Recruiting tactics

Those who adorn their trucks with confederate flags and scantily clad chicks, and who try to compensate for smallness elsewhere by the size of their truck -- they tend to love A&M.
And usually fail out of Blinn before they even get to A&M.

A&M isn't meaningless. By its sheer size alone, it attracts a good percentage of students from our state and others.

Is it in the middle of nowhere? Of course. But Austin's not that far away, if you need culture.

Does it attract more than its fair share of neanderthals (racists, sexists, xenophobes...)? Sure. They have to go somewhere if they want a degree. Those who adorn their trucks with confederate flags and scantily clad chicks, and who try to compensate for smallness elsewhere by the size of their truck -- they tend to love A&M.

But they have great programs in engineering, math and veterinary medicine, among others.
Well, what if your kids don't get into UT? Then they go to A&M, OU, Tech. So, follow Prudence Macintosh's advice and never disparage an institution of higher learning, your kid may end up going there.

My kid goes to A&M for Engineering. I don't make fun of the school as much as the football program and yes their weird dances and cheers. She loves where she's at and seems to not have any issues. She knows where my hearts at when it comes to fandom and she still asks me how UT is doing. Her head is in the books so much she really doesn't get to enjoy college life yet so she hasn't turned into the delusional A&M Football fan. I already have friends that graduated from there and deal with it!

I teach school and it seems that getting into Texas is not the problem so much as getting into the specific discipline. Your Asian population buoys this quite a bit. it is the only true minority discrepancy between the two universities if I'm not mistaken. you have 17% and we have around 7% or so.

If I'm not mistaken and it's probably changing I think women to men at A&M was a big difference between the schools as well.

Well that and visiting black high school kids being yelled at on visits to dixie station and shown confederate flag earrings and told to "go back where you came from" and called the N-word. Besides that, yeah pretty similar as far as diversity on the two campuses goes.

Not racist. Factual. Other minority percentages at both schools are virtually identical. I was mistaken. We have 6.2 % Asian. Also, our "Cocks not Glocks" campaign never got off the ground, which disappointed us all greatly. The other huge disparity between the Schools is crime. Again, factual.

So diverse. I always enjoy the Where's Waldo game at aggy functions:

Students at Texas A&M University took to social media this week to share their experiences with racism on campus.

Led by the Texas A&M Chapter of the NAACP, students used #RacismAtTAMUFeelsLike to participate and share their stories with others.

UT's engineering dept is smaller, but ranks higher.

Yeah I did all the research before hand. She applied at UT as well and they accepted her but not for Engineering so she went with A&M. We have plenty of friends in the Engineering field she'll do fine plus interning.

No irony in posting a picture of a whole bunch of white people to prove everyone else is a racist.

I'm not defending a&m in any way, but you can also take a pic at DKR and most other stadiums around the country and they would look like this as well.

You do know that you now have to be in the top 6% of your class for auto admission to UT-Austin? Plus that top 6% fills over 90% of an incoming class.

UT is has 3.5 times as many Asian students with 22% Asian to 6.4%. UT has about 40% more black students, 5% more Hispanic, and 20% more under multi-racial. Add in 3 times as many international students at UT.

4.4% vs 3.2% African/American is 40% more, but come on, your Hispanic population is 23.9 to 22.9. You just made my point about the Asian population. They have a very achievement-oriented culture. I agree that it is more difficult to get into Texas with the 6% rule. Is that to keep more minorities out?

Very true. But we don't have to be proud of it. (JK)

Both my kids chose UT-Austin and were accepted there. One works towards a B.S. in math. The other is a HS senior who just got accepted into her chosen program, design.

Hook 'em, baby!

No, it is to meet the state of Texas admission rules of being required to take the top X% of Texas high school students. With the cap on freshman class size and Texas' population growth that X% keeps getting tougher/smaller. It started out at 10% and is now at 6% to maintain the state's mandate.

A&M is 64% white and UT Austin is 45%

Your question did make me curious enough to pull up UT- Dallas' demographics since it is quickly becoming the #2 public college in Texas for academics.

0.2% American Indian/Alaskan Native
30.6% Asian
6.2% Black/African-American
19.1% Hispanic/Latino
4.5% Multi-race (not Hispanic/Latino)
0.2% Native Hawaiian/ Pacific Islander
37.0% White
2.1% Unknown

https://www.collegedata.com/cs/data/college/college_pg06_tmpl.jhtml?schoolId=273

So going by UT-D demographics the top 10% rule that was put in place 20 some years ago to create more opportunities for blacks and hispanics is now protecting white kids spots at UT-Austin.

The best thing would be to forbid all state institutions from discriminating on the basis of race. Treat everybody alike. I'm against diversity....of ability.

I agree but the reason that AA was put in place is due to discriminating on the basis of race so as long as the good ole boy club is good riddance I agree.

What does that even mean? I was in medical school 1972-76. The school admitted a few black students. Most, but not all of the unqualified flunked. I have since come across a Puerto Rican from the Bronx who went to Yale. Most incompetent doctor I ever met.
