Ketch's 10 Thoughts From The Weekend (Texas tracks OSU down, still chasing UGA...)

Love the Michael McDonald list! I thought you had listed his songs recently though. Guess I'm losing my mind. I've always been a huge fan of his. My performed with him in the 70's. Said he was really cool!

@Ketchum

Why do you think Texas isn't doing more than kicking the tires with the transfer portal right now? Is it a lack of people that give us something better or that Texas can't afford the NIL asks? If the latter...how does Texas fix that huge problem?

You completely confirmed my indifference I have had for the Cowboys over the past 20 plus years. I thought I was one of the few but I may be one of the many. I haven't invested time to watch a Cowboys game nor emotional tie in over that 20 years. I actually enjoy their yearly futility.

Rick Beato is highly offended by the term “yacht rock”. Ha.

As far as OB, the blue whale in the room is basketball coverage. The guy writing game recaps is fine, but recruiting and team news are in a black hole. Compare it with ten years ago and it’s _stark_.

@Ketchum

You should check out this interview by Rick Beato with Michael McDonald. It’s really interesting and seems like a good dude. Also, all of Beato’s interviews are usually solid and interesting.

@Ketchum can you fill us in how you view those elite RBs in state ? They are all bunched up together in the rankings , is there any measurable difference ? Or strengths one has over the other ?
I think they are roughly all the same in terms of level of prospect.

I think for a couple of weeks the need to retain the roster, first and foremost, kept them from being able to go full throttle because of the need to not have anything happen that would complicate retention. They offered the most money to Pregnon and he chose Oregon instead.

I can't get to a point where I enjoy the losing.

I just don't prioritize that content because so few people read it.

Should I program content for 5% of the site? I've resisted all content that doesn't provide a payoff. When we've had reports from Rodney Terry's press conference, players interviews, etc... it's barely consumed.

In reality, your comments aren't based in fact. 12 months ago, we had a full-time basketball writer providing content on the basketball team 3-5 times per week. Nothing is more frustrating than spending tends of thousands of dollars on a position that provides no real pay-off. Hell, to hear you talk about it, you didn't even notice.

That's the real blue whale.

Great column Ketch. One of your best that I recall.
I'm where you are on the Cowboys. My Sundays used to be planned around their game times from our family booking it home from church to make it in time for kickoff in the 60s to hangover recovery on the couch mid 70s ( UT days) to now if there's a Texan's game on at the same time I'll watch that and just occasionally check the Cowboys score. It's sad but probably won't change until Jerry is gone.
On Mack CDC needs to tell him you can shake hands and kiss babys and help raise as much money as you can but stay the hell away from Belmont.
I listened to the Phil Collins interview and was a little surprised to see Mick Fleetwood wasn't in his list of top drummers.
Looking forward to the survey, On tweaks to the site I suggest a separate forum similar to the Corral for blasting and put Steve Hookem in charge of content.

NOTED! ;)

Choosing between Kieran Culkin and Jeremy Strong for best performance is a clue as to how damn good Succession was, because they're only about a quarter of what made that show great.

It's starting to feel like this team is going to do enough to get to the NCAA Tournament. How this season will ultimately be remembered will be determined once it gets there. If Tre Johnson can get on a heater, Texas could be a Sweet 16 team with the right draw and a little luck.

Did you really just suggest that Texas has a chance at making a sweet 16 run in the tournament? I'd put higher odds on not even making the tournament than making the round of 32 at this point. Sweet 16 feels like an impossibility, unless they end up in a bracket scenario where they get to play a 14 or 15 seed in the 2nd round.

Hey, that's cool. It's your site, and if the financial side of it drives a lot of your decision making, that is your prerogative and seems appropriate from the outside looking in.

Just stating my experience outside of the survey you're doing...I figured a little context might help. I've been here two decades and have seen the highs of basketball coverage (Hamilton and McComas) and the lows (Coach Laptop, where it stands now) and figured you'd like to know.

You haven't raised prices since I started here, which is refreshing and appreciated, so continue to make financially-driven decisions for your site.

I didn't even think of the connection. I can't believe I didn''t, but you are so right. I mentioned to someone last week on here that it's one of the best shows of all time and they responded with saying they wouldn't watch it because I hyped it up so much they would come away disappointed.

I was like, "No, you won't."

You're not alone in your feelings, but we had Keenan (currently writing for SI as an NBA writer) for two years and he was providing serious basketball analysis, complete with gifs of play breakdowns, and people just don't clamor for it.

Even in this survey, it seems like 70+% would prefer our next hire be football related.

Tough decisions have to be made when trying to program for 1 in 5 subscribers.

No. 6 – Is Rodney Terry in the process of saving his job?

I'll confess ... I thought the Longhorns were toast at halftime on Saturday against Texas A&M.

I just didn't believe.

Yet, after a 22-point comeback that finished with the Longhorns beating a legit top four seed in the NCAA Tournament and moving to 3-4 in conference play through seven games ... I might be starting to believe ... a little. Two Q1 wins in a week will do that to a person.

This weekend's two road games loom large on the momentum front, as visiting Chris Beard and Ole Miss will hardly be a walk in the park and neither will Saturday's visit to Baton Rouge against arguably the worst team in the conference. Honestly, a 1-1 week will do just fine, especially with Arkansas at home in the days that follow. A 2-1 record in the next three games will get Texas to 5-5 in conference play with 8 games to go.

We're still a long way from that point, but at least this season has some dreams inside of it and not just a non-stop pile of car crashes. Considering where things stood just seven days ago, that feels like a win.

I am pretty Rodney neutral...always have been. I hate all the shit he takes on here, but if a better guy is out there, AND available, I'm ok with grabbing him and not looking back.

But if Texas made the sweet sixteen this year (which I am not predicting) he would be 6-3 in the tournament as the interim or permanent Head Coach. Just saying.

No doubt.

I thought there would be more Michael McDonald hot takes. You guys loved the Steely Dan discussion .
