Cal Texas Game

If I remember correctly Burt and Foreman can both run but neither are super burners, is that right? Are the Johnsons (who hurt us last year) back?

John Burt is one of the fastest guys in CFB, so yeah I'd call him a super burner. He only won trophies in track and field. And also burned guys on the football field as a true frosh.

http://www.barkingcarnival.com/2016...d-to-nfl-coms-list-of-fastest-college-players

Daje Johnson is gone and he did alright vs you last year 2 carries for 6 yds and 5 catches for 145yds. The RB Kirk Johnson is like our 4th string RB who didn't play in the Cal game. His younger brother is nicknamed Baby Megatron, and is a true frosh WR who played HS in the state of California.

Look the Cal/UT game is no gimme for either team. But last year we started a RS frosh QB in his first game and he lit your D up to the tune of 527 yds and our O had 650yds to your 548. You clearly should take a step back on O losing Goff. And who knows where our O stands but I feel better about it today with our new OC than I did before that game last year. And we were a made XP away from winning that game.

I just don't see where any fan, especially a Cal fan could call that game a lock.

I think the defense you cited would play into Cal's hands. We run a much more vertical offense than does Texas Tech (or at least we did before Spavital got here). Tons of big plays and a lot less of the crossing routes and WR screens to move the chains. We also run the ball a lot more than TTech or WSU and will run the ball even more this year given the OL and the returning backs. The defenses that are likely to give us fits are those that can drop 6-7 into coverage and mix coverages, taking away the deep ball, forcing INTs and then relying on a strong front 4 and good tackling on the underneath stuff. And as you say (and is always the case) playing tough in the red zone. Cal's offensive system can struggle in the red zone as we have no traditional TE and though we do use a FB, it's easier to solve for on a short field.
My point is that last year our coaches tried to outscore Cal. Instead of trying to control the pace, we tried to match Cal's pace. Our team was not ready for a track meet, but damn near won it anyway.
Forcing interceptions isn't a real strategy, or every team would play the "force an interception" defense. The reality for most college teams is you have weaknesses you have to mask, which on defense, usually means forcing either the pass or the run. On defense, our secondary should be a strength. We can take some chances between the 20's and not have to worry too much about getting burned.
On offense, especially that early in the season, teams will be seeing a heavy dose of runs, which from what I have seen, Cal doesn't have much of a chance to stop.
Like I said, this strategy has been a winning strategy for a couple of decades against Tech, who just like Cal, just wants to win a track meet.

Don't we have 4 guys who have run sub 11 seconds in the 100 meter dash.

Shouldn't there be a question mark after that?

As in hell yes we have about 10 - 15 guys on the team that run a sub 11 100 m.

Just our off the top of my head we have:

Chris Boyd
Antwan Davis
Sheroid Evans
Holton Hill
Eric Cuffee
Jerrod Heard
John Burt
Armani Foreman
Devin Duvernay
Curtis Davion
Jacory Warrick

Not sure but I also think
PJ Locke III
Tristian Houston

Sorry I was thinking 4 receivers that are all in the 10.30-10.60 that actually had been clocked that fast running track in high school or college. I know Burt ran 13.6 in the 110 hurdles in high school and qualified for the NCAA outdoor championship with a 13.9 this year. I thought 2 of the incoming freshman ran some pretty impressive 100 times in high school this year

I missed that 110 Hurdle time - He's a super burner. I saw his 11.1 100M PR in HS and thought fast but not super fast but that hurdle time is ridiculous.

To be clear, I never called this game a lock, far from it. I said it would be a tight game. Unlike many Longhorn fans here who seem to believe that winning on the road against Cal is a near given.

You guys have some serious burners on this team with Duvernay, Davion, Burt, Davis, Boyd and Evans - I'm not sure any team in the US has six players as fast. The rest of the guys I'm sure are fast as well, just not captured as sub 11 seconds by Athletic.net (a good but not definitive source).

Locke has run a 10.88, Houston is a 11 second plus guy

Jefferson just turned in a ridiculous SPARQ test. 4.38 40, 4.19 shuttle, and 39.7-inch vert. #TheOpening

That was electronically timed.

Malik ran an electronically timed 11.05 100 meter in HS.

Webb has been named the starting QB.

Killed it through first three days of practice. Big arm, very quick release, absolute command of the offense and he won over teammates with his work ethic and leadership style. Good to know this early to increase reps especially given our younger WR corps.

Cal fans are excited about the potential to have an elite QB for the 2nd season in a row. Also interesting to note how many Klingsbury QBs may be among nations best this year with Mahones, Mayfield and Webb.

Webb is nice. Nothing special. You will see.

Makes sense - His only full healthy season was as a frosh and then he got hurt as a Soph. Like most QBs, I'm sure he hasn't improved with time and with his health back 100%.

