Recruiting Thread 2017

With the high school season beginning this weekend and the Longhorns preparing for their own big-time opener against Notre Dame next Sunday, the focus for the players and UT coaches is on getting themselves and their team ready for live action. As such, there hasn't been a ton of earth-shattering recruiting developments over the past few weeks. To change things up, we checked with some different people connected to a number of the Longhorns' top out-of-state recruiting targets to get the latest and see where UT stands.

IMG Academy (Fl.) LB Dylan Moses - Moses has slipped a bit in the Rivals.com rankings (he's now just outside five-star status) but he's still one of the country's hottest prospects. He'll take an official visit to Texas the weekend of October 14, when the Longhorns host Iowa State (yawn). His other official visits are set for Alabama, Miami, UCLA and Ohio State.

Source who covers IMG Academy says:"I still think LSU is the team to beat for him. I think Texas has a fighting chance. I think he'll leave. I don't really think the Florida schools have a chance. It will be an SEC/Texas battle. Ole Miss in there a little too, but I think LSU is the team to beat."

My thoughts:A couple things to consider here ... Moses has been on the UT campus a couple times already, but getting him in for an official visit is huge. And, he and his father are both huge fans of the UT coaching staff. Those are the positives.

Moses got all Longhorn fans excited when he listed Texas as his leader following a visit in early April, but I never quite bought into that declaration. I still don't. Moses is from Louisiana originally and was a long-time LSU commitment before opening things up. I still think this one swings back to LSU (barring something happening with Les Miles) with Alabama the second most likely landing spot. The Longhorns certainly have a chance because of Moses' feelings towards the UT coaches, but Texas may have to catch lightning in a bottle during his official visit for this one to work out.

Lakeland (Fl.) RB A.J. Davis - He was an early offer for Texas, but things have been pretty quiet between Davis and the Longhorns (more on that in a second). Davis has a ton of offers but isn't what I'd call proactive with the recruiting process. He doesn't talk much and has yet to set up any official visits.

State of Florida recruiting source says:"I think Texas can get him if they press. They're in a good situation. This area is loaded with running backs. Florida got theirs (Adarius Lemons). Florida State got theirs (Khalan Laborn and Zaquandre White). Miami is not really pressing him. So there's a good chance for regional schools to get in. I think Texas can definitely be involved there. Oklahoma is involved there. Texas definitely has a shot if they press him."

My thoughts:When I talked to Davis recently, he said he would like to hear more from the Longhorns, but here's the kicker ... Texas has reached out, but Davis can be damn near impossible to track down. Assuming the lines of communication open up during the fall, there's a very good chance Davis will come into Austin for a visit, if that's the route the coaches want to go. La Grange's J.K. Dobbins is UT's top RB target despite his commitment to Ohio State, but Davis is a heck of a player in his own right and Texas has a legitimate chance in this one based on my conversations with Davis.

Montgomery (Ala.) Jefferson Davis DE Alec Jackson - He's rated as only a three-star prospect, but Jackson's offer list would suggest that he deserves consideration for a higher standing. The 6-4, 238-pounder made his way to Austin for the Under the Lights camp in July, so there is a legitimate interest in Texas. That being said, Davis was very noncommittal about leaders or official visits when we talked to him last month.

Source says: "He's one I think Texas has a shot with. He doesn't talk about recruiting a ton, but the last time he and I spoke, he mentioned Texas a lot. He's definitely in play. He likes the schools in his region, but they aren't pressing that hard. His recruitment could change if schools start working down the stretch but right now Texas is definitely in there."

My thoughts: Basically, I agree with the take above. Texas is one of several schools that has a legitimate shot in this one. It will all come down to an official visit ... if UT can get him back on campus, the Longhorns should move into the lead pack. If not, no chance.

Mobile (Al) St. Paul's DE Ryan Johnson - A fairly recent UT offer that came in earlier this month, Johnson doesn't say much so it's tough to get a good read on him. He does have a pretty ridiculous list of scholarship offers, including all the top dogs in the Southeast, so it's probably going to be tough to get him out of that region.

Source who covers his school:"A lot of people like him. It's tough to pull highly-ranked kids out of Alabama if Auburn or Bama wants them. If you look through history, it doesn't happen very often. I think Auburn was his first offer and they still like him, so they may be the team to beat. But sometimes they maybe a kid for granted, have other kids higher, maybe Texas can sneak in there. But I think Auburn is the team to beat. Stanford is lurking a little bit."

My thoughts:Any time a top prospect in the state of Alabama has an offer from both Alabama and Auburn, I'm a bit skeptical of UT's chances. I do think Johnson does have some genuine level of interest in Texas, but this is going to be a tough pull. (Suchomel)

******

Hutto defensive end Ondario Robinson, who holds a UT offer, was planning to commit on the day of his team's opener against Bryan (this Friday).

Robinson has been pretty open about A&M being his leader and the thought by a couple sources close to the Aggie football program was that Robinson was all set to commit to A&M this week. Not just yet ...

Robinson has decided to postpone his commitment, and one person we talked to this week said he is expected to attend the Longhorns' home-opener against Notre Dame. This one is still leaning A&M's way, but if Texas can put on a good showing next weekend the scales could tip back UT's way. (Suchomel)

******

Top offensive lineman Chuck Filiaga made the move from California to Aledo (TX) this summer. One person we talked to this week, who is dialed in to Filiaga's recruitment, thinks it's most likely Filiaga returns to Cali for college ball, but said the Longhorns are still very much in the picture for the Rivals250 member.

"The latest I know, it's really going to come down to whether he wants to stay in Texas. A lot of people think he wants to come back to California, but he's so undecided if he wants to come back, stay in Texas or go to the SEC," the source said. "That's why I think Texas, even an Ole Miss, LSU, Bama, OU and A&M are still piquing his interest. I think through his senior season, he'll figure out if he likes it in Texas or wants to go back (to Cali). My gut tells me he probably wants to come back. I asked him one time if he's staying or coming back. He said 'Hah, I'm not staying there.' But that was before he ever went (to Texas), so that could change. I sense he will take his visits, then go from there, but I think USC is the team to beat right now." (Suchomel)

Inside Texas saying this morning they believe OU's recruitment of LB Anthony Hines is going south, one of the reasons being a lack of numbers. Hines should be down to A&M and UT, with Hines now announcing his commitment on the same day as LB Baron Browning.

Also from Inside Texas, DE Taquon Graham of Temple is a "maybe" for the Notre Dame game if he can find a ride. He'll be on commitment watch if he makes it to campus.

Wow! That's an impressive group coming for the ND game. A Texas win would make a big impression on these guys.

Per TFB:
Texas Commits in Week 1: The high school football season kicked off this week and a few Texas commits had big starts to their senior seasons.

QB Sam Ehlinger vs Katy: 18/30 250 yards passing, 64 yards and 2 TD’s on 16 carries in a 32-29 win.

WR Damion Miller vs Plano East: 4 catches for 122 yards and 2 TD’s in a 45-14 win.

DB Josh Thompson vs Kilgore: 6 tackles, forced fumble and recovery, and a 95-yard KO return TD in a 48-21 win.

DE Lagaryonn Carson vs Gilmer: 7 tackles and 2 sackes in a 61-55 loss.

