I keep hearing conflicting information on Bru McCoy's plans ... there's been talk that McCoy is going to sign with either Texas or USC this week and keep it silent until he announces on January 5, and there's been talk that he's not going to sign a LOI and just make his announcement on January 5 at the All-American Bowl. Hell, there's even been rumor that he has already signed a LOI (I don't buy that).

I checked with his father, who told me the initial plan was for Bru to go ahead and sign behind the scenes and then announce on January 5, but "as of now he's holding off" on signing.

"Been a very emotional time," Mr. McCoy said. "Just wrapped up his final yesterday evening. Now we can focus on just him."

This one is still too close to call with any sort of real confidence. Different people I've talked to seem to think McCoy is leaning different directions. Texas will have to overcome a lot if it's going to win out on this one (mainly proximity, lifelong affinity for USC and Mater Dei teammates at USC) but the UT staff has done an incredible job here to give Texas a legitimate chance.

One thing I've heard ... and some of this is hard to fully vet ... is that McCoy and his family have concerns about the possibility that Kliff Kingsbury may not be at USC for long (which could also impact Clay Helton's long-term future). There's rumor that Kingsbury could still be in play for an NFL job, and I'm sure the family is well aware of that speculation. Whereas at Texas, the family is completely comfortable with the staff stability, not to mention the strong relationships the McCoys have built up with Tom Herman, Drew Mehringer and Bryan Carrington.
