Cliff-notes: The Longhorns picked up commitment No.3 for the 2021 class on Sunday when Katy (Texas) Tompkins quarterback Jalen Milroe committed to Tom Herman and his staff.

Rankings: Milroe is a 5.9 mid-four star prospect in the current Rivals.com rankings and is currently slotted as the No.98 overall prospect and No.2 dual-threat quarterback in the Rivals 2021 national rankings. Milroe ranks as the No.17 player in the state of Texas in the current Rivals Texas 2021 Top 100.

Key Offers: Alabama, Florida, Florida State, Nebraska, Texas A&M, Oregon and a host of others.

Evaluation: The best way I can describe Milroe is that when you usually see a guy with his run-game ability, you almost always assume that the throwing elements of his game are going to be way off because anything else is almost too good to be true. Well, Milroe might not be a finished product in the passing game, his ability to stick throws in the short- and intermediate range at his age gives a big confidence boost that this kid has legitimate star upside as a prospect at the next level. Listed at 6-3, 194 pounds, Milroe is quicker than he is fast, but that quickness features an elite-level burst from second to third gear, which allows him to create separation almost at will at the high school level when he gets a slice of daylight. As a passer, he's like most 16-year olds in that his consistent mechanics are still a work in progress, yet when he gets his feet set and his arm motion where he wants it, he's got the ability to stand in the pocket and deliver on-target strikes. He's another kid that merely needs reps, reps and more reps in the passing game, along with a proven quarterbacks coach that can smooth some of the rougher areas of his game to the point that his overall talent level takes full control.

Former Tom Herman player he reminds me of: J.T. Barrett

What Rivals said about him about the Rivals Three-Stripe Camp: "Milroe is a dual-threat quarterback, so he could not showcase his full talent in this camp setting, but he has a great frame, a big arm and a lot of raw tools to like. He is a 2021 prospect with offers from Nebraska, Houston, Tulsa and others. That list is sure to grow as he develops. His arm strength and ability to run will draw him a lot of attention in the coming months."

Why it matters: Milroe is a bit of a diamond in the rough in that he hasn't come close to playing the best football of his career, but he already projects as one of the best 2021 prospects in both the state of Texas and Greater Houston Area. As an athlete, Milroe looks like an absolute take, potentially on both sides of the ball. As a quarterback prospect, Milroe looks exactly like the kind of guy that Tom Herman has had the most amount of success with as a college coach. His ability to make plays with his feet is truly elite and once is passing game receives a little polish, the sky is potentially the limit by the time we get to 2023 or 2024.