More Visitors for Texas vs. Notre Dame: Below are a few more visitors that were confirmed over the weekend.

Baron Browning: This is the big one. Andrew tweeted out yesterday that Browning would be visiting and I also confirmed it with Browning’s father. Browning is visiting Texas…a lot. It’s starting to feel more and more like the Horns are the team to beat if they can put some W’s on the board.

Josh Thomson: Texas commit.

Keondre Coburn: The talented 2018 DT tells me that he hopes to make it to Austin for the game this Sunday as well. Coburn already holds offers from schools like Oklahoma, Michigan and TAMU but it feels like he really wants that Texas offer.

Anthony Cook: Andrew also noted that top 2018 CB, Anthony Cook will visit for the game. – (Super K)

Higdon was also reporting the same earlier this past weekend. Very good news.

"Quick update on Texas 2017 QB commit Sam Ehlinger. He met with doctors Monday and will have surgery Tuesday to repair the torn meniscus in his left knee. He'll probably be out 3-4 weeks with his return perhaps in time for Westlake's game at Vandergrift on Sept. 23."

OL Adrian Ealy of Gonzales, LA talks about setting up an official visit to UT (OrangeBloods):

"I'm going to talk to coach (Charlie) Strong later on this week, try to figure out my official visit, work with him on my football schedule," Ealy said.

"I've been texting with them, contact with them. Mainly coach Strong, he texts me," Ealy said. "He just really gives me motivation, tells me to prepare myself for that week, shows me how to be a leader. He texts me quotes from past greats."

"It's their location, the education, coach Strong, all the coaching staff," Ealy said. "And the way they text me, giving me love."

"I'm going to have to go with Texas," Ealy said. "I know Notre Dame has a good on d-line but I think they're young. Texas has had some injuries, but I think Texas' skill players are still better than Notre Dame."

///

Plano East Linebacker Anthony Hines announced this week that he would make his commitment on November 29th. That day could potentially be a great one for the Texas staff. Kennedale linebacker Baron Browning is also announcing on that date, and Texas will be in the running for both. We aren’t sure if there is any significance to both announcing on that date, but it should definitely be something to circle on your calendar.

///

Friday night featured a matchup in 5A ball between two strong programs with a ton of talent on the field. Lancaster’s Omar Manning was the main event for those covering Texas, but Denton Ryan won the game due to an electric effort by 2018 quarterback Spencer Sanders. While the Longhorns haven’t zeroed in on their quarterback targets in the next class, we are told Sanders is a guy on the short list. Sanders has spoken with Sterlin Gilbert a few times, but the contact has been sporadic so far. We anticipate Sanders’ recruitment to pick up with Texas this season, but he’s also being pursued by several big time schools. Sanders started slow, but he really cranked it up in the third quarter to lead Ryan to a victory. 2018 Ryan receiver Gabriel Douglas was the big weapon for Sanders. Douglas is a long, athletic receivers with big time playmaking skills. We were not able to speak with him after the game, but you can bet that he will be highly sought after in the next cycle.

Omar Manning was hampered by a hamstring issue that’s nagged him since the summer. He saw double and triple teams all night, but he was able to get free on a 49 yard touchdown pass and burn and his pursuers for the score. We spoke with Manning after the game, and he told us he’s pushed back his college decision once again. Manning is working on setting up official visits, and he tells us he’d like to unofficially visit Austin for the Notre Dame game if he can make it. We still feel Texas is in a strong position to win out here, but they will have a battle on their hands against TCU and Oklahoma. The way this has gone, I’d expect it to extend all the way out to the end of the season.

////

Things didn’t go well for Cedar Hill in their anticipated matchup against Bishop Gorman. We were at the game, but weren’t able to speak with many players afterwards. If you watched the game you might have noticed Cedar Hill receiver Charleston Rambo and his big play ability. We’ve said multiple times that the Oklahoma commit would be open to hearing from Texas, and our sources told us that could very well happen during the season. It would be a tough race to win for Texas, but there is a chance if the Longhorns start to pursue. Just something to keep an eye on.

OL Adrian Ealy of Gonzales, LA says he'll be committing on October 14th, according to 24/7. He is an early enrollee.

Recent quotes from five-star LB Baron Browning of Kennedale (24/7):

“I’m excited for it (senior season),” Browning said. “I’m trying to reach some of the goals that I set last year. I didn’t get all of them, so I want to do that this year. From a defensive perspective, we know what buttons we have to push to get everything right.”

“I don’t have a list right now,” Browning said. “I’m just chilling, to be honest. I’m still trying to figure out all my officials. You only get five, so I’m trying to figure everything out with my parents.”

“I talked to Coach BJ a few days ago,” Browning said. “He just said he’s going to hit me up a lot more. He was getting the guys ready for the season. Coach Jennings has been hitting me up, too. Usually, Coach Strong hits me up the most, but he’s getting ready for the season, so I’m not worried about it.”

“I want to see how they match up against a good school like Notre Dame,” Browning said. “It will be a good matchup. I’m pretty excited to see it. I think Texas has a good team, but they just have to be consistent."

“When Coach Strong first came in, those guys weren’t the ones he recruited. It’s more so just trying to find a way to get everybody to click. I think everyone is coming together, and they’ll have a good season. Rome wasn’t built in one day.”

I know we are all in for Dobbins but Swift just committed to UGA I wonder if that changes things for Toniel Carter... He's a beast but he always seemed like he was going OOS to LSU or UGA anyways. Just something to think about in the slows days until Sunday....

Obviously, a win this weekend would be huge to give the Longhorns a shot in the arm in recruiting. A lot of the top 2017 guys, especially Marvin Wilson, have been pretty open in that they're just waiting to see if Texas shows progress on the field before they can fully say how Texas fits into the race.

A loss certainly won't be catastrophic, since we've seen that this staff has been able to recruit exceptionally well even after some on-field struggles. If Texas is competitive in a close loss, and it's a rowdy atmosphere at the game, it should only help the Longhorns' recruiting efforts.

The one thing Texas cannot afford is a loss where the Longhorns really aren't in the game. That scenario would likely waste any boost Texas should get from the fan atmosphere, and it obviously goes against the "progress" that guys like Wilson like to see.

The one game won't make or break UT's recruiting efforts this year, but a good showing on Sunday could very well be the stepping stone that propels Texas to a terrific 2017 recruiting season. This game is big. (Suchomel)

******

The 2017 prospects will steal the majority of the spotlight, but don't sleep on the fact that 2018 CB Anthony Cook will be at the game.

Cook, out of Houston Lamar, has been to UT numerous times (including for the UTL camp, where he actually worked out), and he's the highest-rated prospect in the state for 2017 in the latest Rivals.com rankings.

A four-star prospect, Cook is ranked No. 14 in the most recent 2017 Rivals100. He hasn't come out with any formal list of leader, but I think it's a pretty comfortable assumption to say the Longhorns are the early team to beat. Cook will be at the Oklahoma-Houston game (a contest that will host a pretty good group of recruits in itself) before making his way to Austin on Sunday.

"I'm just hoping to see the guys get after it, see what my guys do, my cousin (Eric Cuffee) and my former teammate Holton Hill," Cook said. "And I want to see them win."

