf toe injury. Jefferson will fly to Wisconsin on Monday to see a foot specialist to determine the extent of the ailment. It remains to seen if surgery or rest will be prescribed.

Considering Jefferson intends to turn pro after this season, it is very likely he shuts down playing football at Texas to get physically ready for the NFL combine. If for some reason Jefferson can not perform at the combine, he will have to push back his performance to Texas’ pro day. If he does, that could give potentially undrafted players, like Armanti Foreman, a chance to get a look by assistant NFL coaches and general managers.

We will learn more about Jefferson’s health in the upcoming weeks. (Richardson)

If you are curious about what kind of media coverage you should expect for the Texas Bowl, that answer is not very much.

So far, media members have been told there will be one coach and player availability prior to the game. The tentative date is Dec. 24, a day before the Houston Texans face the Pittsburgh Steelers. The Texans’ media relations staff also handles this game, and NFL reporters do not have team access to teams one day before a game.
When Texas previously appeared in this game, media members received a limited about of time with coaches and players, and it may not change this year. (Richardson)

Kids leaving to be 3rd and 4th rounders has been a trend in the NFL draft for years. We've just haven't had the talent to actually witness it first hand. 3rd and 4th rounders still make a lot of money, hell league minimum players make a lot of money. You aren't barred from returning to college and finishing your degree when your career is over, so other than having to pay for than having to pay out of pocket there is no downside there. The only downside is the lose the opportunity to improve their stock and get more money, but that’s far from a guarantee.

Now the skipping bowl games because you are a 3rd round pick is a recent phenomena. I am not aware if other programs are experiencing this issue. It really sucks for us because we aren't a team with much depth.

Herman is a hardass. Strong wasn't a hardass. He was the players best friend. Strong may or may not have changed the culture of work ethic that was lacking in the late Mack Brown years, but he certainly wasn't coming drill sargent style on the players. Not that you have to do that to run a successful program, but there seems to be a narrative that Strong was thought to be a hardass and that isn't the case.

After Texas was defeated by Texas Tech in a season-ending loss last month, the unhappiness that had been suppressed by Longhorn players surfaced after another disappointing setback.

Well, things are better within the locker room right now.

Running back Chris Warren III did not hesitate to part ways with Texas because he wanted to find happiness at another program. Former team captain Connor Williams became the first junior from this year’s team to announce he will not play in the Texas Bowl on December 27. Williams had to be convinced to play in Texas’ final two games, but after the loss, he decided to skip the bowl game and focus on his NFL career.

Texas safety DeShon Elliott, who was also unhappy with another losing season, told Texas football coach Tom Herman he was leaving, and did not want a discussion about it. To nobody’s surprise, suspended cornerback Holton Hill decided to leave, too. Right now, Texas is waiting for linebacker Malik Jefferson to officially announce his decision, but his stint in Austin is over. In addition, defensive end Charles Omenihu is seemingly waiting to hear back from the college advisory committee before making a decision.

Of course, there are rumors of a mass exodus at Texas after this season. Junior offensive linemen Jack McMillon and Terrell Cuney walked on Senior Day and appear ready to leave the program, but we are waiting for official announcements. We have heard the name of multiple starters and contributors who are unhappy – those reasons vary from playing time to not feeling respected by the staff – but we are hesitant to name them and speculate about their future. We have decided to give these young men time to make their decisions without adding additional spotlighting to their situations while they try to make decisions. After all, sometimes college players just need to blow off some steam at this time of the year or often change their minds.

However, it appears the players are more focused on the big picture now than anything else, which is a positive.

From what I was told, players on this team, even the disgruntled ones, are more focused on finishing this season 7-6 than their unhappiness with a disappointing season. For now, the talk about transferring, or complaining about the program, has ceased.
Instead, I have been told the team does not want to finish with another losing record. Players have been sharp and attentive during practice. Nobody is complaining about the program. Guys just want to win and not close out the season with another loss. (Richardson)

None that I know of. Not that I know anything regardless.

Saw on twitter the comparisons between UT and Miami this season. UT at 6-6 and the U at 10-2 were almost identical. Great defense, below average Offense, bad OL. But the U was significantly better in- Less Penalties, and TO's. Oh what could have been.....

Did Miami face as many bad defenses as we did? It just seems like we have to be on another level of inept on offense when Tech shuts us down.
