Watching them just ass rape Fresno st right now. They are weak on D-- but have decent weapons on offense.

Once home skillet gets him some 5 star skill players, watch the fvck out.

He’s got some 5 star skill players. He got the reigning Bilentnikoff winner in Jordan Addison. I already said before the season I wouldn’t be surprised if they make the playoffs.

That defense is typical Riley soft. That offense is good. Nothing changed. Williams is a dang good qb. I didn’t see the 2nd half but 1st half was fairly close game.

They should be 11-1 at the absolute worst based on that schedule. If they beat Utah then they will be 12-0
Yup.

They need some ends that were born with their ears pinned back and some LBs with some scoots (number 44 Samoa guy is a ball hawk but he's slow as fvck) and their D will be solid enough to make a run.
On offense, they're a RB, a TE and a slot receiver away from averaging 50 points a game. Oline isn't terrible but can improve.

If these cats make it anywhere NEAR the playoffs this year, watch out. Their transfer portal will be jammed with 5 star dudes ready to play.

They have that one linebacker that is 6’7” and weighs about 185

I'll bet they spend 85% of their practice time on offense.
Nah. D gets their reps. They just aren't as talented as the O.

Trust me.... USC is just a few pieces away from being REALLY scary.

It says a lot about LR as a coach that he can come in and have a 10+ win season in his first year after all the coaches they have through since Pete Carroll. Their defense might not be very good but all LR does is finish seasons with 10+ wins.

With all that talent out there on the west coast he’s going to have no shortage of talent to pick through. He’s going to put USC back on the map. Those old USC teams of the early 2000’s never had a dominant defense.

I told you..... they need speed at LB. I'm telling you-- USC has the highest ceiling of any team that has yet to make the playoffs.

Riley could fvck around and have an absolute monster on his hands very soon.
It certainly helps that the PAC 12 is so weak.

Ehhhh....... that 2004 D was preeeeeeeeeeety stout.

Ranked #3

Next year (2005) they gave up more points but we did drop 40+ on them in the natty which kinda skewed their averages.

Well when you poach 5* players from your previous school including a 5* starting qb and have an open transfer portal it’s a little different situation than previous coaches had. Riley has a great offensive system but had some built in advantages going into USC

That defense had the 2 all American DT’s and that linebacker from hell, Tatupa I think?

He did everything within the rules. But I know it pains you Sooners to see him having any success because now you can’t say he was set up for success by Bob Stoops. Maybe he’s just a really good coach.

2 of the last 3 national championships have been won by teams that had elite offenses and average defenses. You don’t have to have a juggernaut defense if your offense can put up 40+ a game. LSU in 2019 and Bama in 2020. Of course it does help to have a good defense though.

Didn’t he poach other 5* QB’s when he was at OU? Who cares lol.

On the way out the door? Nope. All transferred in and all were backups on their respective teams. The fact is Riley did not walk into to USC and take the same players Helton had and turn water into wine. Having a 5 star qb that already knows your system is a heck of a lot different than using the qb’s that he inherited from Helton. Riley’s done a good job of utilizing the portal.

There's no question he's a good coach. He will have to prove it at USC. He's off to a great start, but the season is still young.

As for his time at OU, he took over a program in mid-summer that was loaded with talent, defending Big 12 champions and on an 11-game winning streak. He had a good run, but by his final year the team had become soft and was getting pushed to the wire by teams like Tulane, Nebraska and Kansas. They didn't even qualify for the Big 12 championship game.

They were so loaded with talent that he had to hit the portal to find a QB the first 3 years he was there 🙄. He brought those QBs and developed both Mayfield and Murray into number 1 overall picks. That has nothing to do with Stoops.

I’m not sure how old you are but Pete Carrol had some damn good defenses

Wrong. Baker Mayfield transferred to Oklahoma in January 2014. Kyler Murray transferred to Oklahoma in January 2016. Bob Stoops was the head coach until June 7, 2017.

Here we go again with the predictable OU fans dissing Riley.

I don't see how posting factual information is "dissing" Riley. He's a good coach.

Did you watch any of OU's games last year other than the Texas game? If not, go back and watch condensed versions of the Tulane, Kansas and Nebraska game and see how they got pushed to the limit by three of the worst FBS teams in the country in 2021. Go back and look at how Baylor manhandled OU on both sides of the line of scrimmage. Go back and look at the flag football defense that his DC Alex Grinch employed.

My point is, Riley has been dissed over and over here by OU fans. They act as if he's some kind of discarded piece of trash.

I’m in my 40’s and those defenses were good but they weren’t world beater defenses. They won with explosive offenses and a strong running game.

They finished in the top 10 in total defense 3 of his 9 seasons. Like I said, they were good on defense but they weren’t world beaters. And the PAC 12 was awful in his time at USC.

The ones that won a championship was good for sure and a direct correlation, we can both agree right?

AND, which is a huge AND, that’s was Riley’s 5th season. Great offensive mind though

Lincoln Riley is an excellent coach, but a lot of people forget that he was handed the keys to a program on an 11 game winning streak, defending Big 12 champions, destroyed Auburn in the Sugar Bowl, and had an excellent incoming class. The transition from Stoops to Riley also took place in the middle of the summer so as to have the least amount of distractions as possible for Riley.

Venables transition was more chaotic. OU (by their standards) had a bad season last year, not even qualifying for the Big 12 championship game or going to a New Year's Six bowl (they went to the Alamo Bowl). A lot of players defected to USC and other programs through the transfer portal. This also happened at the end of the recruiting cycle, but Venables was able to maintain an excellent incoming class and actually improve their overall recruiting ranking.
