Five Longhorns named Associated Press All-Big 12
Kris Boyd, Charles Omenihu, Zach Shackelford and Caden Sterns all garnered first-team honors.
AUSTIN, Texas - The Associated Press named five from Texas Football on its All-Big 12 teams on Friday, including four on the first team. CB Kris Boyd, DE Charles Omenihu, C Zach Shackelford and S Caden Sterns garnered first-team honors, while LB Gary Johnson was a second-team member.
Boyd, a native of Gilmer, Texas, also earned first-team recognition from the Big 12 coaches at defensive back. He has totaled 63 tackles (46 solo) with 3.5 tackles for loss and a sack. He has been a lockdown at the corner position, with 16 pass breakups and an interception. He also has a QB hurry, forced fumble and a fumble recovery on the year.
Shackelford, a junior from Belton, Texas, was named second team All-Big 12 by the league’s coaches. He has been a key cog in the Longhorns’ offensive line, blocking for QB Sam Ehlinger on his way to 3,123 passing yards and 38 total touchdowns. On the outside, junior receivers Lil’Jordan Humphrey and Collin Johnson have combined for 144 catches, 2,054 yards and 16 touchdowns with time to get open because of strong offensive line play.
Omenihu, who was named the Big 12 Defensive Lineman of the Year and first team All-Big 12 by the coaches, has totaled 43 tackles with 16 tackles for loss and 9.5 sacks. His 16 TFL and 9.5 sacks are the most for a Longhorn since the 2013 season. His 9.5 sacks rank second in the Big 12 Conference. He enters the Sugar Bowl with at least one tackle for loss in nine straight games.
Sterns, who was named the Big 12 Defensive Freshman of the Year and first team All-Big 12 by the coaches, hails from Cibolo, Texas. He had 62 tackles (46 solo) with three TFL, one sack, four interceptions and four pass breakups. His four INT are tied for the most ever by a Longhorn true freshman. He also has a blocked field goal against USC, which was returned for a touchdown.
Johnson, who was also named second team All-Big 12 by the league’s coaches, is a senior from Douglas, Ala. He leads the Longhorns with 85 tackles and also has 15.5 TFL, 5.5 sacks and a team-best eight quarterback hurries. He has added two forced fumbles, a fumble recovery and one pass breakup.
Texas is 9-4 overall and ranked No. 15 in the CFP. The Longhorns face Georgia in the Allstate Sugar Bowl on Jan. 1. The Bulldogs are 11-2 overall and ranked No. 5 in the CFP. Both programs have four wins over ranked opponents this season, tied for second-most in the country. Kickoff from the Mercedes-Benz Superdome is set for 7:45 p.m. CT on ESPN on New Year’s Day.
