Overthinking on offense

While comments on the Texas D and the play of the secondary are justified, it did appear that all throughout the 2nd half the offense was constantly looking to the sidelines for the next play. There was little continuity, much confusion and several false starts. Interchanging Buechele and Swoopes in the middle of series will not work either. Their calls must be crisp if the pace of a hurry-up offense is to work well.

Tyrone Swoopes should not throw the deep ball-ever. He is wildly inaccurate. On the short and intermediate routes, our WRs were making acrobatic catches in wide open field (because the throws were bad).

SB loves to throw deep-too much. Sterling Gilbert should design our passing game like it was when Colt was here-more short and intermediate routes and get the ball out fast.

I agree. In fact I would go ahead and make the statement that we lost because our offense did not produce from late in the first half.
The defense held Cal to 0 points in the second half until well into the 4th quarter. That should be plenty of time and opportunity to put the game away.
we also produced an egg during the same time frame.

We tried to be too multiple. We should have run and run.
Cal kept doing what we could not stop. We did less of what they could not stop.

Sterlin Gilbert's inexperience showed in the second half.

No reason for alarm. This team will be very very good by the end of the year. I still believe we will win 9 or 10 games.

It was the last drive of the 1st half that changed the game. 1:30 to go, D has just gotten a stop. Up 5. You want to score with no time on the clock and a FG or TD are both good. What do we do, we throw long on 1st down and get picked. I mean even a quick TD is NOT what you want. That play changed the momentum of the game. With 2 TOs, we should have been running or throwing short underneath to Oliver. Gilbert may be a great offensive mind, but he really cost us on that call. You could feel the whole momentum of the game change on that play and the TD that should never have happened.

Agree. I kept, watching the second half thinking why aren't we going up tempo. I thought that wa the point of bringing Gilbert on board. Seemed like we kept slowing it down.

I don't think it was over thinking that got us in trouble. I think the plan was solid but OL penalties took us out of the plan. I think Gilbert saw that we were gashing them up the middle and said "they won't be able to stop the 18 wheeler. I think he was right, but what would happen is we'd get a false start or a hold and force us in long situations and Shane had to come back in. Honestly I think Gilbert would of ran 18 wheeler all night and won the game had the OL allowed us to.
