Mike Gundy tells CBS Sports ending Longhorn Network is key to Big 12's future

It was actually to keep us from following through on the Pac-16 plan.

Anyway, ESPN doesn't have money to burn like they did five years ago. A Big 12 network without Texas is a total non-starter. There are just three major brands in this conference: Texas football, OU football, and KU basketball. A network for an entire conference backed by only three major brands across all sports would be weak; one with only the latter two just isn't happening, and especially not in the time of cord-cutting.

Unless of course that network is ESPN. The LHN was their way of not losing the Texas market to the B1G. The whole reason ESPN paid what they did for the LHN was to counter the idea of Texas joining the B1G conference and them losing the entire Texas tier 3 market to the Big 10 Network.

It would still be a hard sell to ESPN without Texas. ESPN already has that market via the LHN. It's questionable if they would want to start a B12N separate from the LHN.

I would generally agree that those three are the perception but WVU gets probably the second most of any Big-12 member for it's Tier 3 content - an IMG 80 million dollar deal for 12 years equals WVU receiving 6.67 million per year.

I don't think the problem is branding as much as it is broadcast access. West Virginia has only 1.8 million people

You just described why there is no ACCN and unlikely to every be one. ESPN through the SEC already has the southern portion of the ACC footprint and while the Big Ten works with Fox, that network covers the northern ACC footprint.

Gundy and Boren are right on the money. We are lucky to have those guys leading the charge in fixing the issues that are plaguing this conference.

Didn't those schools voted yes to keeping their tier 3? Yes. So now they right on the money? Silly for you to say that. I bet you wouldn't say squat if Okie or Okie lite received a boat load of money from ESPN to start their own network. Would you say "Nooo, we don't want that money, we just want to share it with our conference mates". He'll to the No. Folks just mad because they are not making the money as UT. To sum this up. Don't be upset or hostile towards UT for being asked by ESPN to start its own network. Be upset towards your school for voting yes to begin with.

What was voted on before is irrelevant. How they feel in the present day is all that matters. I'm sure they look back and realize their decisions were wrong back then. I commend them for stepping up and deciding a change of course is for the better. To make an assumption it has anything to do with any hostility towards UT is shallow reasoning at best.

Nothing is irrelevant when they actually voted yes. You should realize that.

I understand Boren/Gundy's right to complain. However, I don't believe how they voted is irrelevant. Based on those votes and agreements, there are now millions of invested dollars and binding contracts involved.

If the oil and gas industry was not taking such a big hit right now we would not be hearing from these guy's. They are scrambling around to find revenue from where ever. Cowboys and ags have lived off the fruits of the gas industry and are feeling the pain. The opposite of responsibility is blame.

With all this talk of the Big XII's future, I look at our conference's non con schedule this year and I see plenty of reason to think things could get worse a year from now. Our conference has been the last successful of the P5 conferences the last two bowl seasons. We were 5/9 and the reason is simple, our defenses were terrible. Even in the three bowl games we won our defenses gave up a total of 121 points. We're living up to our reputation as an all offense, no defense conference. This year the Big XII will have its toughest non con schedule ever and I see more losses than wins.

Pitt/OSU as overrated as the pokes were last year they should win this one
TCU/AR I hate that sob Bielema I hope TCU wins but I see this one as a tossup
TTASU as bad as the Raider d is ASU's isn't any better tossup
UT/CA they lost Goff and they were lucky to win last year tossup
OK/cougar high this one's on opening weekend, it's a great match up and I have no idea who's going to win

the games we'll probably lose
KSU/ST it would be a shocker if the Wildcats win
OK/tOSU among the elites nobody is riding higher than Bama and the buckeyes. They'll probably replace Ezekial Elliott without missing a beat
TX/ND as much as I want us to win, as much as I despise the golden domers they'll probably be the best team we play this year.
ISU/IA Iowa had no business, no business at all being in an NYS bowl last year. The pc is dominated by the Big X and they were going to do whatever it took to make sure the Big X got the teams in the NYS bowls.
Anybody KS plays.

Of the five games we can win I doubt if we'll win more than three. I really hope I'm wrong, I don't want the Big XII to dissolve but the upcoming season does not look good for us as a whole.

I can agree with this. How they voted is relevant in the terms of what it did to put them in their current sitations. But in regards to how they presently feel about being in this conference and the future, how they voted years ago is indeed, irrelevant.

This is off topic, but ..... the most incredible stat I've seen in 2016 so far --- Billy Ray has 6,353 posts and TWO likes?

Ha! BillyRay is actually one of the very most thoughtful and reasonable posters from the Sooner board. (I realize that's an exceedingly low bar to clear, but he's actually reasonable by any standard. Anyone that that idiot blowhard SoonerToolsan hates can't be all bad. :)) The Rivals software switch screwed up post counts for visitors. The Nebraska board shows me as having 15,000+ posts, even though I only have ~40 over there, while the OU board only shows the five I've made there, for instance. Almost all of those posts for BillyRay are from the OU board, as he posts here very infrequently, and most of his posts here were made prior to the introduction of the "like" function.

He's still goddamned Sooner vermin, but he's about as good as Sooner vermin gets. :D

^^ I 100% approve of this post. I'm an OU fan on a UT site...so I don't expect to be treated as anything less than the vermin you view me as. haha :D:D

And if I can be frank here....even though I'm an OU fan, I really should be getting more likes on here regardless due to my ridiculously impressive personality. I mean seriously...how can you guys NOT love to read my posts when I come over here once in a blue moon...lol :p:D
