Cal Texas Game

Rocks? Charlie is defense, it was top 25 the year before. It will be significantly improved this season, you can't say the same for Cal... But hey, we were talking Tech/Cal.

I wouldn't want to compare my squad to last years Texas squad, lol. The worst defense in Texas program history with freshmen all over the field.

As for offense, it will be similar to the veer-n-shoot that Briles developed. Nothing like Tech/Cal, a Leach tree of offense.

Cal is nothing like Texas, nor will they ever be. Never in their history unless we're talking pre 1950.

My point isn't that Cal is Texas when it comes to our football programs historically but rather that right now, we're a lot closer to Texas than Texas Tech. As for the Leach coaching tree, Dykes runs the ball A LOT more, we'll be close to 50/50 on snaps this year. And our defense, though bad last year was still light years better than Techs. And hard to imagine it doesn't improve again. We're certainly deeper, faster and more athletic overall with the third year in a defensive system.

We'll revisit these thoughts after the game.

Sonny Dykes is a Mike Leach student, his offense is called the Bear Raid (air raid) and they run a 4-3 defense. Cal is more similar to Tech from top to bottom.

Strong will run a multiple scheme offense based off the veer-n-shoot with power run being the bread and butter, Texas also runs multiple schemes on defense with 3-3-5 being Strong' bread and butter.

Raiders are stuck in neutral, Cal is on its way back up - 1 win to 5 wins to 8 wins to X wins.

Aren't you guys now running a similar offense to everyone else in college football not named Stanford, Michigan or LSU? And by the way, both Texas and Cal gave up 30 points a game on defense so I'd be careful throwing rocks. Though to your point TTech gave up 43+ so once again Cal is more like Texas than Texas Tech.
You guys give up 30+ points a game with a stud NFL QB. UT gave up 30+ with a below/average QB, meaning UT defense was on the field along time. Cal and TT run a similar type of offense. Which is stated that cal are pretty much the same. Pass, pass, pass and then run. UT and Cal is no way similar last year. Plus the PAC wasn't as strong as the Big12. So you guys got ran on by much weaker teams then what UT faced except KU. I think cal should improve but don't think they are going to a championship. PERIOD. UT will have a better shot than Cal. That's saying alot lol

Is Carlos Strickland a big loss?

Not really. He was playing better and was certainly in the mix to be in the two deeps at WR (top 8-10 group). His size and physicality were a nice addition to the WR corps so we would have much preferred him to stay as he could have become a great player in a season or two.

That said, he was not going to start or be among our top 4-6 kids this year. And we have some bigger bodies ahead of him in Raymond Hudson and Jordan Veasy as well as a young kid named Jordan Duncan. WR is our deepest position on the team and the one with the most obvious talent.

Hey hoopfan, still think replacing Goff and your top 6 receivers isn't that big a deal? How about Spav?

Offensively, we're going to give you all you want. Webb's the real deal, the best QB I've seen in a Cal practice in 20 years not named Goff and Rodgers. Release, arm, accuracy and especially the touch on the deep ball. Our OL looks 8 deep and the best we've had in awhile. Tons of speed at RB and WR.

Oops. Turns out they've been practicing against a defense that is even worse than last year's.

We had this happen in 2010. Going into the season, Mack was saying it was the best defense he's ever had. Turned out it the defense was practicing against the worst offense he had in ~20 years.

Cal good. Not great, but better than the flaming pineapples.

They maybe be small, but at least they are slow.
Seriously, Cal looks really weak defensively. Hard to tell on offense, as Hawaii has no depth or talent in the front 7. Texas can just run it down Cal's throat. Or give the QB some confidence, as Hawaii has guys running wide open.

You really think Cal looks good?
You ride on an airplane for 15 hours and then play a football game where you drop 34 in the first two quarters. I don't care if you're playing the Sydney school for the blind. 15 hours on a flight and scoring 34 in 2 quarters is cool.

"But wait" you say..... "Hawaii flew 11 hours so they must be tired too!".

Newsflash: Hawaii logs more miles annually than any other team. They are in HAWAII.

It was not an impressive opener for my Bears. Good news is that Offensively, we were very vanilla on purpose and still had a strong showing. Webb was shaky early but settled down nicely. Our WR group was the strongest positional unit on the field last night. Our OL was very good in pass protection but given the competition underwhelming relative to expectations with our run blocking. Given how many new faces were out there, the skinnied up playbook and the travel, the offense showed enough to demonstrate this will be a very good unit going forward.

Special teams were solid as well.

Defense? Not so much. Pathetic performance. Regardless of how simple we kept our schemes and the travel, we stunk it up. We played slow and tenatively. Our DL couldn't stuff the run or rush the passer. Our LB crew looked lost mentally. Some bright spots in the secondary and a lot of missed tackles as well. We forced a bunch of TOs and we had a lot of new faces out there so hopefully things improve MARKEDLY.

Hopefully we take a step forward against a solid SDSU squad on the road in two weeks.
