- We'll hopefully have more notes later from intern Robert who is a student in attendance currently.
- In an open practice that hosted a pretty dinky crowd of one-half students and one-half random fans of the program, the Texas media relations department still banished the credentialed media from attending any of the scrimmage periods of practice. After warmups, the DJ came over the stadium speakers and yelled "Are you ready for some football?!?!," which drew lots of yelling and clapping from all, but was apparently the cue for media relations to promptly escort all credentialed media out of the stadium.
- Members of the media would have been better off showing up as random observers like the others who got to stay in the stadium and watch practice. I've quit trying to rationalize the Texas media department's rationale for doing things like this to make the jobs of reporters and analysts harder and purposefully create contentious attitudes among them.
HERE YOU CAN READ OB INTERN ROBERT LARKIN'S REPORT ON THE PRACTICE WITH NEW INFORMATION.
- As for the student turnout, it was poor. As mentioned, it seemed like there were as many random, middle-aged people there as there were students. If any cool events or contests occurred with the students on hand, the media will not be able to report on them.
- RB Kirk Johnson, S Jason Hall, RB Toneil Carter and P Michael Dickson were all guys working on the side with trainers. Toneil Carter is in a walking boot.
- TE Andrew Beck is back on the field practicing but is still limited and did not take part in team periods the media was allowed to witness.
- Keep an eye out for a Texas Football tweet or snapchat coming soon that will show Deshon Elliott bodying some dude in the circle drill.
- Brandon Hodges has not been in attendance for two straight practices. Media relations has had no information on Hodges any time I have asked. He's not on the side working with trainers and he's certainly not practicing - at least since Thursday. I'll keep digging around about it and have some calls out since no one at Texas will help with any information.
- This meant Tristan Nickelson at the RT with the same starting group as always OL-wise. The second group Saturday was (L to R) JP Urquidez, Elijah Rodriguez, Terrell Cuney, Pat Hudson, Denzel Okafor. Disappointingly, Jean Delance, Buck Major, Tope Imade and Alex Anderson are all working third team. Anderson has actually been bumping out to RT instead of guard and they've been giving Garrett Thomas a look at his RG spot when doing so. Thomas and Major seem like the most "buried" scholarship OL on campus at this early time in the spring.
- Kyle Porter was the first RB out with the first team. Chris Warren was with the twos. I've been hearing behind the scenes that through the first two days of pads that the running backs have been one of the biggest disappointments on the entire team. Tristian Houston has actually been the RB who's looked best through the first two padded practices per a source. I see that as praise for Houston, but it also sort of has to be an indictment on the performance of the rest of the group.
- Starting wideouts were Collin Johnson, Devin Duvernay and Jerrod Heard. Garrett Gray was working with the first team at TE and lining up as a 4th WR more often than any fan would like seeing. When the team goes to a four-wide look, it would be optimal to have a guy like Foreman, Mapps or Curtis in there.
- A small depth chart ruffle on the defense: LB Erick Fowler looks to be trying to take the job of Edwin Freeman as the second-team mike linebacker next to Anthony Wheeler. The LB unit of Fowler, Wheeler and McCulloch was the grouping with the second unit for all drills during the "open" portion of practice (to the credentialed media, the practice was 'open' to all others for the entire portion, as mentioned numerous times).
- At Thursday practice, CB Davante Davis looked to be cracking into the first group by taking snaps away from Kris Boyd. On Saturday, Davis was in with the first group for Holton Hill opposite Boyd. As originally predicted, the musical chairs at the two outside corner positions between Hill, Boyd and Davis will continue to be one of the sources of great intrigue through the spring and possibly fall camps.
