Ketch's 10 Thoughts From The Weekend ("F*** Texas and all of its money.")

It's comical that there are 68 rowing scholarships but whatever. Even crazier that most of the girls they get are just athletes they turn into rowers.

Please provide more detail on what “new” scholarship means . Soccer doesn’t have 42 players as an example. So what does the new number mean? Adding to an existing scholarship. Eg half paid to full ride?
Old total available vs New total available

It's everyone's goal. It's really hard to pull off
Sorry, but I don't think that has been our goal most of the time. Rick recruited some great players, but not any great teams. I remember him saying that he told his players not to come back just to try to win a national championship because there were just too many variables (my word) involved.

I don't think we set out every year with winning a NC in mind. But we should.

Are we calling Hooisers a true story?

Hickory isn't even a real town.
It is based on an absolutely true story in which the team from the smallest classification in Indiana basketball beat the team from the largest school classification. I have a very old friend who was at the game.

Happened much like it is shown in the movie. Don't think Dennis Hopper was there .

You think there's more excitement and buzz with this hire than those two I mentioned? Really?
I don't necessarily feel there is more excitement or buzz, but I also don't feel it's as subdued as you make it sound.

Sean Miller is a very accomplished coach and I am happy to have him.

But isn't it all dependent on athletic department funding and thus fundraising? I get that it doesn't end up being literally the same thing.
No, not as it relates to NIL. The program will be responsible for slightly more than 20.

Most of the movie is made up except for the general story that a. small town team won the title.

My point is that all of the money, whether it ends up as athletic department/Foundation money on the one hand, or NIL money on the other hand, is coming from fundraising. So why is so much of that effort being focused on these scholarships?

No, it's not all coming from fundraising. That is not how Texas collects all of its revenue. Far from it.

Ketch, didn't think you were old enough to remember Moms Mabley. That was one funny lady.

No. 4 – The implications of Nick Brooks ...

I want to apologize for this next section because sometimes the negative energy takes over my brain and I just can't help it.

With all of the buzz surrounding true freshman Nic Brooks since he arrived in January, I find myself having the following reactions.

a. I have some doubts about all of the rhetoric, but it seems clear he is headed towards a path of being someone that the program will eventually be able to lean on, which is a hell of an important potential win in recruiting when you consider that players with his recruiting profile historically develop into drafted NFL players about 20%-ish of the time at best.

b. No one had Brooks as a super blue chip prospect in the industry. Only Rivals and ESPN had him as a national top 200 player. On3 had him as a 3-star.

c. What the hell does this say about every other young offensive lineman at his position that he's generated more buzz than all of them combined?

Andre Cojoe going into his third year? Jaydon Chatman going into his third year? Malik Agbo going into his fourth year? Hell, even Brandon Baker going into his second year?

Outside of possibly Baker, the praise of Brooks flashes praise on the fact that all of the non-true freshman offensive tackles in the program not named Trevor Goosby and Baker look like lost causes at this point when we're talking about playing at the levels needed for this program to win a national title. I don't want to say the P-word too loudly, but anyone that Brooks passes in the pecking order over the course of the next few weeks will have to see the writing on the wall.

Does Brooks truly look like a world-beater or do the rest of the guys look so far away from world-beating that he looks like a damn Ritz cracker to a starving man in the desert?

We'll find out soon enough.
Sometimes the negative implications can mean more than the positive development.

That was a well-thought-out analysis of what the offensive tackle situation really looks like for Texas.

Hopefully, Brooks keeps right on surprising, and at least one or two of those guys who have been around awhile start demonstrating some development in spring practice.

If not, that portal door is likely swinging both directions after spring ball.

Well none of it is from taxes right? I thought I remembered that. Maybe wrong. But if that's right, its essentially all fundraising and revenues generated by the programs themselves, and I'm sure that only the big 3 and maybe women's basketball and volleyball generate money or even break even.

The scholarship numbers are crazy, maybe we can find some guys who are 6-5 weigh 350 who can row but like play in a football game on Sat.
Hopefully Brooks is a real deal I guess we will know more after the pads go on, but has to be concerning that a long of our younger lineman haven't stepped up.
I hope the Miller hire works out, but I just think we could have done better. I guess we will know that answer in a few years.
On your list most of them I don't have a big opinion on but a few years ago Silverman did a song with Matt Damon poking fun at Jimmy Kimmel it was funny as hell.

Nice column Ketch. Yeah the men’s basketball hire feels really Meh. It feels like we will be stuck in the middle of the SEC from now on not much better than where we Ewers, but maybe a little bit better. Not pleased at all. I mean what’s with all the Texas is top NIL school, but we hire an older middle of the road coach. Bama has Oats going for his fourth sweet sixteen in five years, Florida is picked to go to the final four Ole Miss going to the sweet sixteen it even feels like A$M may have the better coach.
Feels like we are skimping on a coach because the money is tight.

I even think Scott Drew may have been a better choice with all his Texas high school and AAU connections than Miller. Why honestly can all the other SEC afford a top football coach and a top basketball coach and a top baseball coach? We have more funds available then all those schools supposedly right?
I hope am wrong, but this feels like we will be revisiting another hire again in another 4-5 years,if he makes it that long. This was purely a comfort hire to me.

I don’t think paying $5M for a new coach (who will most likely be in top 10 paid coaches in country) is “skimping “ on the coach because money is tight. I just think CDC believes Miller is the right guy. He’s hit on most of his hires.

I don’t get the rowing numbers either. The best use of women’s scholarships would be for gymnastics.
Texas would rule women’s gymnastics. Instead of forcing all of the elite Texas gymnasts to leave the state for college, give them a chance to do it for the flagship university in their home state. There is far too much talent in state for The University of Texas not to have a program.

No, I have no doubts on that. My comments are more to this for your column below. 👇

" This isn't a real needle-moving move. It's less exciting than the hires of Shaka Smart or Chris Beard."

It's ok for you and others to be less excited and others to be more excited by the hiring. We don't all see things exactly the same, and that is what makes for good discussions.

I hope he’s right, but his last ten years of resume says different. I think there were better and younger coaches available for hire like Ben McCollum or Will Wade or Todd Golden, for example.

This feels more like a comfort hire to me.I agree the money doesn’t suggest that, but his resume does say different.

I didn’t think Miller would be the hire. He’s a better coach than RT (not that that was the bar). I think Ketch said this — very similar to the Sark hire and I can see that. The hope now is Miller can elevate himself with the Texas brand and resources like Sark has. We’ll see.

You could have led with baseball. The success so far has surprised me and don't tell the aggy that coaching seems to matter.

It appears Texas under CDC was meant to be in the SEC.

Top 10 female comedians, I did not see that coming from a mile away.

Best guess on the 68 women’s rowing scholarships is it helps to balance out the football scholarships.

I believe Title IX requires an equal amount of mens and women’s scholarships. The 68 for rowing allows for Texas men’s sports to stay on full scholarships.

Instead of adding sports like women’s gymnastics that cost more money just add the scholarships to rowing. Likely lower costs.
