Recruiting Thread 2017

SpursTalk:

A few notes on the team meeting from Inside Texas...

-this will be hardest offseason of their lives, they'll be mentally and physically the toughest they've ever been.

-Herman called out a few guys for slouching in their chairs, every player will be drug-tested when they return to Austin from Christmas break.

-if anyone tests positive for marijuana, or other drugs, they'll be called out in front of the team and essentially verbally ripped to shreds.

-nobody can leave Austin without clearing it with Herman.

-while the players were initially shocked, almost everyone shook Herman's hand afterwards.

I don't have confirmation but being reported on another site that Barron Browning has decided to push his announcement back because he isn't ready.

word is he is taking a hard look at Texas again.

I don't have confirmation but being reported on another site that Barron Browning has decided to push his announcement back because he isn't ready.

word is he is taking a hard look at Texas again.

Tim Brewster was recruiting him to Florida St. Could get interesting.

Staff is hitting the ground running.

Per Inside Texas, UT will see RB Eno Benjamin of Wylie East today. Several CBs for him to UT on 247. Herman did offer while at Houston.

Also from Inside Texas, LB Baron Browning may be pushing his announcement date back even though he hasn't heard from Texas yet. He was supposed to be committing today, but they think Texas is still the place he really wants to be.

OrangeBloods saying LB Anthony Hines has pushed his commitment back to Friday, but it's probably not Texas related.

Per 24/7, Herman will have in-home visits with CB Kobe Boyce and CB Josh Thompson today.

Per HD, Coach Giles made an in home visit last night with DE Taquon Graham of Temple. DE Taquon Graham after meeting with Coach Giles earlier this evening (Scout): "Giles is that man, I'm ready to come in and play."

Per Scout, the Texas staff is trying very hard to get an in-home visit with RB JK Dobbins of La Grange.

Jarrett Stidham to Auburn seems likely and gives his tweet more meaning. Kendal Briles on the way there to interview for recently vacated OC position.

Rhett Lashlee has left Auburn, per Auburn247. According to their mods, this puts them out of the race for Jarrett Stidham unless his replacement is Kendal Briles.

Per Hamm, Kendall Briles was in route to Auburn.

Stidham is visiting Auburn again today.

the initial honeymoon will be interesting but lets see if the momentum carries till signing day. Either way, I think we will be very happy with this class.

Picking up a quality back would be a good addition. Strong seemed to be Dobbins or nothing with nothing being most likely. With Foreman gone and Warren injury prone another quality guy there could do some good. Porter never really popped to me, so if we have to rely on him I think it will be a big step back in the running game.

Benjamin is probably in, Levi Jones was a silent, but they fired his black coach so he's out. Chaisson is in.

A big back saw what foreman could do. I think that alone is a big enough carrot to dangle in front of a top back.

Eno Benjamin: In less than a week of Tom Herman being the Texas HC, we have more movement when it comes to RB recruiting than we’ve seen in the last 6 months of Charlie Strong’s tenure. Wylie East (TX) RB Eno Benjamin is receiving a close look by Herman and his staff. Benjamin told me OL coach Derek Warehime reached out to him yesterday to express the new staff’s interest in him. I was also told that Warehime will be in area to visit Benjamin today, and a possible offer could be extended. I would expect a Texas offer would put the Longhorns at the top of his list. I’ve said multiple times that I’m not sold on Benjamin’s speed at the next level, but that there isn’t a thing a RB does that he doesn’t do very well. He may not pop off the screen like a JK Dobbins has, but he’s solid all-around back that get’s the job done.

Benjamin held an offer from Herman when he was at Houston, so the they are familiar with his game. Right now Benjamin plans to commit on January 7th at the US Army All-American Game. I’m not sure if that would change if Texas offers. Benjamin is close with Texas commits Kobe Boyce, Josh Thompson, and Sam Ehlinger. He’s very well liked and respected by other recruits in the DFW area as well, and he’s not a bad guy to help recruit for the team he’s committed to. Heck, he got five other recruits from the state of Texas to commit to Iowa with him. That’s pretty impressive if you ask me. But this is someone that we will continue to keep an eye on if an offer is extended. – (Andrew)

Timarcus Davis: If you’re looking for a current Houston commit that could, and in my opinion absolutely should, get a look from the new Texas staff, look no further than 2017 CB Timarcus Davis (College Station, TX).

