The Texas Longhorns have been picking up commitments at a dizzying pace of late, and the trend continued on Friday with the Longhorns landing a pledge from their second tight end in the 2021 class.
Everman tight end Juan Davis is the latest to add his name to the Texas commitment list, giving the UT staff a pledge while in Austin for Friday’s Stars at Night camp.
Davis is classified as an athlete by Rivals.com since he does a little bit of everything in high school – including lining up wide and working at quarterback - but at 6-3 and 222 pounds, his combination size, speed, athleticism and catching ability make him a likely tight end at the next level.
“I think I can show them everything I have,” Davis said prior to his arrival for Friday’s night camp. “Just my size. I don’t have the best speed, but I have good hands.”
An eventual switch to tight end will be new for Davis, who has never played the position in a traditional role. But he feels his versatility will help him be successful.
“I’ve never played tight end before. But I think I can do a lot of good things,” Davis said.
Despite his impressive size and athleticism, Davis has flown a bit under the radar with his recruitment. He held offers from Texas, Baylor and Southern Miss, and said the Longhorns were the school showing him the most interest. UT tight ends coach Derek Warehime established a good relationship with Davis, and Texas’ suddenly tight numbers at the tight end position in the 2021 class (Lake McRee committed a couple weeks ago) sped up Davis’ decision.
“What really made me want to commit was my high school coach got a text from coach Warehime. He said they already have a 2021 commit and they only have spot left,” Davis said.
Davis becomes the Longhorns’ fifth pledge of the 2021 class and their third this week. With his commitment now in the past, Davis said he’s shutting the recruiting process down completely.
“I’m done,” he said.
