Here are a few quick observations from the limited portion of practice we were allowed to watch on Wednesday morning:
--- Texas quarterback Sam Ehlinger was taking first-team reps during individual drills at practice. We did not see any 11-on-11 work, so I am not sure if he took first-team reps or was on the sidelines. He looked normal when I saw him.
--- Speaking of Ehlinger, I thought he was dropping dimes to receivers on go-routes. He had a pretty pass to Joshua Moore, which was impressive considering the speed of his receiver. It seems like the timing between Ehlinger and his receivers is where the staff would want it to be.
--- I focused on freshman quarterback Roschon Johnson and was pretty impressed. Johnson has a great spiral on his passes. His touch on deep passes is pretty damn good. In addition, he has a quick release. I am not saying he deserves to be Ehlinger’s backup right now. Instead, I am just saying Johnson has a lot of positive attributes.
--- Joshua Moore, D’Shawn Jamison, Jordan Whittington and receiver Travis West received reps at punt return. Moore’s catching ability really stood out to me. He is very smooth and fluid. When he is out there, it just looked natural. Again, nothing against the other guys. Each guy looks good. However, Moore caught my attention.
--- Damn, Jordan Whittington looks good out there. While running crossing routes, Whittington flies through those drills. His take off and ability to hit maximum speed is impressive.
--- Tight ends coach Derek Warehime seemed to be happy during the blocking drills with Cade Brewer, Reese Leitao and Jared Wiley. Not a lot of corrections were needed.
--- Former Texas offensive line Garrett Graf has been working with offensive line coach Herb Hand as a grad assistant. During blocking sled drills, the offensive line is divided in half, and Graf coaches guys on his own. He put his hands in the dirt multiple times to give instruction. I saw him working with Rafiti Ghirmai on the sled, and it is clear he has the trust of this coaching staff.
--- Cornerbacks coach Jason Washington worked with Kobe Boyce on proper technique during man-to-man coverage. After having him run it again, Washington was satisfied.
--- B.J. Foster and Montrell Estell were working at safety on Wednesday. Foster looks comfortable out there. He glides out during pre-snap looks, and attacks with determination.
--- Linebacker Ayodele Adeoye’s change of direction is really good. He does not have heavy feet. I like what I see from Adeoye when he is out there.
I will provide you with updates from Tom Herman after practice.