Key quote:Cook said he'd like to trim his list sometime after his junior season, possibly next summer. Whether it's a top five or a top 10, expect the Longhorns to make the cut.

"I'm pretty sure they will. The chances of that are really high. I'm pretty sure Texas will make that cut," Cook said. "Any time I go to Texas, it feels like it's home. When I talk to the coaches (Vance Bedford and Clay Jennings) and stuff, it's just a feeling I can't explain. The atmosphere feels good, just feels like home."

Wants to see a win, but ...:Cook mentioned that he wants to witness a UT win on Sunday. He's not a guy who is going to flip out though if the Longhorns come up on the short end of the stick. If that happens, he said, he'll simply view it as a sign that he could come in and make an early impact.

"It wouldn't impact my decision at all. Even if they go out there, have not so good of a game, I still feel like if they're not playing well, I can contribute and help them win games," Cook said. (Suchomel)

A couple weeks ago, Houston St. Pius X 2019 quarterback Grant Gunnell took in a UT scrimmage. Gunnell, who figures to be one of the top players in the state for his class, will be back in Austin on Sunday to watch the Notre Dame game.

We caught up with Gunnell to check in.

Key quote:"They said they like to wait a little bit but I'm their guy right guy right now," Gunnell said on what Texas' message was.

Who is Gunnell?:A 6-5, 194-pounder, Gunnell just started his sophomore year of high school but he already has offers from Florida State, Houston, Oklahoma State, Texas A&M and Texas State.

When Gunnell mentioned that Texas likes to wait on extending offers, I asked him what he thought of UT's stance.

"That's awesome," he said.

Doesn't sound like a kid that's going to get caught up in the love affair with schools that offer early, which is smart. He'll have more offers than he can count when it's all said and done.

"I'm just kind of just taking it all in right now, honestly. I'm waiting to see what every school has to offer," Gunnell said. "There are not really any favorites. I like everyone right now."

In his team's season-opener last week, Gunnell completed 26-of-36 passes for 470 yards and 4 TDs. He added about 30 yards on the ground and another TD.

Busy weekend:Gunnell will be at A&M's game on Saturday and then will head to Austin on Sunday for the Longhorns' opener. He said he also plans to check out games at Oklahoma, Oklahoma State and Florida State at some point this fall.

Thoughts on Texas:Gunnell enjoyed his visit to UT a couple weeks ago, including his conversations with the Texas coaches.

"I really like coach (Sterlin) Gilbert and coach Strong. I thought they were really cool," Gunnell said. "I liked what the team was doing during the scrimmage too. Everything was really upbeat. (Suchomel)

******

Texas DB commitment Montrell Estell will be at the game on Sunday. We touched base with Estell this week.

The standout from Hooks said he recorded about 15 tackles, one forced fumble and a fumble recovery in his team's season-opening loss. Not a bad start, but Estell said he wants to continue to improve.

"I'm focused on getting better with my performance overall. I'm going to improve on hitting more, things like that," Estell said. "It's already good but it can be better."

Sunday will be Estell's first time to see a UT game live. He said he isn't coming in with any expectations, and instead will try to just "enjoy it."

"I hope Texas pulls it out. I was upset last year when Notre Dame put it on them, so I hope we can come out and show better," Estell said.

Solid with Texas:Estell said he's not interested in hearing any other schools' sales pitches, and he's locked into his UT commitment. Things have gotten pretty quiet for him on the recruiting front, and he's fine with that.

"They've given up. They know I'm solid," Estell said. "It's less stress. They were blowing up my phone all the time." (Suchomel)

College football is back. Texas will open the season at home against Notre Dame in front of a sold out crowd that will include some of the top recruits in the nation. Here is a full breakdown of prospects slated to be in Austin on Sunday.

2017 targets

WR Omar Manning, Lancaster (Maybe) — One of two big maybes, Manning is Texas’ top target at the wide receiver position. The four-star prospect was supposed to announce his decision before the season but decided to push it back. Manning has not released a top schools list, but Oklahoma, TCU and Texas are the frontrunners in his recruitment.

OL Walker Little, Bellaire Episcopal — Dominant. That one word is the best way to describe Little, who moved up to No. 2 overall in 247Sports recruiting rankings. The 6-foot-8, 305-pounder is extremely athletic and could make an immediate impact at the next level. Right now, this appears to be a Stanford-Texas battle, but Alabama, Ole Miss and Florida State are in the mix.

DT Marvin Wilson, Bellaire Episcopal — A monster in the trenches, Wilson is Texas’ top target at the defensive tackle position. Many believed Wilson would end up going out of state, but the Longhorns have made a strong surge this offseason. In fact, UT is now a frontrunner in the Wilson sweepstakes. The biggest factor for Texas will be having a successful season.

DE Taquon Graham, Temple — The writing has been on the wall for a while. Texas should land a commitment from Graham when it’s all said and done. The four-star prospect was supposed to announce in the spring but pushed things back. Still, Texas has remained the heavy favorite with Oklahoma and TCU fighting to stay alive.

DE K’Lavon Chaisson, North Shore (Maybe) — Perhaps the best pass rusher in the state, Chaisson would be a perfect fit at Texas as a ‘Fox’ end. And he’s certainly buying into it. Over the last couple of months, Texas has gone from somewhat of an afterthought to a major contender in Chaisson’s recruitment. If he does make it to campus for the second time this summer, watch out.

DE Ondario Robinson, Hutto — It’s unclear just how hard Texas is pushing for Robinson, but he’s certainly in the mix. Robinson received an offer from the Longhorns in the spring and attended Under The Lights. While Graham is the prize at strong-side defensive end, Robinson would be a solid addition. Right now, Texas A&M is in the lead for his services.

OLB Baron Browning, Kennedale — Maybe the most important recruit in this class, Browning is an absolute monster on the field and has a magnetic personality that could get others to jump on board. In a sense, Browning is very similar to Texas sophomore linebacker Malik Jefferson, who is playing a big role in his recruitment. Texas and UCLA seem to be at the top of the list.

2017 commits

QB Sam Ehlinger, Austin Westlake — Ehlinger is completely solid to Texas and will spend most of his time on campus recruiting others to Austin.

WR Damion Miller, John Tyler — Miller is still looking at Ole Miss and Texas A&M, but his verbal pledge to the Longhorns has grown more solid.

OL Xavier Newman, DeSoto — Newman flirted with Oklahoma this summer but spots filled up, and it appears that he is content with Texas.

CB Kobe Boyce, Lake Dallas — Boyce will make an official visit to Oklahoma this month, but his commitment to the Longhorns is stronger than ever.

CB Josh Thompson, Nacogdoches — Thompson flipped his commitment from TCU to Texas this summer and is completely solid to the Longhorns.

ATH Montrell Estell, Hooks — The only other school in the mix is Alabama, but Estell is happy with his commitment to Texas and is solid.

2018 recruits

QB Jalen Mayden, Sachse — Texas has yet to offer a quarterback in the 2018 class. Mayden camped with UT this summer and is one the Longhorns’ radar.

WR Joshua Moore, Yoakum — Oklahoma and Texas A&M are squarely in the mix, but Texas appears to be the team to beat for Moore early on.