Dude wasnt even the best QB at tech when he was there... and he was scaredof competition which is why he bailed. Congrats on the primadonna QB with average football IQ and a decent arm.... there is a reason he transferred somewhere he didnt really have to compete to get a starting job.... im just saying. we watched this kid flame out at Tech in the Big 12..... but what we would we know.... we just saw his career start and got to watch him actually PLAY in games...

You likely know him far better than I. The narrative I've heard is that he had a great frosh year then got hurt both shoulder and ankle during a mediocre sophomore campaign. He missed the following Spring and then was beat out the next Fall by Mahomes in a very close competition. Kingsbury told our staff the decision came down to who had more eligibility left. All grad transfers look for schools where the likelihood of playing is high so makes sense to evaluate opportunities that way, no?

BTW, it's not like Mahomes is chopped liver. And Mayfield turned out okay after getting beat out at Tech as well.

Honestly, fill me in on whether the story I'm getting is BS.

TBH - Webb definitely has talent or he wouldnt be a Div I QB..... but he honestly wasnt even the best of the 3 headed monster in Tech.... im sure he has some upside to him and can be a good serviceable QB for yall, but I wouldnt put too much stock in him being great... if for no other reason than the injury aspects that are sure to play a part mentally and even physically to a degree....

I could be wrong on all of that... but I can say with 100% faith in being right that Webb is nowhere NEAR what Goff was...... but he should at least get you to a mid teir bowl at least..... which is more than we have had the last couple years. lol

Gotta take what is said here with a grain of salt buddy... lol you are a visitor, and therefor prime target for ribbing... but you have been a cool poster to this point so nobody is trying to break your balls... just have some fun with ya and talk a little football. ;)

I think you might have Davis Webb confused with Baker Mayfield on some things. Webb is absolutely not a prima donna in anyway. He never complained throughout any QB competition while at Tech. He was the starter and suffered an injury at OSU. Mahommes stepped in and took his job. Davis Webb never complained about losing his job. He was always extremely supportive of Mahommes.

Webb graduated and decided to transfer so that he could have one more year as college QB. Coach Kingsbury had nothing but good things to say about Webb. He even said Webb was the hardest worker he had ever coached. He spent HOURS in the film room, even after losing his starting job to Mahommes. Davis Webb was one of the most well players on the Tech team. Tech fans wished nothing but good things for Webb when he announced his transfer. He didn't transfer because of a bad attitude, he transferred because he had his degree and he wanted one more chance to play.

He's not going to light it up at Cal. He's a decent QB, but not great. But he will be a great teammate. College football would be better off with more guys like Davis Webb and less guys like Baker Mayfield.

You may very well be right about me having them mixed up. I just know Webb is no Goff... ;) aside from that we will have to see how he fares...

He's definitely no Goff, but not many people are. He has a chance to get drafted. He'll certainly be no worse than Coker was for us last year, and he got drafted.

I'm telling you guys-- if we can't beat cal-- burn it down.

Just in the last 10-15 years, we've had 3 1st rounders at QB with Rodgers, Goff and Boller. We're not strangers to great QB play. BTW, we go to Australia, then get a week off then play San Diego State then host Texas. Jet lag isn't going to be an issue.

Went to our full pads practice yesterday. If Texas can find a good offense with an above average OL and QB play then you will score a lot of points. Our defense is already banged up a week into camp and we just don't have enough jumbo athletes or explosive pass rushers on the DL.

Offensively, we're going to give you all you want. Webb's the real deal, the best QB I've seen in a Cal practice in 20 years not named Goff and Rodgers. Release, arm, accuracy and especially the touch on the deep ball. Our OL looks 8 deep and the best we've had in awhile. Tons of speed at RB and WR.

I think the game could easily be a shootout just like we saw last year.

I think Webb will throw 2 INTs. One to a DB and the other to the LB. I really wanted to say 3 INTS but trying to give him a little credit.

How many will Buechele throw? Sounds like Texas will be much improved and tons of talent on the roster but will you guys be dominant at the LOS? OL and DL have questions, no? I like our OL vs. your DL a lot. Bottom line, I can't imagine either team being favored by many points. 3-5 maybe.

I think our Oline will be strong. They should open up the run game which will create a lot of one on one's in the passing game. Our DB are as solid as you can get. I think Hill will have a pick. I want to say Davis also. Malik will get a IN or a force fumble or both.

Win 6-8 games a year with an air raid style offense and lack real defense.

Yup, they're similar.

Raiders are stuck in neutral, Cal is on its way back up - 1 win to 5 wins to 8 wins to X wins.

Aren't you guys now running a similar offense to everyone else in college football not named Stanford, Michigan or LSU? And by the way, both Texas and Cal gave up 30 points a game on defense so I'd be careful throwing rocks. Though to your point TTech gave up 43+ so once again Cal is more like Texas than Texas Tech.