Davis mother tells me that new DB coach, Jason Washington, has reached out to let them know he will make an in-home visit with Davis this upcoming Friday.

Davis was unable to play his senior year due to an ACL tear but I love his junior film. He is perhaps the most explosive cornerback in Texas. Some of you may have seen that Davis jumped nearly 46 inches at the Nike SPARQ combine in Houston!

Davis will need to add some weight but that is no different than most high school defensive backs. Davis’ explosion and COD is just too impressive to pass up in my opinion. There’s a play on his junior film (which is now set to private) where he defends a double move and is never once stacked through the route. It’s some Jason Verrett type stuff. Amazed me. I had long hoped coach Strong would offer him. Perhaps Tom Herman will do so…again. – (Super K)

– Team News | D’Onta Foreman: A source confirmed that after his visit with new head coach, Tom Herman, Texas RB, D’Onta Foreman has decided to enter the 2017 NFL draft. I’m told an announcement could come as soon as tomorrow.

Interestingly, I was not at all given the impression that Herman attempted to pressure Foreman into staying. In fact, I was told that instead of recruiting Foreman to stay, Herman actually told Foreman that he has proved enough at the collegiate level and that entering the draft this year could ultimately be in his best interest. – (Super K)

Walker Little: New Texas OL coach, Derek Warehime has wasted not time making Walker Little a priority. I was told he called Little yesterday and they got to chat for a little bit before Little hosted Ole Miss’ OL coach for an in-home visit. I was told that Warehime currently has an in-home visit set up with Little for Thursday. I reported over a week ago that Little plans to officially visit Texas in January after the early enrolles are moved in so QB Sam Ehlinger can be Little’s host on that visit. As of last night, that remains the plan. – (Andrew)

Baron Browning: Kennedale (TX) 5-star OLB Baron Browning dropped some news last night.

Texas did not make his recently released top six list. Some Texas fans took this news as a major positive, but I wouldn’t go that far right now. After talking to some people it still sounds like this is an Alabama-Ohio State battle. People on the Ohio State side felt like they knocked Browning’s official visit out of the park and it seemed like going into that visit he was Alabama bound, and maybe things changed which is why he pushed his decision back.

People on the Alabama side feel good because I was told they feel if Browning’s Ohio State visit was that great, why would he not just commit to the Buckeyes tomorrow? They feel like letting the post visit high wear off will help them out. I was also told their is some cautious optimism on the TCU side of things after the news of Browning pushing his decision back dropped.

Perhaps the new staff can make a quick move but until I see the Texas staff visit Browning, and see the 5-star OLB back in Austin for a visit I still think it’s an Alabama-Ohio State battle for him. – (Andrew)

Benjamin is probably in, Levi Jones was a silent, but they fired his black coach so he's out. Chaisson is in.

Would be interesting to know who our "silent 's" were before the Charlie fall out.. my guess it would include Browning & Wilson, maybe another 5* or two.

I doubt Charlie had 4 5star silent commits. We weren't even in Browning latest release of schools he is considering. I get that Charlie was a closer, but players that don't have you in their top 5 probably aren't silent commits.

Yeah so he wasn't a silent commit if he was waiting to see if Charlie would fail. Not that I fully understand the concept of silent commits, but from what I do would be the a player is ready to commit but coach tells you not to announce yet so you announce later to maximize momentum and buzz. I doubt Charlie had very many of these players this year.

from spurs
Stidham = He should have three since the JUCO he enrolled at for the fall semester doesn't have football.

He's headed to Auburn today and I feel like that's where he ultimately lands.

There have been rumors for months that Stidham and Briles' son, Kendal, would be a package deal to Auburn and their current OC, Lashlee, looks to be out the door

As I understand things, there were 3, two are out and 1 will stick.

Levi Jones was one of them, he's out.

Per TFB:

Grant Polley: Yesterday, Texas offensive line coach, Derek Warehime, offered 2017 OT and Colorado commit Grant Polley (Denton, TX).

I checked with someone close to Polley and was told that the family is very happy with his commitment to Colorado but will sit down as a family and discuss what the Texas offer means and whether a visit to Austin will take place. – (Super K)

Jason Washington in Dallas: New Texas DB coach, Jason Washington was in Dallas yesterday. He stopped by Bishop Dunne to see 2017 CB, Chevin Calloway. While there I’m told by a Dunne coach that he offered two prospects, 2018 DT Calvin Avery and 2019 DB, Brian Williams.