WR Jalen Preston, Manvel — Preston has always been high on Texas. A great season will put the Longhorns in prime position for the four-star prospect next cycle.

WR Stanley Lambert, SA Marshall — Lambert had a breakout performance at Undert The Lights last month and caught the attention of the UT staff.

WR Brennan Eagles, Alief Taylor — Eagles also caught the attention of the Texas coaching staff at Under The Lights and could be nearing an offer.

WR Drue Jackson, Sachse — A four-star prospect, Jackson camped with Texas this summer and has built a strong relationship with assistant Charlie Williams.

WR Kalon Barnes, Silsbee — Barnes is another talented wide receiver that could be close to notching an offer from the Longhorns. Texas is high on him.

DT Silas Robinson, Yoakum — A Texas legacy, Robinson is a versatile player that can line up along both the offensive and defensive line. He holds a UTSA offer.

ILB Alston Orji, Rockwall — Texas extended an offer to Orji after his impressive summer camp showing in Dallas. UT is high on his list early on.

CB Anthony Cook, Houston Lamar — Arguably the top cornerback in the state next cycle, Cook is a baller and a major target for the Longhorns.

CB Dayven Coleman, West Mesquite — Coleman is searching for his first offer, but that should come soon. The three-star recruit had an excellent summer.

S Atanza Vongor, South Grand Prairie (Maybe) — Vongor attended Under The Lights and came away with an offer. Texas is making a big impression on him.

S Jordan Moore, Yoakum — The four-star prospect has set his decision date for December 24. Right now, Texas seems to be the favorite in his recruitment.

S Isaiah Humphries, Sachse — Humphries does not hold a Texas offer, but he is a four-star prospect that has the coaching staff’s attention.

2019 recruits

QB Grant Gunnell, Houston St. Pius X — Gunnell is the top quarterback in the state in the 2019 class and already holds multiple offers. Texas could join the mix soon.

S Anfernee Orji, Rockwall — The brother of the aforementioned Alston Orji, Afernee is an excellent player in his own right and should receive offers soon.

OrangeBloods has some big additions to the visitors list.

This will easily be the best recruiting turnout in years.

2017
OL, Stephan Zabie, Austin Westlake
LB, Devodrick Johnson, Dallas Kimball
CB, Chevin Calloway, Dallas Bishop Dunne

2018
WR, Ke'von Ahmad, Colleyville Heritage
TE, Malcolm Epps, Spring Dekaney
OL, Darrell Simpson, Justin Northwest
DT, Keondre Coburn, Spring Westfield
DE, Jarrell Cherry, Dallas Carter
S, Caden Sterns, Cibolo Steele

More on DE K'Lavon Chaisson from Inside Texas...after his game last night, he said OU is basically out of the running even though they once lead.

He mentioned some of the recruits they've picked up recently and he's starting to feel it's too far away from home.

He loves the way UT has been recruiting him with their no-pressure approach, but they've been locked in on him since "The Opening" in July.

I think this years recruiting will be interesting. I think Strong is very likely to,put together an 8-9 win year at least. With Baylor's issues, and LSU likely going through a coaching change I really think Strong will begin to lock down Texas

IT-In all the hustle and craziness that ensued after Tyrone Swoopes crossed the goal line to Texas' fans immortality, were recruits as wide-eyed as I've ever seen at a football game. Eric and I have said," if Texas wins, recruiting will take care of itself."

Well, I have an addendum. If Texas wins games in this manner, the recruits won't just ride to Austin, they'll run.

"Oh my God," said Baron Browning. "That was lit." Browning's face was one of shock and awe.

"Can you believe that," said Sam Ehlinger, walking with Walker Little, who by the way is freaking enormous. Just as big as Little is, was his smile. "Amazing."

One guy that this made a serious impression on; Levi Jones, Westlake LB. I'm hearing Jones is seriously considering Texas now and not just from after tonight.

Strong and Ehlinger and made major strides in his recruitment. If Texas wants three LBs in 2017, they could possibly grab Browning, Hines, and Jones. That's too nice.

Also bumped into Marvin Wilson, another giant among giants boasting a giant smile after a giant win. Texas already looked good with Wilson, but after tonight, a little better.

One recruit that didn't make it in was Temple's Taquon Graham. He suffered a hip injury on Friday night and decided to stay home and rest.

Recruiting is fun again. Let's enjoy the ride.

This one could get interesting if LSU fires Miles. LB Dylan Moses (Bradenton, FL)

LB Baron Browning (Kennedale), 2018 DE Jarell Cherry (Dallas Carter), DT Marvin Wilson (Bellaire Episcopal)

Rivals250 offensive tackle Chuck Filiaga released his top-ten list of schools following a busy football weekend, that started with leading his Aledo High School team to a 65-7 win over California-Westlake.

Recapping the Texas win vs. Notre Dame

“I definitely like Texas and that offense,” he said. “The crowd was just amazing. 102-thousand people in one spot is just killer.”

“I watched he offense and how they run it ... if I went there I could get comfortable pretty fast,” he added. “I have the best relationship with Texas - the whole staff - and I feel like I am top priority with them.”

Inside Scoop (J.Wells):

1. Baron, the Scholar

Every time I see this guy, I'm amazed. By his talent, his demeanor, and his overall maturity. Finding the right school to play football is important to the Brownings, but it comes with much more. Mainly; grades.

The academic side of this equation is as important, if not more, than the athletic portion. Education is not just talk in the Browning home, it's a way of life. From his brother graduating from Stanford, to his mom getting close to her Doctorate, your grades are everything in this squad. And at Texas, hitting the academic approach has been a home run where Strong flips the bat.

"The first thing that made me like Texas was that we didn't talk about football, we talked about academics. And in my household, that's very big. Education is huge in my home. Football doesn't last forever. The alumni, the networking, the academic side is so important when looking at these schools. Some coaches tweet at me that stuff, but they don't have the academic/networking side to back it up. I don't care that Texas went 5-7 last year, I care that the school is going to develop me as a technician - I've been going off athletic ability most my life - develop me as a young man, on and off the field, and at the end of the day, go to a university that can set me up for life after football."

Browning is interested in Computer Science and possibly owning his own computer business after football. His priorities are exactly where they need to be.

On the field, high school opponents are running away from Baron. Waco La Vega tried and failed.

"After my forced fumble (on the game's first play), Terrell decided to run away from me the rest of the night," said Browning. "I still stay locked in. I still keep my teammates locked in."

Terrell's speedster at running back broke free early in the 4th quarter and was almost certain to hit pay-dirt with the game's tying score. Until Baron happened. He caught the Tigers' tailback from 20 yards behind. USC coach Tommie Robinson looked at me and said," did he just do that?"

"People don't know how fast I am," said Browning. "We needed a play and I made it."

Stardom has just started to hit Baron. We've followed this 5-star since his sophomore season, but it's now finally sinking in to him that he's one of the nation's best.

"It hit me my sophomore year when I was named the country's top 2017 OLB," Browning said. "But honestly, I've stopped caring about that after my sophomore season. I'm just trying to ball out with my teammates and my brothers, and get better each day."

Baron will announce on November 29th, his father's birthday. He'll enroll early and participate in Spring drills at his future program.

