Here are a few notes gathered in speaking with sources early this week about the football team:
- One person asked today in the OB forums about the status of RB Kirk Johnson and if he was eligible for a medical redshirt if unable to go this season. In checking around a bit, apparently the initial reports we heard about Johnson may have been on the pessimistic end of the spectrum. "Not at all. He's working his way back," one person said when asked if Johnson was on pace to be shut down for the year. I wouldn't expect to see Johnson too soon, but he sounds on-track to possibly play this season if his progress from the original setback with his knee continues.
- Another OB member asked about the health of CB Davante Davis and if he was practicing after going M.I.A. for the second half of the Cal game. After checking with a few folks, multiple sources have confirmed Davis has been "out there" at practice meaning he's practiced this week.
- Speaking of the DBs, CB Holton Hill has been working mostly with the ones this week after seemingly getting a bit of the doghouse-treatment through the last two games. It only makes sense. People behind the scenes see the same thing many fans do: a separate team source told us over the weekend that "everyone (on the team) knows (Hill) is our best cover-corner."
- S Brandon Jones appears to be in line for a little more work moving forward on defense than he has seen to this point, but is reportedly working with the twos in practice.
- I'd mentioned LB Erick Fowler as a player likely to redshirt in this update based on Strong's comments about players who'll receive the designation at his Monday presser. But, after speaking with a few sources since, I don't think the door is completely shut to Fowler taking the field for Texas in 2016. I still see it as a longshot and every week that passes makes it even more unlikely. However, Fowler seeing the field in 2016 now seems much more possible than the prospects of any other true freshman who has yet to burn redshirt eligibility.
- It has been assumed that OL Alex Anderson would fill in at the right guard for Kent Perkins versus Oklahoma State as Perkins serves his one-game DWI suspension and he might. Anderson has been the player to step in for Perkins when Perkins has missed time this season. However, a source told us Tuesday that it has been backup center Jake McMillon taking the reps at right guard. Who knows who will start in Stillwater, but the smart money, at least to start the week, would probably be on McMillon - and not Anderson - from all we can gather at this time.
