I am just feeling bad about all the colors of young people tearing up the History I grew up with and studied from the 1st grade, this young Generations tearing up the world History over color, Its hard enough just to make a living to survive and pay ya bills, all them Statues and Flags on both sides History, I am white and I don't appreciate them degrading the 84th Mass statue, they was a buncha Black men who fought against what they was fighting against now , color and slavery.. and All Lives.etc, Why? Because its History about people who gave their life for freedom, they knew they was gonna die the minute they hit that Fort, but still they went..

Sad this world!

Serious question.

If you were German, would you want a statue of Hitler up? How about a monument commemorating Nazi's?

I'm not a fan of ignoring history, or even tearing down statues/renaming schools/etc. Considering most of it is bad in present thought, in context it was just the way it was. With that said, there were people all throughout history that opposed slavery, or being conquered. Liberty wasn't invented in the mid 1700s.

And I'll say this...most Americans' view of US History is shallow and incomplete.

I don't buy that...what they gonna do next move Arlington Natl Crematory? Once it starts it never stops..Has Liberty ever been invented even today? Everyone still fighting for nothing, or the same shit for 80 yrs or more..

You're right...you give someone an inch they will try to take a mile, but it certainly seems odd to me that we have these shrines for despicable things and people.

I don't care either way.

General Lee was no Hitler or a Nazi. Gen Lee was probably the best General our Nation has ever had. The statues of war heroes from the South were made by Southerners who were proud of what he accomplished against all odds. Many veterans were in awe of him, on both the North and South. Even Gen Grant was in awe of Gen Lee. Equating General Lee to a Nazi just shows a total lack of knowledge and is a lazy way to denigrate him. Read up on how he reconciled our country after the war.

George Washington was the best General this country ever had and second place is not even close. To think otherwise is to not know as much history as one needs to as an American.

I think he's referring to his military tactics on the field of battle. Lee did some unconventional things that proved to be successful. Asymmetric war etc.

I'm well aware of Lee and the history. I was merely trying to help my friend see a different POV.

I love the assumption though. You don't have any idea my knowledge on anything. Do we want to generalize and assume, or do we want to have conversations and seek understanding? It is hard to keep up anymore.

Am I right here...as long as someone agrees with my POV then I am willing to listen to another persons POV, but if they say something I don't like I will immediately insinuate that they're ignorant and tell them to "read up" and/or "educate yourself."

Patton was a great tactician. As I recall he didn't put up with much, nor did he give a sh!t about what others thought

Patton believed that speed kills. He was right. Keep your men moving quickly, keep the supply lines open and defended, keep your enemy scrambling to keep up and you'll be able to hit them when they're on their heels.

I'm a huge fan of GW, but best general in what sense? Because we've had many generals with better tactical sense, probably none with better leadership however.

It is hard to measure GW's tactical ability considering what he had to work with. He made some brilliant military moves that had huge risks, but paid politically. His attack of the Hession army at Trenton was genius....and it convinced the French that we indeed had a chance against England.

As far as leadership, Washington convinced a starving , no pay army to stay together and fight the best army in the world. He accomplished that with no support from the Continental Congress at all. In fact, that Congress put every roadblock possible in his path and Washington Still prevailed.

All the other Generals mentioned had so many more advantages over Washington that to look back it is embarrassing as well as astonishing.

Since I'm related to Robert E Lee that sorta makes me a monument to him. Just saying.

Admiral Chester Nimitz was the guy that won the War in the Pacific. He lead us to victory at the Battle of Midway and turned things around for us in the pacific.

I'm surprised no one mentioned Andrew Jackson. He repelled the British in the war of 1812 which was more impressive than winning the war of Independence.

google the list of top US generals....they are all there.....and every list is headed by Washington.

And a lot of lists have Andrew Jackson as a top 10 POTUS of all time too...

Again, I'm a huge fan of Washington, but he relied heavily on foreign advice in the organization of his army and battle tactics. But as far as a leader of men, he is tops no doubt.

Battle of Trenton was strategic in its nature, but he didn't exactly have to "plan" for defense. They attacked surprisingly. Still a terrific win and decision.

Weevil....I think you are one of the smartest guys posting here, but you have to understand what the strategy available to Washington was. What he did was develop a blue print that armies have followed since that time. The Viet Cong come to mind.....only the Vietcong had much more support than Washington had. It was impossible.....and yet he prevailed.

Well, thanks for the kind words.

I understand the context. I've read multiple books on Washington -- he is one of my favorite historical figures. I am speaking from a pure tactical sense in battle, there are better generals (not many). From a leadership standpoint, from a strategic standpoint there are probably none better.

As far as Guerrilla tactics, Washington drew on those and added them to his repertoire during the French and Indian War. In fact, many British commanders did. While Washington definitely had the deck stacked against him vs. the British, he knew British tactics, and he saw first hand how Guerrilla tactics could cause problems for the British. I wonder if Washington read Sun Tzu at some point in his life. I would imagine yes.

You and I are honestly splitting hairs here. Washington's leadership and foresight are unrivaled. He is truly one of the great Generals in history and probably our best OVERALL general.

Washington's greatest achievement was turning down kingship. We wanted to make him a king. IMO, we haven't had that kind of leadership in a LONG time.

the terms farewell and congress are about as oxymoron as you can get. Once they get elected, they stay forever...….for the good of the country of course.

you didn't say Congress, but....well, you get the idea.

Maybe you should have paid more attention in English class than history.

Washington was responsible for bringing Inspector General Friedrich von Steuben to Valley Forge. Von Steuben developed the Blue Book and creation of non-commissioned officers.

Not sure you know the story of Benedict Arnold? Arnold died in 1801 at the age of 60 of complications from a leg issue. He never paid for being a traitor. In fact he was handsomely rewarded for it. Not only did he get a boat load of money but 15,000 acres in Canada.
Your right, I am wrong!

In January 1801, Benedict Arnold's health began to decline.[103] He had suffered from gout since 1775,[126] and the condition attacked his unwounded leg to the point where he was unable to go to sea. The other leg ached constantly, and he walked only with a cane. His physicians diagnosed him as having dropsy, and a visit to the countryside only temporarily improved his condition. He died after four days of delirium on 14 June 1801, at the age of 60.[103] Legend has it that, when he was on his deathbed, he said, "Let me die in this old uniform in which I fought my battles. May God forgive me for ever having put on another,"[127] but this story may be apocryphal.[4] Arnold was buried at St. Mary's Church, Battersea in