His reaction after the Texas win over ND on Sunday night was priceless; shock and awe. "Oh my God."

Texas continues to look good here. Like 'all A's good.'

2. Carson's Future

The future for Texas 4-star commit Lagaryonn Carson continues to be cloudy. After solid performance in Weeks 1's loss to Gilmer (3 sacks, 3 TFLs), Carson was riding high. Weeks before, he went to Austin in front of the UIL board pleading for another year of eligibility, which was granted by a 5-4 vote, he stopped by the Texas facilities to visit with the coaches and players.

The Texas staff said he looked great, and even hung out with Malik Jefferson and sat in during the defensive team meetings.

"Seeing the coaches and Malik was great," said Carson. "Sitting in the meetings was really cool. You see how the program works from the inside." Carson was trending up.

Then late last week, he mouth and temper got the best of him. After an argument and disrespecting his defensive coordinator at Liberty-Eylau during a practice, LE coach Steve Wells had no choice but to suspend him. It was reported by Carthage broadcasters and another site that he was kicked off the team. That's untrue.

At this point, Carson needs to make amends with Wells and his DC. Those coaches have gone out of their way to keep Carson on the straight and narrow when at times Carson didn't give them a reason to. He needs to apologize in front of the team, and make things right, especially with Wells.

At this point, his suspension could be lifted this Friday or a month from now. All I know is that Carson is a kid that needs serious direction. He takes two steps forward, one step back. He's exactly the type of kid that needs Charlie Strong in his life. Carson needs Texas more than Texas needs Carson.

UT is going to stay by him for now. For how long, that's anyone's guess. Here's hoping that trend line starts back upward.

3. News/Notes after TX-ND

Sam Ehlinger (Westlake, QB - 2017): "(Sunday) night was just a glimpse of what the future holds for Texas football. I think for recruiting purposes it was huge, not only for the guys that were at the game, but all over the country because everyone wants to go to Texas, it's just a matter of we're winning or not."

My take: Orange house.

Montrell Estell (Hooks, ATH - 2017): "It was very exciting and the fans were extremely loud the whole game. I didn't talk to many recruits, it was just so many people you couldn't hardly do or hear anything. Incredible scene."

My take: The bEASTtexas athlete is ready to man the secondary at DBU next fall.

Joshua Moore (Yoakum, WR - 2018): "DKR was crazy man, the atmosphere was amazing! The crazy part is I walked up in the stands and I heard the fans calling my name. They were like "Yoakum, Texas in the building." I felt the love. The coaches told me,' you know you want to come here. Come be apart of something special.'"

My take: His twin, Jordan, is in the bag. Josh is close. He's got some Kris Boyd in him; loves the recruiting attention. But with his mom (UT grad), brother (future UT grad), and relationship with Jeff Traylor, I'd be surprised to see him anywhere but Austin. Still, it's early.

Damion Miller (John Tyler, WR - 2017): "(DKR) was crazy lit. I'll have Shane (Buechele) and Sam (Ehlinger) at QB. That's exciting. I would love that (Shane and Sam); they can throw me the deep ball. Man, I can't wait."

My take: The John Tyler-to-Texas pipeline continues.

Levi Jones (Austin Westlake, LB - 2017): "Crazy atmosphere. It was a great game, exciting the whole way through. Yeah, Sam's in my ear a lot (about Texas) but I've always thought as time went on coach Strong has been getting the program back to "the standards" or whatever you want to call it. I mean I think a lot of the others (recruits) can agree too that, yes, Texas is looking better."

My take: This one has really turned. Just when I was ready to write this kid off to out-of-state (LSU or USC), Strong and Sam are pushing the right buttons. Texas is in this one, y'all.

Kalon Barnes (Silsbee, WR - 2018): "Wild! It was lots and lots of people. Coach Murphy and coach Williams talked to me before the game. They were just saying come back soon. Everything stood put. I just wish I could have got a tour though the school. I'll have to come back."

My take: This kid has been a soft A&M lean for months now. This kid is also a freakish athlete on the Josh Moore level and UT made up ground Sunday.

QUOTABLE QUOTE:

"I just want to see good things this season. I’m really hoping they can have a great season. I love coach Strong. I want him to be successful. I like a lot of the players on that team, so I’m excited for them this season.” - Walker Little

MUSTAPHA

Eric recently wrote up one of the rising stars from Ridge Point, Chad Bailey. While Bailey's stock is rising, one of the stars of the 2018 class is Ridge Point's TE, Mustapha Muhammad.

Muhammad is a smooth runner and pass catcher who also is not afraid to get his hands dirty blocking. He moves his 6-foot-4, 230 pound frame well.

Muhammad made the double trip this weekend to both A&M and Texas. From Muhammad himself, it sounded like he enjoyed his weekend.

"Lots of noise and tradition going on and UT played well. Offense looked crisp and balanced. Had some fun too."

Muhammad has interest in Notre Dame as well, so he got the chance to see how both schools utilized the position.

"Both schools had tight ends on the field the whole time. I liked that, but wasn't too intrigued by the amount of throws to the tight end. But it was just one game. I'll have to go back and see what happens throughout the season."

Muhammad said he plans to visit TCU and OU in the coming weeks, and plans to see big games featuring LSU and Bama as well as Ohio State and Michigan. He also wants to take a trip to South Bend.

This sounds like another case where prospects want to see how the offense uses the tight end. I've been told that Muhammad and A&M head coach Kevin Sumlin communicate regularly and have a solid relationship.

From Burton on 24/7 this morning...

Recruiting is poised to take yet another major step forward.

I'm told that multiple high level recruits, players who are currently committed to other programs, have reached out to various Texas coaches in the past 48 hours. Some of these players are committed to both in-state and out-of-state programs.

When I say "multiple", I'm not talking about 2 or 3.

I'm talking in the 10+ range. Some of it has been via text and Twitter and some of it via phone calls directly to the coaches.

And it's not just the players, nor are we talking merely about in-state prospects. Parents have also reached out as well, and so have players from multiple states across the country. In fact, there have been a couple who have reached out that Texas has had no prior contact with at all.

Obviously, Texas can not pursue all of these players and some of them may not be what Texas is looking for at a certain position.

Nonetheless, expect Charlie Strong to keep the same attitude all the way through. Strong likes to get to know the players and parents, watch them through their senior seasons and then recruit them like mad when the time comes.

My guess is we'll likely start to hear more about specific players as soon as this week or next. But I think it's important to reiterate this: it's not just a couple of recruits who took notice of Sunday night's performance, and it's not just in-state recruits either.

If Texas can continue to build on this performance, it's the sort of game that could make Texas an even more national brand and destination for players across the country.

— According to a Louisiana source, four-star East Ascension (La.) offensive lineman Adrian Ealy is not a take for LSU at this time. Texas has made a push for Ealy and is right up there with Miami, Oklahoma and a couple of others in the race for his services. Ealy, who is an early enrollee, is working on scheduling an official visit this fall.

— Per multiple sources, Texas is still trying to push for four-star Mansfield athlete Paulson Adebo, who is currently committed to Notre Dame. It wouldn’t be surprising if Adebo makes it to a Texas game this year. The Longhorns like him as a cornerback.

