The idea is to eliminate the IRS and do away with a Federal income tax. That would be replaced by a Federal Consumption Tax. You simply pay more when you spend/consume more. It would eliminate the death, gift, and payroll taxes.
The problem is that even though this is super common sense and would be embraced by 80+% of the country, we (as Americans) feel like if the "other" side is for this, I must automatically be opposed to it, without ever really evaluating it.
I know that the argument would be that be that the consumption tax would unfairly target marginalized communities, etc. In response to that, I say that in all honesty I would be open to a "progressive" consumption tax to help move things forward. Low percentage tax on cheaper, more common items, and a higher percentage on expensive luxury goods.
Without trying to drive this into a bomb-throwing session, I would love to hear your thoughts on this. I am all fingers crossed for this!
