HOUSTON - Texas coach Charlie Strong spoke to a small number of media numbers prior to a speaking engagement at the Touchdown Club of Houston on Friday.

Obviously, Strong discussed the possibility of Texas renewing its rivalry with Texas A&M in the future. In addition, here are the other topics Strong discussed during his brief media session:

- Shane Buechele came in and competed well, according to Strong. However, he noted each quarterback competed during the spring: “The competition is still there. That’s what you like now. You have competition at different positions.”

- One topic Strong did not want to address is pursing Baylor signees seeking who could be released from their letter of intent. Strong said, “I haven’t even thought about it because I have a team now. We have to worry about what we have right now.” When asked if Texas had spots open for Baylor players, Strong said, “I’ve looked at the numbers. We have some numbers there. I just got to worry about what we have.”

- Jerrod Heard did not participate in the spring game due to a shoulder injury, but Strong said the quarterback is back at 100 percent right now. Strong expects Heard to compete for the open position when training camp begins in August.

- Strong said Marcel Southall and Erick Fowler are still working academically to eventually enroll at Texas. He said at some point, they will both make it to campus.

- Strong was asked about satellite camps and said his staff will be in Houston on Thursday and Dallas on Friday: “You get a chance to go into different cities now, and you’re able to get off campus. We’re going to bring our coaching staff and get a chance to work with the young men here in Houston. Then we go to Dallas the next day. We also have our own camps going on right now.” Strong also said players who are being recruited by Texas are not attending satellite camps, and he is not expecting to get a better glimpse of players.

- When asked about his defense, Strong said, “We have to improve on defense. We weren’t very good last year on defense. I’ve always been someone that believed if you’re going to win a championship, you got to win it on defense. We have to play much better than what we played last season. That isn’t our standard, and our coaches understand that. We have to get better. We have to be able to stop people. You look at it, we have to be able to tackle better, get off the field on third down. Our red zone was just awful. We know that. We have to improve.”

- Strong said with three recruiting classes under his belt, the kids understand what is expected from him and the staff.
