Tuesday marked the seventh spring practice under Tom Herman this season. Here are a few quick observations from the limited amount of time we were allowed to watch practice.
- Tom Herman said running back Tristian Houston hyperextended his knee, while Phillpp Moeller sustained a head injury.
- To nobody’s surprise, Jerrod Heard, Collin Johnson and Devin Duvernay received first-team reps on Tuesday. It appears Duvernay continues to earn the trust of Herman and receivers coach Drew Mehringer because he continues to receive first-team reps
- Meanwhile, receiver Brennan Eagles continues to run with third-team receivers and walk-ons His primary quarterback during those drills was Casey Thompson.
- The footwork of the cornerbacks Jason Washington is working with looks dramatically different now than in week one. When guys are backpedaling during chute drills, you rarely hear their helmet hit the metal. It happened one time during several drills, and Washington said, “I hear Jingle Bells going on. Get low.” Davante Davis and Kris Boyd looked great during chute drills. They joked about having burning legs, but led the way.
- If you are looking for a sign of leadership, as redshirt freshman Kobe Boyce was participating in defensive back drills (backpedaling before accelerating forward to grab an interception), a member of that group thought he was not low enough. I could not tell which player yelled it out, but somebody shouted, “Get low” at Boyce. Washington agreed and explained why it was so important to get low. Herman previously said veterans were helping young players, and this is just one example.
- If there ever was a time to buy stock in safety B.J. Foster, get it now. Foster looks like a guy who could start in the season opener. Foster explodes to the ball during drills. His speed is noticeable when compared to the other guys doing drills. During one drill when Foster had to back pedal and then accelerate forward twice before grabbing a loose ball, he moved at a lightning-quick pace. Foster definitely looks the part.
- Texas defensive lineman Chris Nelson participated in the individual portion of practice, but not in contact drills. He continues to wear a green jersey during practice.
- As we were being escorted out of practice, I saw Shane Buechele connect on a 35-yard touchdown pass to Jerrod Heard with Donovan Duvernay attempting to cover the receiver. It was a beautifully thrown touchdown pass during one-on-one drills. No matter what, Buechele throws a pretty ball in practice. I did not have a chance to see Sam Ehlinger throw.
- Defensive line coach Oscar Giles slowed the pace for the portion of practice we watched. It was basically like watching a walk-through, making it hard to determine who stood out.
- I will have more updates from Herman after his post-practice interview.
