Briles offers his opinion :

Just curious though, MM, what about Briles dishonestly sandbagging us in 2008 during that tiebreaker in the coaches poll where he put us WAY low to help out Stoops? That didn't leave a bad taste in your mouth about the man's character? I mean the rape enabling aside...
OU was clearly a better team in his opinion at the end of the year and he voted accordingly. Everyone else in the country agreed IIRC.

There is one thing about the 2008 story. Yes, Briles voted against us. And his expansion about how student trainers did the voting is ridiculous. AB is a grown man, a lifelong Texan, which means he understood what was at stake.

That said it was 7 years ago. But nobody here remembers who else voted for Oklahoma. Here are some of the names.

Gary Patterson - they played OK that year, got blown out. I guess he didn't bother to watch film of the RRR.
Mike Sherman - we beat the aggies far worse than OK did, 40 points and we called off the dogs in the third quarter. You know it was the last game of the season and the story over who was going to get selected was hot. Looking back we should have. MB did not like running up the score but it was a&m nobody would have held it against him.
Kevin Sumlin
Bo Pellini - he's been Stoops homeboy since they grew up together in Youngstown, Ohio. They played on the same hs team, and both dad's coached together. Obviously he was not going to be objective.

Fellas, what I'm trying to say here was that looking back, the deck was attacked against us. For some reason these people see Texas as arrogant and we are to some degree. But Oklahoma has never been even remotely close to humble and is obvious these people have never noticed this or hated Texas to much to care.

But it did, as they like to say in massage parlors, have a happy ending. We went on to the FB and beat tOSU in a one for the ages thriller. OK went on to lose again a BCS title game.

Well put and great points, cali.

No Oklahoma was not the better team. But at the end of the season we did not try to run up the score. In our last three games we played Kansas, Baylor back when they were still terrible, and a mediocre aggie team. We won all the games easily. But MB was well known for not running up the score. In the end it came back to haunt us.

But Stoops is well known for running up the score and he did so in OK's last two games. These coaches didn't really bother to watch the games all they saw was the box scores.

Also MB was from a generation of coaches who thought it was classless to run up the score. Stoops is from a different generation. And in today's college fb there's no such thing as running up the store only the other team gave up. And ignorant voters who don't watch the games online look at those final scores and think wow they must have a heckuva team and don't bother to know how bad the losing team was.

Perhaps Stoops understanding you needed style points made it appear that OU was the better team at the end of the year. Regardless I believe pretty much everyone else in the country agreed with the final standings. There is always 2 sides and they'll never agree.

I don't remember anybody other than Holtz saying Texas should be left out. I wouldn't fault someone for ranking Florida or USC higher than Texas or OU, but when you win by 10 on a neutral field, you should be ranked higher.
Hey blakebellbaldfaceliar, care to eat crow now or later? :D

He is not "blakebell"/whoever. Scholz, come on man. Stop arguing with EVERY poster on here who doesn't have your take on things. You don't need to be such an antagonistic person. Can't you ever try being polite, respectful and tolerant of other people's position when if differs from yours? Everyone isn't a "liar or dishonest". Show some class and stop with all of that BS.

Isn't the big beef with Briles not that he put OU 1st, but that he voted UT 6th? Reasonable people could disagree on no. 1, but 6th?

Saying everyone agreed that OU was better is the opposite of the truth but ok.

Your show. When I encounter a bald faced liar, I call them out. That's online or in person.

All I'm asking is that you please stop being so confrontational on here and tone it down. Thanks.

He voted UT 5th, along with Leach and a handful of other coaches associated with Stoops. No coach voted UT lower than 5th.

Art Briles -- OU 1, Texas 5
Gene Chizik -- Texas 1, OU 2
Mack Brown -- Florida 1, Texas 2, OU 3
Mark Dantonio -- OU 1, Texas 5
Mike Leach -- OU 1, Texas 5
Howard Schnellenberger -- OU 2, Texas 4
Urban Meyer -- Texas 4, Florida 1

Briles has also claimed that he didn't personally vote on the poll at all, but handed it off to an unnamed underling as was his practice, when it was brought up while Baylor was battling TCU for the last playoff spot and TCU had the head to head victory, but the computers had Baylor ahead. In the end, Ohio State jumped both, so I guess it all worked out.

Does seem odd that so many in the Stoops coaching tree uniformly voted UT 5th in that poll, but who knows...

Hook 'em

Any normal person would not use an analogy to bank fraud and identity theft when paying a compliment. That said, yes, it does appear to be an obtuse compliment.

Mack Brown actually voted his own team second? Seriously? And Urban Meyer voted his own team number one?

I never knew this. Heck, Mack I'm more mad at you than any of the other coaches.

I guess it depends on which reference point you view that conversation. We, as Longhorn fans, don't like it because he is working counter to our interests. However, in all honesty, it is very common and wise to seek advice from a mentor. Briles gave him advice on a legitimate assessment of the situation if the above is accurate. It is not the best of situations at Texas and entering the program at this point has many risks. Briles' advice doesn't bother me for that reason, and in fact, this event revealed Gilbert's decision making. His approach impressed me and he handled it nicely.

There obviously was.....

Bell....sometimes you make sense....in this case you do not...Texas lost on the road to a top 10 team by the fact of a dropped int....No debate there....and this after a three(or was it 4) week stretch of top ten teams back to back to back.....couple this with Bryles being a snake and you got the right to get embarrassed by USC. Lets call this like it was. Dont get all noble and act like you actually think you deserved the chance. You got Tech at home after a more favorable scheduling.

I accecpt that we did not get the game....we had the opportunity to take care of business and we did not. I accecpt that you were named conference champs even though we beat you. What I cant abide by is you acting like you deserved it.

Not to mention it was viewed as so ridiculous and incorrect of an outcome that the conference voted to change the tiebreaker rule afterward. Much like another laughable title the $ooners claim in 2012 as"co-champs" after KSU whipped them h2h. That was rule was changed afterward as well.
