Just finished a fantastically interesting book. "The King of Diamonds" by Rena Pederson....former Dallas Morning News and Texas Monthly writer...based mostly in the Park Cities of Dallas in the 1950s and 60s a jewel thief is breaking into the richie rich homes and selectively taking jewelry...and never getting caught. If it were just a who dunnit book it would be a 7 of 10 BUT it really dives into the seedy side of the DFW metroplex - gambling, mafia, corruption, prostitution, booze, you name it...it's there! I love how this writer NAMES NAMES...."hop sing...they named names!" (little Steinfeld there for you who are paying attention) - calling out names we all would recognize...Murchison...Lay...Hunt...Amon Carter...Campisi...J Edgar Hoover...LBJ...Lambert...Kirksmith...Candy Barr...and more!
Plus it's so cool to read about an era when Dallas was so mysterious and still pretty wild with oil and diamonds and excess.
Maybe because the story is interesting and maybe bc I live in FW and have been to many of the places mentioned in the book....but definitely a 9 of 10 and best book I've read this year
@DustinMcComas you need to add to your list!