— Another prospect committed elsewhere to keep an eye on is three-star Denton Ryan defensive end Earnest Brown. He is a firm pledge to Northwestern, but I’m told he could make an official visit to Texas this fall.

— Texas showed some early interest in Magnolia West cornerback Myles Jones, but I’m told the Longhorns are not really pursuing him at this time. Jones is committed to Texas A&M, and UT has not been in touch since May.

E.J. Holland: Who's next? Five potential UT commits:

Texas jumped 16 spots in the rankings with the commitment of four-star Temple defensive end Taquon Graham on Monday. So who's next? The Longhorns are building plenty of momentum on the field after knocking off Notre Dame and could pull in some more elite targets in the near future. He are five potential commit candidates that could be next to pull the trigger.

RB J.K. Dobbins - Dobbins is currently committed to Ohio State, but Texas remains a strong option for the talented ball carrier. Texas has made it known that Dobbins is their only option at the running back position this cycle. More success on the field could lead to Dobbins flipping to his childhood favorite. He is an early enrollee and must finalize things soon.

WR Omar Manning - Manning was slated to make his decision before the season but pushed it back. Oklahoma, TCU and Texas are the three schools squarely in the mix for his services. Manning's biggest hesitation wit Texas was the new offense. But the unit looked explosive over the weekend. And if it continues to find success, it wouldn't be surprising to see Manning side with the Longhorns.

OT Walker Little - Little originally planned to make his decision during the season but recently said he wanted to wait until after his senior year. With that said, Texas is a frontrunner in his recruitment and with more success on the field, Little could get his decision over and done with sooner than expected. Stanford is UT's biggest threat, while Florida State, LSU and Ole Miss are all in the mix.

OT Adrian Ealy - We haven't talked much about Ealy, but Texas has quietly become a major threat to land the talented Louisiana blocker. Ealy is in the process of setting up an official visit to Texas and recently named UT as one of his top schools. An early enrollee, Ealy plans to pull the trigger and make a commitment on October 14.

DE Jarell Cherry (2018) - It might be early in his recruitment, but Cherry is extremely high on the Longhorns and said his eyes were really opened after the Longhorns' monumental win over Notre Dame on Sunday. Cherry has no decision timeframe, but an early commitment is not out of the question.

Scout with a quote from Sam Ehlinger on his visit:

“The experience was awesome, the atmosphere was electric, and the energy was out the roof,” Sam Ehlinger said. “I hung out with Walker Little for the whole time; the game was great, and they even had a bad quarter and still pulled it out. After the game, I had a feeling that I haven’t had since the 2006 National Championship, and that’s the feeling of Texas winning. It just feels right.”

Higdon said something about "Wolfpack 2.0 version" when asked about him hanging out with Little

Xavier Newman on his visit:

“My overall experience was great,” Xavier Newman said. “I really enjoyed myself and I had a great time and the fan base is CRAZY and at the game it was LOUD! I was feeling great and we were crunk. I was with the team and I could feel the unity and I can’t wait to be there playing. I was with Josh Thompson, Kobe Boyce and Damion Miller most of the time. I got a chance to chill with Walker Little and my thoughts are people are sleeping on Texas.”

Anthony Hines info:

Q: Hey Higs do you still expect Hines to make an official visit this weekend?

JH: No sir I do not as his father told me first thing this morning they will not take an OV to Texas this wknd, miscommunication.

follow up:

JH: He is not making an OV to Texas this weekend. I have always said he will take an OV to Texas it just won't be this weekend.

CB Kary Vincent Port Arthur, TX (Memorial) best corner in Texas 2017 IMO.

Player INFO: http://247sports.com/Player/Kary-Vincent-83670

Looking over the 247 composite recruit rankings we have a legit shot at the following 4 of the top 30 players in the country. Marvin Wilson, Walker Littler, Dylan Moses, and Baron Browning and 3 of the remaining 70 in the top 100. JK Dobbins, K'Lavon Chaisson, Anthony Hines.

If we land errbody that is listed that would be 9 top 100 players from 247 composite at the moment. The 2 remaining already committed are Carson and Ehlinger.

When Texas walked off the field after beating Notre Dame in double overtime, whispers of “Texas is back” were heard. While future play will determine whether that, the Longhorns had ample recruiting momentum before the game.

After the whirlwind finish in February that saw Charlie Strong and staff reel in a whopping six ESPN 300 prospects on signing day alone and Art Briles' dismissal at Baylor, Texas headed into the season with a positive vibe on the recruiting trail.

The momentum is at an all-time high under Strong with a number of in-state prospects who are committed to other schools, or prospects from out of state getting in touch with Texas.

Here are ten prospects Texas is involved with.

Marvin Wilson, DT, Houston/Episcopal, No. 7 in ESPN 300

Wilson attended games at both Texas A&M and Texas over the weekend. While many have this pegged as a Florida State vs. Texas battle, the five-star defensive tackle is not expected to announce a decision until signing day. USC, Texas A&M, Ohio State and LSU are also in play.

Baron Browning, OLB, Kennedale, Texas/Kennedale, No. 29

Browning is set to announce his commitment on Nov. 29 with Texas, Ohio State, Alabama and Florida State factoring in. Browning was in Austin for Sunday night's win and is expected back later in the season. An official visit to Ohio State for the Michigan game (Nov. 26) looms just three days before he announces his decision. Visits to UCLA and Florida State have also been planned.

J.K. Dobbins, RB, La Grange, Texas/La Grange, No. 39

The Ohio State verbal remains a top target for the Longhorns, and the dialogue between Dobbins and the Texas staff continues to be consistent. If Texas can’t flip Dobbins, look for the Longhorns to go after a power back.

K'Lavon Chaisson, OLB/DE, Houston/North Shore, No. 53

Texas started the summer on the outside looking in with the pass-rushing specialist, but a July visit to Austin considerably closed the gap. LSU, Texas and Houston are the three schools mentioned the most around the North Shore program. Playing outside linebacker, or a hybrid OLB/DE plays a key factor in the Under Armour All-American's recruitment.

Anthony Hines III, LB, Plano, Texas/Plano East, No. 66

ESPN Junior 300 LB Anthony Hines III will choose between 20 national powers. Miller Safrit/ESPN
Like Browning, Hines III is scheduled to announce his decision Nov. 29. The Under Armour All-American made his first official visit over the weekend to Texas A&M, and early returns are very positive. What looks to be a Texas vs. Texas A&M battle could be impacted by another visit to Ohio State.

Jalen Reagor, WR, Waxahachie, Texas/Waxahachie, No. 74

The Longhorns would love to flip the Oklahoma commit. With Reagor already flipping once, from Texas Tech to Oklahoma, there is certainly reason to keep the lines of communication open. Along with Texas, TCU is also still in hot pursuit of the Under Armour All-American.

Saiid Adebo, ATH, Mansfield, Texas/Mansfield, No. 90

The Notre Dame commit remains a top target for Strong. One of the nation's top two-way players, Adebo could play cornerback or receiver at the next level. If Texas can’t flip Adebo, Iowa cornerback commit Chevin Calloway is a name to watch closely.

Walker Little, OT, Houston/Episcopal, No. 100

The Longhorns are considered the team to beat by many for the talented tackle, but Stanford looms large with at least one more visit out west expected before a decision is made. Little will also make a trip to Florida State for the Clemson game (Oct. 29), but the Longhorns and Cardinal are far and away his top two.

