Dave South retiring

Love it! The best time to listen to South is when a&m is getting their teeth kicked in just to hear him dejectedly calling the beat down. =)roll

His call when Baylor beat aggy and Fran ("a better gameday coach than Bob Stoops and a better recruiter than Mack Brown") in OT on a two-point conversion in 2004 was magnificent. But maybe "call" isn't the right word. If memory serves, Dave was dead silent for quite a long time after the completion. aggy fans knew, of course, that this meant they'd just been drop-kicked.

I had lasic surgery done in 1997 in howdy town. He was one of the ppl in the lobby that day getting his eyes done as well. Seemed like a nice guy but--- he can still eat sh!t.

My guess is he can't take it anymore. Sumlin and Co.weren't the answer and there is only so much hope one can tolerate.

I'm not a fan of South's at all. In any kind of sports reporting/broadcasting it is considered unprofessional to show bias when doing your job. South breaks this code during every broadcast, referring to aggy as "us and "we", and referring to the opposing team as "them", and showing blatantly obvious bias towards a&m. He has this smug, unjustifiable arrogance about him.

He constantly butchers play by play by making erroneous calls on "catches", when they guy dropped the ball, or saying "he dropped it", when he actually caught it, fumbles, etc. They guy is about as bad as it gets in the broadcasting industry, if you've ever listed to someone else call a game by comparison. As I said previously, the best broadcast of South's to listen to is when aggy is losing and things aren't going their way. Pure gold! He'll be missed, solely for the entertainment. :D

I think it is okay (and I like it) when the play by play guy turns up his excitement when his own team scores... but, to say "we and them" is definitely unprofessionaly ( a very aggy thing to do).

I hate the guy - impossible to figure out what is going on in the game, but .... one year Baylor led ATM the whole game, then the Aggies took the lead with a few minutes to go. When the Aggies scored, he said "thanks Baylor for keeping the lead warm." So cocky, but I had to laugh.

Has anyone on here ever seen Dave South in person? The man is 5'4" in a good pair of elevator shoes.

Yes, both of my nephews played for aggy. I did everything that I could to talk them into going to Texas, but Mackovic helped recruit them to a&m with his in-house visit being the arrogant prick that he is.

Being the football freak that I am, if I'm driving in the car during football season, I always find a game on the radio in the car. Also, if aggy is getting a beat down, I've been known to turn the radio on even at home just to enjoy South's misery, lol. So there you go.

Was told today that he is a Baylor grad...hard to fathom.

Dave South is apparently one of the nicest people you'll ever meet.
He has a very distinctive radio voice that brings back nostalgia for me.....I will miss that.
That's about where the "good" parts end.

The guy has lost any ability to call a game, winning or losing.

I'm an Aggie who lives out of state. So a game or 2 per year is not televised in my area. Listening to Dave South is tough. Seldom know down and distance, almost never know who made the tackle. I don't mind homerism, but going overboard makes it hard to get a feel for what is actually happening. He is probably a good guy, but I am glad he is almost gone.

And if the other team scores you will go to a commercial before you find out who, and how. He might call the extra point before he describes the touchdown.....if that even happens.

When the news came out my dad told me that he had just heard Dave South had announced he was retiring. I said "How could you tell? Are you sure it wasn't just a confusing touchdown?"

The dude should not commentate. Period. He cannot play by play. He's occasionally half decent at color commentary but injects far too much bias. Word on campus was always that he stuck around so long because he knew the right people to go to bat for him and they played him up as this Texas A&M institution that "made" the game day experience.

Classic example. Turkey Day, 1991 (I think). We had to leave a family gathering early to get back home for a sick family member and were listening to the radio. Sometime early on I remember my dad cursing at the radio and telling my mom to find the station with the Longhorn radio broadcast.

The line that stuck with me was "It's been 15 minutes and I don't even know who is winnin......oh come on what the f*ck Dave?!?!"

It was something like this. (and I'm approximating because with two functional eyes and a brain I am unable to synthesize ineptitude to as finely tuned a degree as Dave)

"Ball snapped, he's going down the line (who? What line?). Steps up in the pocket (Oh, it's the QB, got it) he breaks inside past the defender (alrigh! Go Bucky!) He's a fast one! Big hit! The ball is out! (oh no!) The ball is on the ground. (crap!) Pass incomplete (wait, when did he throw it?)

Any Aggies who defend Dave South to you, know you're a Longhorn so they don't want to give you any room to mock them. But as soon as you walk around the corner, every single one of them mutters "F*cking South" in a form of perplexed disbelief.

Because every time you say his name your brain has to remember that a guy like that exists on this planet. And humans haven't yet evolved to be able to deal with that.

So I guess in answer to your question.......Nah, I'm not too broken up about it.

I'll never forget listening to an aggie/TT game. The aggies kicked a fg on the last play of the game to. win. Thing was it was at most a 15 yard fg. My 11 year old grand son can kick a 15 yard fg. South was freaking out, he made it sound like it was 70 yards and they had just won the nc. For goodness sake it was only TT. Priceless.
