Did some checking around on a few things today. Some notes …
--- In talking to people with connections to Georgia, there is a confidence inside the Georgia program that the Dawgs have surged into the lead for running back Trey Sanders. Georgia “insiders” with a good track record are saying the same. Alabama isn’t out of it though. In fact, Nick Saban is doing an in-home tonight.
This one was trending Bama’s way for a long time but there’s a feeling that Sanders’ official visit to Georgia may have swayed him. Bama thought he was pretty much locked in based on some things that Sanders was saying behind the scenes, but I get the impression that they’re now worried. Nick Saban did an in-home with Katy running back Deondrick Glass last night and Alabama continues to go after D.J. Williams, which is a pretty good indicator that they’re not fully confident on landing Sanders.
As for Texas, the Longhorns are still hanging around and will make one last pitch this week, but at last check, one person I spoke with thought Sanders picking Texas would be a bit of a surprise.
Bottom line … Sanders hasn’t told ANYONE of his intentions, including the coaching staffs from the schools he’s considering. In fact, I’m not sure Sanders fully knows his eventual landing spot. Anyone who tells they know for certain where Sanders is going to wind up is making stuff up, but there is confidence on the Georgia side of things.
--- Speaking of Deondrick Glass, Stan Drayton did stop by to visit with him last week. As I mentioned last week, the Longhorns are still in the mix there. Glass does still have two official visits remaining and isn't planning on signing until February, although he's planning on announcing his commitment on January 14.
Glass did tell me today that he and Drayton discussed him taking a January official visit, but they haven't locked in a date yet.
--- Texas was in-home with Bru McCoy this week, with Tom Herman and Drew Mehringer making a stop by McCoy’s house. Mehringer was out there last week as well.
I exchanged a couple texts with McCoy’s father, who said both visits went really well.
“It was good to spend time with coach Herman and coach Mehringer,” Mr. McCoy said. “I think it’s good for them to see where Bru is from and meet his family too. Bru’s grandparents attended too.”
McCoy has his USC official visit this weekend, which obviously could be big in this one. As I’ve said previously, Texas has done a great job on this one, particularly Mehringer this fall and Brian Carrington getting the ball rolling, but there is still a lot of confidence on the USC side.
“We have a great relationship with Drew Mehringer and he has done a really good job of recruiting Bru,” Mr. McCoy said.”
--- I spoke with LB Caleb Johnson last night. In case you missed it, Johnson is visiting Colorado this weekend (for a second time … still not sure how that works). Texas was in-home this week with Herman and Todd Orlando stopping by.
I wouldn’t lose too much sleep over the CU visit. This one still looks good for the Longhorns.
--- Texas wide receiver commitment Marcus Washington shot down the report yesterday that he’s decommitting from Texas and going to flip to Missouri. Texas has been in touch and Washington is saying all the right things … but he’s definitely been in contact with Missouri and I was told again today that there’s confidence from people in Missouri that he’s going to choose to stay in state.
Tough one to call right now because Washington is sending mixed signals, but as I said yesterday, this is one worth watching all the way up until he signs.
--- 2021 DE Landyn Watson will take an unofficial visit to Texas on December 15. The Hutto product already has a handful of early offers and it wouldn’t be a surprise if Texas extends one as well.
--- Crazy time of the year. Don't be surprised to see a new name or two pop up. File away the name of Arizona grad transfer Nathan Eldridge and Charlotte (NC) OL Triston Miller.
