Cliff-notes: Lake Travis (Lake Travis) tight end Cade Brewer became the 10th member of Texas’ 2017 recruiting class when he flipped his commitment from SMU to Texas.

Rankings: Brewer is rated as a three-star prospect by Rivals.com, and is No. 98 in the recently updated LSR 100.
Key Offers: In addition to SMU, Brewer also holds offers from Baylor, BYU, Kansas State, Oklahoma, Oregon State, Purdue, and Texas A&M.
Evaluation: Listed at 6-3, 218 pounds, Brewer is the total package as a tight end prospect. He’s a good route-runner; he’s quick and agile enough to line up in the slot and create separation as a pass-catcher; he catches the ball with his hands, and shows good awareness; he’s a versatile football player that received carries as a RB in the shotgun, and also blocked both at the line of scrimmage and down-the-field as a lead-blocker; and he’s athletic enough to hurdle defenders and make one miss in the open field. Once Brewer adds weight and strength, he’ll eventually be able to fill a role along the offensive line as a blocker, but he’d be best used in college as a pass-catcher.
Frankly, his senior tape, combined with elite production (64 catches for 898 yards and 16 total touchdowns), suggests the low three-star ranking needs a bump. Brewer was a go-to-guy on offense for one of the best teams in the nation, and was used as a receiver, tight end, and running back.
Why it matters: Under Tom Herman, the tight end will actually be used and targeted more often in Texas’ passing attack. The Longhorns need not just another body at that position, but a player that offers the kind of skill-set to thrive as a receiver. That’s what Brewer does.