Dunne coach also mentioned that he expects an offer to be coming for 2019 ATH, Marquez Beason.

In RE Calloway, I hope to get a better sense of where things stand with him and how many DBs Washington hopes to bring in later this week. – (Super K)

Defensive Lineman: I spoke to a source yesterday who said that despite the fact that Strong brought in quite a few defensive linemen last year, the staff is looking for DTs and DEs for this 2017 class. I’m told they are looking for some taller, longer rush DEs (in the 6’4 range). Keep your eye on K’Lavon Chaisson (Houston, TX). – (Super K)

Tyrese Robinson: Am told that OL coach, Warehime was expected to stop by and visit, 2017 OL and OU commit, Tyrese Robinson (McKinney, TX). However, we are told that Robinson is solid to the Sooners.

Brenden Jaimes: I briefly caught up with the father of 2017 OL and Nebraska commit, Brenden Jaimes (Austin, TX) and am told that coach Warehime is expected to see Jaimes this Friday.

Marvin Wilson: It’s no surprise that the staff is recruiting 2017 DT, Marvin Wilson. I spoke with a source close to Wilson and was told that this will be, as expected, an uphill battle for the talented lineman. The word is he was quite close to coach Strong and that Texas’ chances with Wilson significantly diminished when Strong was let go. – (Super K)

Scout also saying Oscar Giles had an in home visit last night with 5 star LB Anthony Hines. HD reporting that the visit was interesting and went very well.

Here's a list of all EE Texas has offered:
  • Sam Ehlinger (QB)
  • JK Dobbins (RB)
  • Alex Leatherwood (OL)
  • Adrian Ealy (OL)
  • Will Farrar (OL)
  • Robert Beal (DE)
  • Anthony Hines (LB)
  • Baron Browning (LB)
  • Dylan Moses (LB)
  • Kenneth Murray (LB)
  • Kobe Boyce (CB)
  • Jeffrey Okudah (DB)

24/7 (Burton) thinks that Stan Drayton is in line to possibly be the next Co-OC and RB coach. Recruited Zeke to Ohio St and Cam to Florida under Coach Meyer. He's currently the RB coach for Chicago Bears.

WR Charleston Rambo (Cedar Hill)

Any idea the level of Charleston Rambo's interest in us?
There's always been interest, rumor is there are some very pro UT people in his corner. I think most of that pro UT was due to Strong. However, Herman was recruiting Rambo to UH so there's that previous relationship as well.

Dylan Moses tweeted out a cryptic message about making decisions and recruiting. Could mean he possibly flips back to LSU if Bama lands Browning. Interesting note is that Moses was very high on UH and Herman. Doubt he comes to UT but if Herman reaches out and gets him on campus watch out.

Upon Foreman declaring for the draft, it appears the No. 1 JUCO FB/RB would like to speak to Mr. Herman.

Let's see if there is any smoke to hiring his coach.
Hearing Aggy is reaching out to Joey to gauge his interest in leaving The CHill. Could have a war between UT and aggy for his services. If he wants into the college ranks he is a must get. Dude is legit.

The staff will be seeing aggy commit OL Grayson Reed of Cypress Creek today, according to 24/7.

reporting UT coaches were in College Station yesterday to see Houston commitment, CB Timarcus Davis. No offer or in-home visit, but he thinks it may happen later on. 46-inch vertical.

Per 24/7, the following Houston commitments are receiving visits from the staff today:

Inside Texas reporting QB Sam Ehlinger has broken his wrist and won't be playing against Lake Travis this weekend. His high school career is over.

Burton Thursday recruiting update:

Horns247 has learned that Tom Herman has not retained Mike Giglio. Giglio was Charlie Strong's director of player personnel and headed up the staff's recruiting efforts.

Brought to Texas from Louisville by Strong, Giglio was a great addition to the Texas staff and brought with him a level of detailed evaluation that allowed Texas to sign some lower-ranked recruits that other premier programs passed on, including Zach Shackelford, Malcolm Roach and Gerald Wilbon from last season alone.

