With the high school season beginning this weekend and the Longhorns preparing for their own big-time opener against Notre Dame next Sunday, the focus for the players and UT coaches is on getting themselves and their team ready for live action. As such, there hasn't been a ton of earth-shattering recruiting developments over the past few weeks. To change things up, we checked with some different people connected to a number of the Longhorns' top out-of-state recruiting targets to get the latest and see where UT stands.
IMG Academy (Fl.) LB Dylan Moses - Moses has slipped a bit in the Rivals.com rankings (he's now just outside five-star status) but he's still one of the country's hottest prospects. He'll take an official visit to Texas the weekend of October 14, when the Longhorns host Iowa State (yawn). His other official visits are set for Alabama, Miami, UCLA and Ohio State.
Source who covers IMG Academy says:"I still think LSU is the team to beat for him. I think Texas has a fighting chance. I think he'll leave. I don't really think the Florida schools have a chance. It will be an SEC/Texas battle. Ole Miss in there a little too, but I think LSU is the team to beat."
My thoughts:A couple things to consider here ... Moses has been on the UT campus a couple times already, but getting him in for an official visit is huge. And, he and his father are both huge fans of the UT coaching staff. Those are the positives.
Moses got all Longhorn fans excited when he listed Texas as his leader following a visit in early April, but I never quite bought into that declaration. I still don't. Moses is from Louisiana originally and was a long-time LSU commitment before opening things up. I still think this one swings back to LSU (barring something happening with Les Miles) with Alabama the second most likely landing spot. The Longhorns certainly have a chance because of Moses' feelings towards the UT coaches, but Texas may have to catch lightning in a bottle during his official visit for this one to work out.
Lakeland (Fl.) RB A.J. Davis - He was an early offer for Texas, but things have been pretty quiet between Davis and the Longhorns (more on that in a second). Davis has a ton of offers but isn't what I'd call proactive with the recruiting process. He doesn't talk much and has yet to set up any official visits.
State of Florida recruiting source says:"I think Texas can get him if they press. They're in a good situation. This area is loaded with running backs. Florida got theirs (Adarius Lemons). Florida State got theirs (Khalan Laborn and Zaquandre White). Miami is not really pressing him. So there's a good chance for regional schools to get in. I think Texas can definitely be involved there. Oklahoma is involved there. Texas definitely has a shot if they press him."
My thoughts:When I talked to Davis recently, he said he would like to hear more from the Longhorns, but here's the kicker ... Texas has reached out, but Davis can be damn near impossible to track down. Assuming the lines of communication open up during the fall, there's a very good chance Davis will come into Austin for a visit, if that's the route the coaches want to go. La Grange's J.K. Dobbins is UT's top RB target despite his commitment to Ohio State, but Davis is a heck of a player in his own right and Texas has a legitimate chance in this one based on my conversations with Davis.
Montgomery (Ala.) Jefferson Davis DE Alec Jackson - He's rated as only a three-star prospect, but Jackson's offer list would suggest that he deserves consideration for a higher standing. The 6-4, 238-pounder made his way to Austin for the Under the Lights camp in July, so there is a legitimate interest in Texas. That being said, Davis was very noncommittal about leaders or official visits when we talked to him last month.
Source says: "He's one I think Texas has a shot with. He doesn't talk about recruiting a ton, but the last time he and I spoke, he mentioned Texas a lot. He's definitely in play. He likes the schools in his region, but they aren't pressing that hard. His recruitment could change if schools start working down the stretch but right now Texas is definitely in there."
My thoughts: Basically, I agree with the take above. Texas is one of several schools that has a legitimate shot in this one. It will all come down to an official visit ... if UT can get him back on campus, the Longhorns should move into the lead pack. If not, no chance.
Mobile (Al) St. Paul's DE Ryan Johnson - A fairly recent UT offer that came in earlier this month, Johnson doesn't say much so it's tough to get a good read on him. He does have a pretty ridiculous list of scholarship offers, including all the top dogs in the Southeast, so it's probably going to be tough to get him out of that region.
Source who covers his school:"A lot of people like him. It's tough to pull highly-ranked kids out of Alabama if Auburn or Bama wants them. If you look through history, it doesn't happen very often. I think Auburn was his first offer and they still like him, so they may be the team to beat. But sometimes they maybe a kid for granted, have other kids higher, maybe Texas can sneak in there. But I think Auburn is the team to beat. Stanford is lurking a little bit."
My thoughts:Any time a top prospect in the state of Alabama has an offer from both Alabama and Auburn, I'm a bit skeptical of UT's chances. I do think Johnson does have some genuine level of interest in Texas, but this is going to be a tough pull. (Suchomel)

Hutto defensive end Ondario Robinson, who holds a UT offer, was planning to commit on the day of his team's opener against Bryan (this Friday).
Robinson has been pretty open about A&M being his leader and the thought by a couple sources close to the Aggie football program was that Robinson was all set to commit to A&M this week. Not just yet ...
Robinson has decided to postpone his commitment, and one person we talked to this week said he is expected to attend the Longhorns' home-opener against Notre Dame. This one is still leaning A&M's way, but if Texas can put on a good showing next weekend the scales could tip back UT's way. (Suchomel)

Top offensive lineman Chuck Filiaga made the move from California to Aledo (TX) this summer. One person we talked to this week, who is dialed in to Filiaga's recruitment, thinks it's most likely Filiaga returns to Cali for college ball, but said the Longhorns are still very much in the picture for the Rivals250 member.
"The latest I know, it's really going to come down to whether he wants to stay in Texas. A lot of people think he wants to come back to California, but he's so undecided if he wants to come back, stay in Texas or go to the SEC," the source said. "That's why I think Texas, even an Ole Miss, LSU, Bama, OU and A&M are still piquing his interest. I think through his senior season, he'll figure out if he likes it in Texas or wants to go back (to Cali). My gut tells me he probably wants to come back. I asked him one time if he's staying or coming back. He said 'Hah, I'm not staying there.' But that was before he ever went (to Texas), so that could change. I sense he will take his visits, then go from there, but I think USC is the team to beat right now." (Suchomel)