Levi Jones, OLB, Austin, Texas/Westlake, No. 123

One of the mystery recruitments in the 2017 class, Jones was on hand for Texas’ big victory Sunday night. The son of former NFL linebacker Robert Jones has been very quiet on his recruitment with USC, UCLA, LSU, Texas A&M and Oklahoma receiving mention along with Texas.

Omar Manning, WR, 6-4, 332, Lancaster, Texas/Lancaster, No. 210

It's a three-team race between Texas, TCU and Oklahoma for the Dallas-area receiver with the Longhorns and Horned Frogs continuing to trade places as the leader. Manning was in Austin Sunday for the Longhorns big win, and it made a difference.

War Room:

There is no denying the 18-wheeler package has been very effective the past two seasons at Texas.

Tyrone Swoopes has found a niche by taking the snap, looking for a hole, and then running for daylight. It was a package created for Swoopes by former play-caller Jay Norvell after the starter was benched last season. Swoopes finished with 12 rushing touchdowns last season, and was a dominant force during Texas’ victory against Notre Dame on Sunday. He rushed 13 times for 53 yards and three touchdowns and was named the Big 12’s co-offensive player of the week.

Swoopes has been so productive, WalterFootball.com draft analyst Charlie Campbell reported one NFL general manager believes the quarterback will be converted into an NFL tight end, and could be selected in the fourth round of next year’s draft. If Swoopes lands on an NFL roster, it will be a huge turnaround for a quarterback who struggled for years as a passer.

One question Longhorn fans have pondered is what will happen to the Swoopes package once the senior is gone next year?

Hello, Sam Ehlinger.

From what I have been told, there have been discussions within the building about using Ehlinger like Swoopes if he does not win the starting job next season. Obviously, predicting how a player will be used 12 months out is extremely tricky. Nobody knows how the quarterback battle will play out next year. Everyone is focused on this season.

However, Ehlinger could see the field as a true freshman through the 18-wheeler package.

Ehlinger is 6-foot-1 and around 210 pounds, a number that could increase by working with Pat Moorer during the offseason. The quarterback plans to enroll in January, which is the path of most elite quarterbacks, and will have nine months to add more muscle. I was told Ehlinger is big enough to play that role next season if necessary.

When we look at next year’s quarterback room, it appears Shane Buechele, Matthew Merrick and Ehlinger will be the only guys competing in practice. Unless something changes, Jerrod Heard and Kai Locksley will continue to receive reps at receiver next year. Everybody in the building has been pleased with Heard’s transition, and they believe it is a matter of time before Locksley catches up.

Ehlinger wears No. 4 in high school, so the 18-wheeler nickname may need to change if he fills that role next year. Of course, the No 18 will be open, so that is always an option.

Regardless, the good news for Longhorn fans is there have been discussions about getting Ehlinger involved as a true freshman. (Richardson)

Last year, Texas coach Charlie Strong shared a recruiting story after his team’s season-opening loss against Notre Dame. Strong and his staff spent the offseason telling recruits about a new up-tempo offense that everyone was going to see. It was going to be fast, modern, and definitely something every player would enjoy playing in. Plus, the team was supposed to be different.

After the team fell flat, Strong did not have a good answer for recruits who were expecting a change. Obviously, he rebounded and finished with a great recruiting class, but not because of the season opener.

Once again, Strong and his staff were in the same position this year.

Everyone was told about the changes that would occur on offense with the addition of offensive coordinator Sterlin Gilbert. Several notable recruits were in attendance for the season opener against Notre Dame earlier this week. Many potential recruits watched Texas pull off an impressive win against Notre Dame. The game showed recruits that Texas may have an up-and-coming team with a very good offense, plus a defense with talented players.

So far, the recruiting impact from that game has been positive.

Texas received a verbal commitment from defensive end Taquon Graham after the biggest win of Strong’s career at Texas. Graham did not attend the game, but told Jason Suchomel the timing felt just right to make his commitment.

From what I have been told, there has been a noticeable recruiting bump behind the scenes. One source told me, “We’ve been garnering a bunch of interest from kids all over the country.” However, I was told nothing major has occurred yet (outside of Graham's commitment).

As most Longhorn fans know, Texas typically spends this time of year laying the foundation for commitments in January and February. The Longhorns will take commitments months before signing day, but the heavy lifting will not occur for several months.

That being said, a memorable win against Notre Dame has helped recruiting. (Richardson)

******

So how big was the win over Notre Dame from a recruiting perspective?

I wrote on Tuesday that the game "laid the foundation" for what could be a monster recruiting year, and I think I may have underestimated the game's impact.

In talking to a number of people this week, the reviews were nothing short of spectacular and the talk of potential recruiting impact surpassed what I was expecting to hear.

Most of the truly elite on UT's radar are smart enough that they're not going to say much, or when they do talk, they're not going to tip their hand, but every other person I spoke with felt like Texas really helped itself on Sunday night.

"I think last night woke up a lot of recruits for Texas," one person told me on Monday.

"If (the Longhorns) can keep it going, they'll be able to pick and choose just about anybody they want," another source said. "A lot of other schools (in the state) had good weekends too, but Texas is still Texas. I think the sleeping giant has officially awakened. Again." (Suchomel)

******

So let's talk about some of the individual prospects who were at the game on Sunday.

Houston Episcopal five-star OT Walker Little said he enjoyed the overall experience. That's not a bad thing and I have to think the game didsomethingto help UT's chances, but it's worth nothing that Little is a mature and intelligent young man who isn't going to rush into a decision, and he's planning to thoroughly weigh his options over the next few months.

Key quote:"It was an awesome game. We had a great time out there, got to see the players and everything. They played well last night," Little said. "It was a cool experience, a big moment for Texas. It's one of the best games I've ever been to."

So did that game, that visit, help UT's chances?

"You definitely can't make emotional decisions with such a large decision like this," Little said. "But it was definitely a big win. Hopefully it can lead to a big season for Texas."

Next up:Little will head west for an unofficial visit to Stanford when the Cardinal hosts Southern Cal (September 17).

He has only one official visit set up - for Florida State the weekend of October 29, when the Seminoles host Clemson. Little did say he plans to take additional official visits to Stanford, Ole Miss, Texas and possibly LSU.

Where Texas fits in:Little isn't tipping his hand and there's no timetable for a decision, so this one could go on for a while. I've felt for a long while that this was a Texas-Stanford race with everyone else playing catch-up, and my gut says that is still the case.

"They're definitely a top school for me still," Little said of UT. "It's a school I'll take an official to, and somewhere I could definitely see myself at."

Of note, Stanford head coach David Shaw is expected to make an appearance at Episcopal's game in Brenham on Friday. Stanford has the weekend off before playing USC next week. That visit should tell you just how big of a recruiting priority Little is for all these college coaches. (Suchomel)

I haven't talked to five-star DT Marvin Wilson directly since the game, but everything I've heard from people who talked to Wilson feel Texas helped its chances by knocking off the Fighting Irish. Makes sense. Wilson has been pretty open that he wants to see "improvement" from Texas this year in order for the Longhorns to be a serious contender for his signature. UT took a huge first step towards accomplishing that goal on Sunday, and Wilson was there front and center to see it.