Giglio also showed a keen eye for strategy, one that probably slipped by even the most astute observers.

Last year, we all witnessed Texas going heavy into Louisiana for defensive linemen. The Horns came away with the mother lode (Roach, Wilbon and D'Andre Christmas).

But that didn't just happen by coincidence. It was a year's worth of preparation and analysis put into action.

Giglio told me that he and his personnel staff felt after looking at all in-state prospects that there simply weren't enough big d-linemen in the state of Texas last year, and they knew Louisiana was loaded. They also knew LSU couldn't take them all. So the Horns went hard into Louisiana last year.

If It were a one-time thing, I think Giglio may have been trying to take credit for something that happened naturally and not by design.

And as we all know, the Horns weren't doing nearly as much in Louisiana this year. That too was by design.

Instead, the Horns had targeted the state of Alabama for a few key DL prospects. The thinking there goes that the state of Alabama has several top-notch players and Alabama simply wouldn't take them all. Texas was actively recruiting three Alabama DLs and was likely to get visits from at least two of them prior to Strong's dismissal.

It remains to be seen if Texas continues recruiting those players from Alabama this campaign.

But with the coaching change, Giglio is out.

His replacement Derek Chang, a 2004 UT grad, seems similarly detailed and appears to carry a similar approach to Giglio. Those commonalities aren't happenstance.

Chang and Giglio both worked under Ohio State personnel director Mark Pantoni. Giglio did so while he and Pantoni were at Florida together, Chang at Ohio State before going to Houston to lead his own group there.

I've asked others who have worked with Chang in the past to describe him and the words "really bright" came up more than once. So did the phrase "hard worker".

It appears Chang is already off and running at Texas because the new Texas coaches appear to be off and running as well. And that's his job. Chang's responsibility is to get the coaches in front of the right players and make sure their schedules follow what the head coach wants.

It's working so far IMO. Incredibly well.

It's been less than a week since Herman even took the job, yet Texas seems to be engaging with nearly every recruit the old staff was, while also spreading their wings to include players Houston had been recruiting, too.

It's clear that the new Horns coaching staff was prepared to hit the ground running. Hats off to Herman, Chang, and whoever else put in the work to make that happen.

**

I want to add this.

I have the utmost respect for the recruiting work Giglio and the former Texas coaching staff did. The Texas roster looks like it's way better off now than when they arrived in Austin, of that I think we can all agree.

So I wish Giglio nothing but the best in the future. I'm sure he has a bright one ahead of him.

And we wish Derek Chang the best as he moves into the same role and puts his own stamp on it.

**

So far, the Longhorns have made three offers for the class of 2017 that the previous staff had not.

- WR Charleston Rambo, Cedar Hill (committed to OU)
- OL Grant Polley, Denton (committed to Colorado)
- CB Kendall Sheffield, Blinn JC/Fort Bend Marshall

Houston had already received a visit from Sheffield earlier in the recruiting process. Rambo and Polley were prospects the Cougars always liked but just couldn't land.

The new Texas coaches are also reaching out to some players who committed to Houston. As yet, none of those players have received a scholarship offer. But I think we can expect some of those to come in due time, especially if neither Major Applewhite or Todd Orlando get the head coaching position in Houston.

**

With the departure of D'Onta Foreman to the NFL and Tristian Houston transferring, the Horns are in pursuit of at least one RB in this recruiting class. La Grange RB J.K. Dobbins was a priority for the previous staff but stopped communicating with them more than a month ago.

The new staff is also reaching out to Dobbins. But there are three other legit possibilities that have surfaced this week.

- Toneil Carter, Langham Creek (committed to Georgia)
- Daniel Young, Spring Westfield (committed to Houston)
- Eno Benjamin, Wylie East

The previous Texas staff had not offered Young or Benjamin. The former staff attempted to recruit Carter but never really got anywhere with him.

Eric Nahlin
Recruiting Editor:

New
We discussed the push for NSD here, and dropped it late at night intentionally. It went over about as well as closing the bar an hour early. That post kind of had the feeling of shift change, with the B-team replacing the stalwarts. But like with beautiful women in this state, it's a deep talent pool and if you play the game right, you're going to end up faring quite well.

