Ketch's 10 Thoughts From The Weekend ("F*** Texas and all of its money.")

10. Whitney Cummings- kind of a naughty girl but I like her style.
9. Sarah Silverman- solid body of work.
8. Nikki Glaser-Nikki gets in on the strength of the Brady roast alone. She also makes my groin feel weird.
7. Melissa McCarthy- kind of a female Chris Farley
6. Amy Poehler- always solid. Always sarcastic.
5. Kristen Wiig- fantastic comedic actress in feature length stuff.
4. Tiny Fey- great writer and sketch comedy
3. Gilda Radner- have to respect her for hanging with that original SNL crew.
2. Lucille Ball- titan of comedy. She was Oprah before there was Oprah success wise.
1. Joan Rivers- My First Lady of comedy. Always on. She would peobably still be crushing it had she not let the cat out of the bag on Big Mike.
Great list of funny women but many of these ladies aren’t comedians. As in stand up comedy.

Not buying the Wingo #1 stock huh Ketch.

Let’s see how he does this year. I think he’s #1 WR material.
It’s possible, but I think it’s a lot to ask of him to replace Golden, A.D. and Worthy caliber guys. Next year, absolutely. If we can bring in a stud #1, Wingo and Moore will likely shine in those roles.

Those aren’t just you’re everyday WR#1 though.

Sorry, but I don't think that has been our goal most of the time. Rick recruited some great players, but not any great teams. I remember him saying that he told his players not to come back to try to win a national championship because there were just too many variables (my word) involved.

I don't think we set out every year with winning a NC in mind. But we should.
WTF are you talking about? You think teams set out not to win?

Most of the movie is made up except for the general story that a. small town team won the title.
Sure. Actors had to say stuff.

Bull Durham, which I like a lot, is completely made up. Almost all movies are. That is not a knock on a movie, that someone created it.

We just disagree.

Always such a great read but especially when it’s hard to get news in one place. On the road to see the Omaha beach at Normandy and just really appreciate your take on Texas sports. Not sure about the comedian list. Have to think on it. Not a fan of Barr but the rest make sense. Kudos Ketch!

Zero Shi** about other schools. The 45 years I’ve been following UT Athletics we weren’t allowed to use our financial advantage. You think they’d mention us carrying conferences and sharing revenue with lesser members or how we politely waited for NIL to become official policy when no one else would.

No telling how many players, trophys and championships we missed on playing by the rules. How many more wins if we don’t pay Kansas St. to have equal or better talent? We were schmucks!

Why are we investing so much money in dam rowing ?

To me, I would concentrate in order on:

Football, Men’s Basketball, Baseball, Women’s Basketball, Softball, Volleyball, Track and Field, and probably let everything else go…..certainly wouldn’t add resources.
Football is specifically limited to 85 players for all schools.

Perhaps I should have said scholarships - as you said the following.

The topic of choice with several sources was Chris Del Conte's recent announcement that Texas Athletics was adding another 200 scholarship athletes to its roster at a cost of more than an additional $9+ million to the athletic department for the year.

But it is nonetheless a monetary advantage over virtually all other programs. Which would seem to give Miller a competitive advantage in recruiting against the competition.
NIL is not the same thing as scholarships.

Not through NIL fundraising...
Not that it’s simple, and it’s also still evolving. But many people still don’t have a grip on the economic/financials of college athletics. Even some of the basics. I guess the shift from “amateur” to “professional” still has many confused, despite the Olympics and pro sports as examples. Might be worth a piece on the “new economics” of college sports, and the end of artificial controls over amateur athletes’ rights.

No, it's not all coming from fundraising. That is not how Texas collects all of its revenue. Far from it.
Seriously, a lot of people need a primer on collegiate athletics economics! So much has happened so fast, confusion is everywhere. How confused are people? I had a friend ask me if UTAustin’s athletics revenues, like from the conference TV contracts, trickles down to other system schools like UTSA or UT Arlington.

Look I’ll admit I never watched men’s soccer but it just always felt like Texas should not only have men’s soccer but be dominant in it.

In fairness I have no idea what role Title IX plays.
A ton. Baseball wasn’t so heavily loaded with partial scholarships because UT Athletics didn’t have the money. It was Title IX equality.

I'm thinking the same thing. Why the hell does rowing need that many scholarships, and why is there such a disparity between men and women scholarships?
Hope it doesn’t mean more rowers in Town Lake. They already think they own the place.

Just an educated guess here, but I suspect Title IX also contributed to women’s rowing 68 scholarships. Hook ‘em! JG

Sometimes the negative implications can mean more than the positive development.

That was a well-thought-out analysis of what the offensive tackle situation really looks like for Texas.

Hopefully, Brooks keeps right on surprising, and at least one or two of those guys who have been around awhile start demonstrating some development in spring practice.

If not, that portal door is likely swinging both directions after spring ball.
Hey, here's hoping he's the truth and a future big dog NFL prospect. You'd probably trade those other dudes all sucking if you knew he was going to be that kind of player.

Well none of it is from taxes right? I thought I remembered that. Maybe wrong. But if that's right, its essentially all fundraising and revenues generated by the programs themselves, and I'm sure that only the big 3 and maybe women's basketball and volleyball generate money or even break even.
Broadcast revenue Gate revenue. Merchandising. There's a long list of money producing elements that don't involve findraising. Broadcast revenue being the biggest.

I don’t think paying $5M for a new coach (who will most likely be in top 10 paid coaches in country) is “skimping “ on the coach because money is tight. I just think CDC believes Miller is the right guy. He’s hit on most of his hires.
I think the thought is that he's the best available based on the parameters they are looking for.

No, I have no doubts on that. My comments are more to this for your column below. 👇

" This isn't a real needle-moving move. It's less exciting than the hires of Shaka Smart or Chris Beard."

It's ok for you and others to be less excited and others to be more excited by the hiring. We don't all see things exactly the same, and that is what makes for good discussions.
I wasn't talking about personally, although that applies (I suppose), I was talking about the wider reception.

You could have led with baseball. The success so far has surprised me and don't tell the aggy that coaching seems to matter.

It appears Texas under CDC was meant to be in the SEC.

Top 10 female comedians, I did not see that coming from a mile away.
I could have led with about 10 different things. I could have led with Kenneth Sims. I thought more people than none would have something to say about it.
