manning vs ewers

Believe me I hope we get him and I hope he becomes the greatest player in UT football history. But from what I see in his film there’s nothing I saw that overwhelmed me but I could be all wrong. I’m not coach nor a scout so what would I know about QB talent. I just remember seeing VY on film showing his passing and running skills and being blown away. I’m certain that Manning’s got all the mental and leadership attributes of an NFL vet or he wouldn’t be as highly rated as he is right now.
You watched high school film of VY throwing the football and were blown away? Arch Manning has better mechanics and understanding of route concepts than VY ever did.

You watched different VY highlights than I did then. All the highlights I saw of VY were him breaking long runs with an occasional pass here and there. There wasn't anything I saw passing wise that ever blew me away with VY.

The one thing I see that stands out to me is his ability to get to his 2nd or 3rd read at times. He is pretty athletic as well and extends plays with his legs quite a bit. You also have to remember he still has another year of high school ball left. He's still developing his game.

I agree with bringing in Manning just for the recruits he would potentially attract, even if he doesn’t turn out to be very good.

If I had to choose between Arch or VY coming out of HS it’s a no brainer. VY by a mile. Arch is the best in his class no doubt but he’s purely a pocket passer with enough mobility to extend plays at times. VY was a threat on every play even on 3rd and 30. He’s not a drop back passer but could easily make plays moving out of the pocket and throwing on the run. He was a man amongst boys. Arch isn’t that type of player. Doesn’t mean he’s not great he’s just different when compared to VY. Arch is a prototype drop back QB like Peyton and Eli. But to say that Arch’s film is more impressive than VY? Cmon man!

Absolute no-brainer with VY compared with Manning. Anyone who thinks otherwise should have their football IQ checked.

Yeah, I guess. Sark should be trying to find that next Vince Young. 😉

The Manning kid is legit. He is 6'4" and athletic. Take a look at some of the basket ball clips out there. He moves really well. He is more Archie than Peyton or Eli. His mechanics are spot on. Nice fluid compact motion and a fairly quick delivery for a 6'4" guy. I know it's high school and I don't know what the competition is like but he does get the ball out quick and throws an accurate catchable ball. He has everything thing he needs to be a top flite QB at the college level.

Frankly Diablo.....I suspect everyone that is honest would have taken perriloux in a second. Hell, even after being a red shirt Freshman ( I mean he had been working with the team and coaches for a year) Mack Brown STILL did not know what he had in Colt. He came to fall camp and told the team they had to find a QB. It was the team that told him the QB question was already answered. The team was all over Colt.

my point wasn't which one you actually rated higher. my point was you don't know how these things will play out, especially using highlight videos, for crying out loud. who is going to adjust to more complicated schemes, more complicated defenses, faster defenders, the more physical game, being away from home, tighter windows to throw into, managing the huddle, being the savior one week and the most hated dude in the state the next, and on and on and on. we can guess, but nobody really knows. one thing i know is the manning kid has a support system of people that know what it's like and can prepare him and get him through things if need be.

but highlight videos... EVERYBODY looks good in highlight videos, or they wouldn't be highlights

I don't know how you could compare the 2 when one hasn't played a snap off football at the collegiate level yet. Sure Arch may never live up to what VY was but it's just silly to compare the 2 considering Arch hasn't even played his senior year of HS football yet. VY was nowhere near polished when he got to Texas.

VY's passing deficiency was easily over shadowed early in his career because he was such a world class athlete. Either way VY is arguably the greatest college QB of all time. It won't say much if he doesn't end up being as good as VY. That's just how good VY was.

That's not what I said. I said that Arch is a better passer, right now, than VY ever was. His mechanics, understanding of route concepts, and accuracy are vastly superior to anything VY has on film. GD designed an offense that gave Vince 1 read and then go.

Does Vince have unbelievable high school highlights, ofc. However, they aren't highlights of him passing the football.

If we’re only looking at passing then I agree Manning has better mechanics but even Hudson Card has better passing highlights than VY. I still maintain that VY hs film was far away more impressive. Manning on film is great but not generational great.

That's one Mack lucked into. But he did go colt over Jevan Snead, so he probably would've settled on colt eventually. Just would've been perriloux he best out instead of snead

Back in the 80's, 90's and early 2000's I was a college scout for Max Emfinger in the Houston area. Guys who I filmed and did write ups on and who stood out back then off of the top of my head were James Brown, Leeland McElroy, Rodney Thomas, Patrick Bates, Casey Hampton, Tommy Jeter, Brian White, Keith Frierson, Terry Venetouleous, Jeff Huff, Vince Young, Doug Womack, Brandon Backe, Drew Tate, Ell Roberson, Jermaine Alford, Clint Stoerner, Corey Pullig, Chris Colon, Kevin Colon, Corey Redding, Odell James. I know that I'm leaving out a lot of guys.

This was back in Clob's era. he can probably fill in the blanks of guys that I've left out. I'd have to say it's a toss up as to who was the most impressive between McElroy and VY. Both were freaks. That said, no disrespect to the others mentioned. Fun times back in the day.

Damn man, that is cool. I don't read every single post on here but, that is the first I here of you scouting. I remember most of those guys. I remember Tommy Jeter and Shane Dronnett were huge gets. I remember how cool it was to get my hands on the Dallas Morning News here and there when it had all of the recruiting stuff and the color pics after Texas/ou game. I have been in west Texas all of my life, thus I never had access to all of that.

I'm not sure how this became Manning vs Young, but I would never make that comparison.

VY as a collegiate athlete is so incredibly unique, that he is very hard to compare to anyone. How many 6'5" 240lb QB's do you see that can extend plays, escape the pocket, and elude defenders at that level? The answer is 1.
That being said, zone read(veer) concepts with the player I just described and a combination of Romonce Taylor/Jamal Charles is an absolute nightmare. Include an oline that is as good a group as any Texas has ever had, you have a NC football offense. However, the thing that truly mad VY special cannot be coached or designed.
There was not play in the playbook that said, drop back and when no one is open, dodge 3 guys in the pocket, roll to the right and run by everyone for a 75 yard touchdown.

Offense's (complicated offenses) can be designed for QB's with great mechanics, great accuracy, and extremely high football IQ. How many times in the last 12 years, have we complained about our QB's being inaccurate with the football or late with a throw on a route 15+ yards down field? From the tape I have seen of Arch, he has no problem with any of that.

accuracy-vs-arm strength....didnt Ellinger have a strong arm? He just could not hit the side of a barn from the inside.

I don't think Ellinger gets the credit he deserves. He did a lot for us in his 4 years. He made a lot of plays behind a somewhat shaky offensive line and I think he covered up some of Herman's coaching errors. He had consistency issues. He missed throws do some type of mechanics flaw in his delivery. He needs to go knock on Jordan Palmers door and let him work his magic. He has the tools to be an NFL starter.

Ehlinger’s throws outside the hashes are what he struggled with. He was just so inconsistent all the way around throwing the ball. Guy had the biggest heart of any player I can ever remember at Texas. He was a warrior.

Along the lines of Colt. Imo.

uh Woody....just when I was thinking you were a guy that knew what was going on....I think Colt averaged over 70% completions. Hardly inconsistent I would think....
You guys need another Colt, you know it. Another Mack? 😁