A few quotes of interest from people who interacted with Wilson, Walker Little and Baron Browning either at the game or after:

"I really think (Texas has) a good chance to get Marvin."

"I really think walker is going to commit sometime. He just said he really likes it (at Texas)."

"(Browning) had a good time. I could tell he was just comfortable and everything. He was feeling it. Texas definitely has a shot. Definitely. ... I know Texas is high on his list, just because he looks up to Malik (Jefferson)."

"Baron , I definitely think he likes it, but couldn't tell if that was really the choice for him. But I know for a fact he liked it on Sunday and likes Texas a lot."

"I feel like Marvin really feels it, him and Walker. I think they really feel it. Baron, he loved the visit too." (Suchomel)

Austin Westlake LB Levi Jones has kind of flown under the radar, partly because he doesn’t do a lot of interviews. Jones, who holds a UT offer, was at the game on Sunday.

“Crazy atmosphere. It was a great game, exciting the whole way through,” Jones said.

So did the visit help UT’s chances?

“It's not that it made their chance bigger because they've always had a good chance,” Jones said. “But it just shows the special things coach Strong is doing with the program and the tone it sets for the future.”

If Texas continues its winning ways, it will be a surprise if the Longhorns aren’t a factor in this one. (Suchomel)

Back in the summer, it looked like Texas OL commitment Xavier Newman was a very strong candidate to flip his commitment to Oklahoma. More recently, Newman has firmed up his pledge, and his visit for the Notre Dame almost certainly helped UT’s chances. Even with that experience, Newman said he’s planning at least one other visit.

Key quote:"I think I'm taking one to Colorado. I’m not sure if I'm taking one to Oklahoma," Newman said.

Thoughts on the game:“I liked it. It was crazy. It was wilder than I expected. I didn't think it was going to be that crazy,” Newman said. “Basically, when the game started getting close, everyone stuck together, kept believing in each other. Everyone stayed positive.”

Newman said he got a chance to talk to the coaches before and after the game, including Charlie Strong and Matt Mattox. He’s hoping to return for another UT home game at some point this season, but doesn’t have anything locked in.

What to believe?:Newman said he still wants t to take a visit or two, but he also said last weekend’s visit has him feeling a little better about his commitment.

“It really does change things. It's like people don't know what's really going on down there,” Newman said. “We’re about to shock the world.”

Working his way back:Newman suffered an MCL injury in fall camp but started practicing this week. He’ll sit out this week, then DeSoto has a bye, before returning against Cedar Hill in three weeks. (Suchomel)

Texas DE commitment LaGaryonn Carson has been one of the Longhorns’ biggest recruiters. Carson made it in for the Notre Dame game, but he said he didn’t get to work on some of the uncommitted guys the way he was hoping.

“I didn’t get a chance to recruit the like I wanted to,” Carson said. “I hung out with some of the guys though. Me, Sam (Ehlinger) – there were a couple of us hanging out around the pool table.”

Thoughts on the game:“It was great. It was a good, hard-fought game, a nice game. The best team came out on top,” Carson said. “It was a great game. I like the way the defense started played strong. Everybody was working as a team and they came out on top.”

Solid with his decision:Early in the process, Carson mentioned that he wanted to take some other visits. He has backed off on that talk lately, and said after Sunday’s visit, he feels great about his commitment.

“I knew it was going to be a great program. That's why I signed up. I signed up to play

It was for the University of Texas. It was just going to take some time,” Carson said. (Suchomel)

Defensive back Josh Thompson was yet another UT commitment who was at the Notre Dame game. We caught up with the Nacodoches product to get his thoughts.

Key quote:I know I made the right decision. I know Texas is where I want to go,” Thompson said.

On the visit:Thompson met with the UT coaches before the game and in the locker room after UT’s victory. He said he enjoyed every minute of it.

“It was fun, just getting to meet all the recruits, trying to get people to hop on board, hanging out with the coaches, seeing how it is to be there,” Thompson said. “Basically, the coaches) were just telling me that they were glad I was there, they hope I had a good time.

Thomspson said he’s enthusiastic about what he saw from the team, particularly the future under quarterback Shane Buechele.

“Before I committed, I was talking to coach (Vance) Bedford. He was like, Texas will be good if we had good quarterbacks. Buechele stepped up a lot, really set the tone,” Thompson said. “The coaches showed they weren't selfish on who to play. (Buechele) set the tone for the whole team, him being there, showed everyone he can play.”

Up next:Along with his obvious duties playing for Nacogdoches, Thompson said his plan is to do some recruiting on the Longhorns’ behalf. He’ll return to Austin for the Baylor game.

“Basically, I just want to get through the season, try to get people to hop on board,” Thompson said. “I'll be going back to some games in the future.” (Suchomel)

****** Kobe Boyce took in is first Longhorn home game, and the UT cornerback commitment, like everyone else, loved the experience.

Key quote: "It was ridiculous,” Boyce said. “It was high intensity throughout the whole game. That was one of the best games I've ever been to.

“It was crazy. Just being with the player after the game, it was a good feeling.”

Still planning other visits:Boyce plans to take his official visit to Texas sometime after the season. He is still planning to visit OU when the Sooners host Ohio State, and he’s planning to schedule a visit to Ole Miss.

Despite those scheduled visits, Boyce did say he feels Texas has turned the corner and that makes him feel better about his commitment.

“Just seeing how they've been paying, I feel like they're back, honestly,” Boyce said. “I knew that. That's why I committed. Now seeing it, it really helps my commitment.”

One final note of interest:Boyce was telling me that he and the other commitments have a group chat and they stay in touch that way. If you remember, last year’s class also had a group text, but that one included the uncommitted players, and it played a big part in landing some of the Horns’ top targets.

“I’ve been reaching out to (the commitments) basically every day,” Boyce said.

Any uncommitted players on this year’s chat?

“Not yet. I need to get that expanded,” Boyce said. (Suchomel)

A quick update on new UT offer, five-star OL Alex Leatherwood

I haven’t communicated with Leatherwood directly, but did talk to a couple people with knowledge of his recruitment.

An Alabama commitment out of Pensacola (FL) Washington, one person told me Leatherwood plans to take all five of his visits. If that’s true, Texas would seem to have a good shot at getting Leatherwood on campus. That same person said he thinks it’s unlikely Leatherwood signs anywhere but Alabama.

A second person agreed that Leatherwood would likely stick with Bama, but didn’t rule out anything if Texas can get him on campus. “I think he’ll stay. He just likes the attention,” this person said. (Suchomel)

Calling it now that UT has a top 4 class. I want to say top 3 but need to see how the season plays out.

As to Ellinger playing the 18 wheeler package, you can always run Foreman in the wildcat. I think he has the perfect size/speed/moves for the wildcat that was so successful when Fozzy ran it. I don't think I'd risk the extra hits to Ellinger in that situation. The main thing the 18 wheeler or wildcat gives you is an extra blocker in the backfield. It's really hard to stop unless your DLine can get a push and allow the LBs a free path to the ball carrier. If your OLine does it's job, it's very hard to stop.

Maybe Heard can run it too.