If you want to be exceedingly optimistic, we're going to see Nash's Equilibrium in play with some prospects. Rather than going head to head with Ohio State, LSU, Alabama, etc., we'll see Texas try and take from OU, TCU, and others like them. It's not ideal, especially to the hardcore recruiting fan who have been thirsting for a class with Baron Browning and Jeffrey Okudah, but UT will do just fine.

I was going to write a post with targets UT should hone in on, and then the staff started beating me to it with interest in Eno Benjamin and an offer to Charleston Rambo.

NUMBERS BY POSITION

This is something many have been asking about, and many predicted correctly. The intent is to go big, by going small, and not diluting class baseline talent level. The staff wisely observes it's behind for many of the truly elite players, so will take the best ballers it can while still filling class needs. I must say, they're still aiming high as you're about to read.

QB: 2
Committed: Sam Ehlinger
Targets: Bryson Smith, Kyle Allen

Let me first say that we continually hear Allen is not coming to Texas. He doesn't graduate until May so could that change? Of course, especially if an injury occurs in Spring. I mostly added him here because we'll be asked about him. As of now, the plan is not for him to join the team.

We've long mentioned Smith might join Herman and that certainly hasn't changed. The staff loves the duality he brings, not just to the position, but to the roster. If quarterback didn't work out, he'd be a receiver. That's a boon in what will be a small class.

RB: 2
Committed: N/A
Targets: JK Dobbins, Toneil Carter, Eno Benjamin

As we previously wrote, JK was visited earlier in the week. That's an uphill battle but one worth entertaining. He's a huge priority for the staff and this one won't end without at least a Herman in-home. He was told before the announcement that Foreman was leaving so the staff is playing all the angles. Off-line I'll go into how bad the previous staff messed this recruitment up. It's embarrassing.

We also previously wrote that Toneil Carter wanted to hear from the staff. Things were so bad with the previous staff, Carter wasn't even sure if he had an offer. Texas will be by to see him today. Interest is genuine, but he has sent in his non-binding financial aid agreement.

My dude, your dude, our dude, Eno. A Malik personality at a position where they're rare (JK's like that too, though), Eno should be visited either today or tomorrow. We expect an offer and we expect him to give the staff good indication he'll be a Longhorn. He's slated to announce at the Army All-American game and that will be great publicity for the country to see that big smile don a Longhorn hat. Assuming it goes that way of course. Current commits are working on Eno hard, and we expect Eno to start recruiting for Texas before he actually commits.

The staff will press hard for JK and Toneil and try and take one. All three are early enrollees.

WR: 2-3
Committed: Damion Miller
Targets: Charleston Rambo, Jalen Reagor, Mannie Netherly, RJ Sneed

We feel very confident Rambo can be flipped with an enthusiastic push from the staff, but it's hard to expect immediate movement with no coordinator or position coach in place.

The Reagor's were contacted yesterday and that's a great sign. We posit you'll see Reagor visit at some point.

LSU commit Netherly will be visited today by Derek Warehime. We felt he was UT's to lose before the team added Devin Duvernay last Summer. If the staff really wants him Ehlinger will be a great help.

Sneed was committed to TCU, then had his offer pulled after visiting Ole Miss. He subsequently committed to Ole Miss. This is house money for Texas because they can flip him rather late if they wish.

So again, we see clearly defined targets and a good chance to make some hay. Texas is in great shape at receiver.

OL: 2
Committed: N/A
Targets: Walker Little, Grant Polley

Some will lament two isn't enough but the last two classes should mitigate that fear.

Little will get an in-home with Derek Warehime tonight. I've heard great feedback on Warehime as a recruiter and his previous haul at Houston was very good considering where he was coaching. He was beating P5 schools on the regular. I feel decently confident the staff can win Little over, and I feel really confident he truly wants to attend Texas.

Like I always say, if you go small at a position in a class, go versatile and that's what Grant Polley brings. He can play up and down the line in spot duty before finding his true home. With his lack of height, but great feet, a Trey Hopkins comparison isn't all that far off. He's committed to Colorado and a big foundational piece of that class so this won't be a cut-and-dried flip.

Interestingly I've heard the staff prefers Polley to former Longhorn commit, and current Colorado commit, Xavier Newman.

TE: 1
Committed: N/A
Targets: Brock Wright, Chase Rogers (?)

