Cliff-notes: The Longhorns picked up their fifth commitment, first defensive back, for the 2017 class when Lake Dallas (Corinth) corner Kobe Boyce announced his commitment to Texas.

Key Offers: Boyce recently picked up an offer from Texas A&M on Friday, jumped on the Longhorns offer that came Saturday, and also holds offers from Arkansas, Baylor, Houston, and Mississippi State.

Evaluation: As a junior, Boyce showed the ability the play at the line of scrimmage as a press corner in a bump-and-run or bail coverage, and also played off the line of scrimmage. At 6-0 with some length, Boyce and his physical nature can cause some problems for receivers at the line of scrimmage, and he has the speed (4.49 40; SPARQ, Nike verified) to run with receivers down the field.

What sticks out most about Boyce is that he’s not afraid to make hits in the running game, and that he diagnoses plays well both run and pass. The newest Texas commitment also turns to find the ball well, although he can get a little too physical at times, and shows solid knowledge of technique pre-snap and after.

Currently, Boyce is rated as the No. 41 prospect on the 2017 LSR 100.

Why it matters: Boyce’s stock seems like it is really taking off, and more offers are sure to roll in. Not only does the Lake Dallas product seem to fit what Charlie Strong and company like (size, physicality, play-making both on and off the line of scrimmage), but the Longhorns swooped in to grab him before the list of suitors really increased.

Enjoy:
