Cliff-notes: DeSoto (DeSoto) 6-4, 285-pound offensive tackle Xavier Newman became the sixth member of Texas’ 2017 recruiting class when he announced his commitment on Twitter.
Key Offers: Recently, Newman’s offer list has continued to grow, and he currently holds offers from the likes of Arizona State, Colorado, Mississippi State, Missouri, North Carolina, Texas A&M, Texas Tech, Kansas State, Minnesota and others.
Evaluation: On film, one of the first things that sticks out about the three-star prospect is that he played tackle, guard, and center at times during his junior season. The second thing that sticks out is that the newest Texas commitment tries to overpower the opposition with his upper-body strength, take defenders where he wants to take them, and then try to plant them into the turf. He proves to be successful in that on more than just one occasion.
Projected as a tackle (he appears like he could be destined to be a guard, though), Newman excels right now at reaching out with his length, engaging the defender, and driving him; he lunges too often right now to try to engage and deliver that big blow, but that’s correctable. What Texas appears to be getting is a good-looking frame that’s going to add weight and projects with some length; a player with some strength in his upper-body with more to come; and a versatile offensive lineman that moves pretty well that shows knowledge of things like double-team blocks and moving on to the second level and how to turn opponents to create holes. He’s a solid prospect.
Recently, Newman earned an invite to Nike’s The Opening camp, which speaks highly of his ability.
Why it matters: Newman has clearly been noticed by a number of programs, and that number is going to likely grow. Texas made the move to offer the 6-4 prospect a couple of weeks back, and was soon able to turn that into a commitment from one of the powerhouse high school programs in the state.
