If nothing else, this shows Herman thinks special teams are at least an important part of the team dynamic. it is about damned time.

He's paid attention to the shootouts that go along with this conference. We'll need a consistent kicker and one that can kick under pressure.

Amen brother!...I was getting damned tired of our touchdowns counting 6 points and everyone elses counting 7...worse...some of our touchdowns only netted 4 points!

The OSU game was the topper!....We were in a shootout for a while...they made a TD...got 7 points. We made a TD , extrapoint blocked and returned for a 2 points OSU score...they made a TD, got 7 points...we make a TD and get only 6!....on and on it went

Trent was 40/44 on XP M/A and 15/22 FG M/A he went 4/8 from 30-39, 1/3 from 40-49 and missed 50+.

Hope this is just the first part of a plan to have great special teams.

It will sure make the Saturdays next fall a lot more pleasant if we have great fg kicking.

We've got a great punter, now we just need to cover them and the kickoffs and we're headed in the right direction in one of the 3 parts of a football team.

Dear eight pound two ounce baby Jesus,

Please let the new Texas kicker have a middle name like Ken or Kevin so I can tell everyone our kicker is the magical JK Rowlands.

Our kick coverage was fine this year. Middle of the pack on kickoffs (70 something in the ranks) and number 3 in net punting (thanks to Dickson's leg). No return TDs all season. That is nothing to complain about.

I was told by my coworker that someone did some analysts on XP and FG's this year and that if all were made we would've been 10-2 or something like that. Does anyone know where that analysts is. I just think it's funny!

There are three phases to the game, offense, defense and special teams...the prior staff had all but thrown special teams out the window.

No one is making every FG, but that would be impossible to tell, as the opponents game plan changes with a made/missed FG. Unless it was a last second FG, you can't just add in the points of a missed FG/XP and say we would have won.

What was our return game ranked? Our coverage might have been fine, but the few times I remember even had a just decent return I could count on one hand, much less a good to great return.

Yeah I'm not sure how it was done and if they looked at clock and when it was kicked. Who knows I thought it was funny though when I was told. I will say this though there were some kicks that would have won a couple games I'm not sure we would've been 10-2 though.

True, but he did state "if" therefore making it a hypothetical statement. Most everything in football is wrapped up in "ifs." If we recruit this guy, if we hire that coach, if we run this play, if we play this defense, if we win this game, if they win that game, if we wouldn't have DROPPED THE G-D GIFT WRAPPED INTERCEPTION AGAINST TTECH! ......sorry, still depressed about that one.

Kstate, Kansas, WVU, and OU. Were the only close games. The rest we were pretty much dominated in so missed FG weren't the major factor.

OU we made both FG attempts and all XP, so that one is out.
KSU we missed one FG and made all XP, we lost by 3, so that one is iffy
WVU we missed one FG and mad all XP, we lost by 4, so that one is out
Kansas we missed one FG and made all XP, we lost in OT, so that one is iffy

I don't recall the circumstances of each missed FG in KSU and Kansas, but at best that's only two more wins.

Texas 76th in Opponent kickoff returns. 44 returns for an average of 21 yards. 0 returned for Touchdowns.
Texas 29th in Opponent punt returns. 19 returns for an average of 4.89 yards 0 returned for Touchdowns.

The problem on special teams was penalties and the blocked place kicks.

And missed field goals from 30-39 yards. What were we ranked when we did kick return, punt return and TD's on special teams. I don't remember doing very well in those but I can't remember every game because I was drunk by the halftime.

Ok I found the stats on our kick/punt returns.
Rk.............G....KRT....TYD...TD..AVG
111 Texas 12...42.......773.... 0....18.40
Rk.............G.....PRT....TYD..TD..AVG
89 Texas...12......28.......182...0.....6.50

This is horrible! We need better special team play on returns period.

83rd in FG percentage, 17/24. I coudn't find a yards breakdown although I guess if you had time you could go look at the box scores.

I think one problem in our return game was holding and block in the back penalties. We had so many special teams penalties this year. It killed some of our longer returns.

If you scroll all the way up you'll see my break down of the FG made vs missed by Trent.

since this is about special teams....I remember someone mentioning that the long snapper is one of the 3 most important players on the team. I had to think about that a while....Maybe not one of the 3 most important, but certainly he is right up there. I went back and looked at the stats for the Kansas game( no particular reason, it was just the last one played) and started counting....The long snapper made 12 snaps...I never realized how many times that guy had to be perfect in a game. Any mistake on his part on any of the 12 times and disaster happens.

Paying more attention to special teams isn't going to guarantee that you have a Justin Tucker at kicker. I don't really think of kickers as players that are developed via coaching. They either have it or they don't, and that's not always apparent based on high school career. But blocking, coverage, and return game are certainly areas that can be improved.

I did a small sample of our NC 2005 and also 2009 and our returns were in the Top 5 in TD's. It helps to have a few games where you're getting some help from the SPT. I didn't look at avg yards per game which would be even more helpful considering better field position.
