This post is very off topic. So today I happened to spend several hours on YouTube watching “reaction videos” to folks hearing Stevie Ray for the first time. This was interesting to me being a kid who grew up in Austin when Stevie Ray was a kid and just getting started. I watched Stevie live several times when he was working his way up.
Today was different though, and it really shocked me a little.
Several of the reaction videos were interesting…the folks listening to him for the first time, actually started to tear up as they watched him. This made me hear him for the first time again. His emotion when he played was just…heartbreaking. The way he just connected with the music he played. Especially his early live videos (Texas Flood, Lenny, etc.).
I was watching one of his old live videos with my wife and I asked her “when you watch him, what is the first word that comes to mind for you?”. Her response was “talent”.
My first thought was “pain”. I know he had a tough childhood growing up. His dad was apparently really hard on him. But damn. The way he channeled that. Just made me really, really sad that we have lost someone who was such an amazing artist.
I guess that’s it.
