The first game at Texas Memorial Stadium was played exactly 100 years ago today.

The Austin Stateman's account of the game is pretty interesting. I truncated it because I didn't want to post the very next sentence, which would have resulted in a whole bunch of comments/fighting/controversy that I don't have time for this afternoon. But here it is ...

"Baylor and Bridges yesterday achieved their greatest triumph. Texas was beaten, decisively, overwhelmingly, unquestionably licked. And the little mentor of the Bruins grinned happily as he rubbed his hands over the head of the negro "good luck mascot" who sat next him, mumbling all the while queer incantations, while his powerful machine of the gridiron, hitting smoothly on all eleven "cylinders," ploughed through the Texas line. This negro is always at Bridges' side during the progress of an important game and right vigorously was his head massaged yesterday."

Seriously ... WTF? This was just 100 years ago!

If you'd like to read the entire account of the game, it's here:

Please note that, if the text is too small, you can use the "zoom" button. Also note that the account of the game continues on page 8 of the newspaper. Interesting that one of the Texas players was named Shearer. I wonder if he was any relation to Brad Shearer.