Things are a bit murky here. They've been by to see Wright but the feedback was wrong. The staff will be stubborn here and continue until it's officially over for the early enrollee. With uncertainty at Notre Dame that's not a terrible plan, but Wright would scrub the dome on the main building harness-free and with a toothbrush.

Chase Rogers is just a guess based on the UofH staff's pursuit of New Jersey's Devin Miller. I didn't like Rogers for the previous offense but he looks a good fit for this one. He's a Mississippi native who visited for the West Virginia game and I believe he could be had. Since he's similar to Miller he should at least get a call.

DL: 2-3
Committed: Taquon Graham (they're thinking there's no way L.Carson qualifies)
Targets: K'Lavon Chaisson, Marvin Wilson

Like with offensive line, the huge 2016 class gives the staff some latitude here. This isn't the time to reach and the staff won't need to. Thank you, Charlie Strong (seriously).

Graham is "committed" but needs to be recruited like he's not and Oscar Giles is on the case. Texas should be good here because of Graham's in-house recruiter he refers to as 'Mom'. She has to be won over to a degree but she doesn't want him anywhere else.

Texas feels good about Chaisson but his relationship with Wilson could make things a bit interesting.

As of now we feel Wilson will pick LSU but others are still in it like Ohio State, FSU, and USC. Winning over Chaisson and Little are steps one and two to pulling the late steal for Wilson. They'll stay on him until the end and since he's deciding on NSD, Herman has a lot of time to make-up ground.

LB: 1-2
Committed: N/A
Targets: Anthony Hines, Marqez Bimage

Hines was visited earlier in the week and gave positive feedback, though Hines is a pro at politicking that sort of thing. There are some reports that he'll pick A&M this weekend but I just don't see it. I could be wrong because Hines is a very tough read, even for the schools recruiting him. TCU source, "no clue what he's going to do, Baron to OSU, though, probably." I think if Hines wasn't a football player and was picking an in-state school it would be Texas. We'll see. I can't rule out any outcome.

Bimage has one of the most interesting recruitments going. He's still committed to UofH but he's not going there. He's staying committed to the school as a good faith gesture. They don't want the bad publicity and he'll oblige them. He was visited by Craig Naivar on Monday and Jason Washington on Wednesday. No Texas offer was extended but he's on the very short list. If Malcolm Roach and Erick Fowler were spliced you'd get something like Bimage. He could be an ILB or hybrid-end. Again, versatility in a small class. I have a strong suspicion he ends up a Longhorn. Before you piss and moan about star-ratings role tape.

DB: 4
Committed: Montrell Estell, Josh Thompson, Kobe Boyce
Targets: Kendall Sheffield, Chevin Calloway

Jason Washington likes to use his DB's and Houston often found itself in dime. That's a big selling point to any DB he recruits.

The Juco Sheffield was offered yesterday. Thought to be heading to A&M or OSU, Tom Herman is trying to throw a wrench into those plans. Because of the Sheffield's relationship with Herman, I think they'll at least visit, but no visit is planned at this time. Flashback: After Malik Jefferson committed to Texas, Sheffield's interest was renewed in UT. Texas did well in that DB class and Sheffield never got the call. He could have picked A&M the first time, and didn't. You may recall I was way ahead on him ending up at Alabama. I have a decent feeling UT will make considerable noise and make this a three-way race. Looks like the UT class of 2015 gets to don it's recruiting cap once more.

Sheffield is the #1 DB on the board for Texas.

Calloway was visited on Tuesday by Texas and they'll push for him but they'll only take one of he and Sheffield.

Talk is the staff is really high on the DB's currently in place.

Final tally: There's some flexibility in the numbers but the staff doesn't want to go above 18 and would prefer 17.

This isn't a comprehensive list of who they'll target, but these are the key targets as far as I know.

OTHER NOTES

- Don't expect many visitors this weekend. We actually don't know of any I just would be surprised if nobody made it to campus.

- The coaches will use this weekend to brainstorm and discuss what they learned this week on the road. It's controlled and measured when you'd think they might want half of the state to visit. I dig it.

- They'll try and generate momentum coming out of the dead period turn leading up to a big weekend on January 21st. Great plan, as that helps you get your bearings, find out where you are that weekend, and then scramble the following week and weekend if you need to.

- I'm getting great feedback on the staff in general. One DC at a Dallas talent factory states Herman's the best recruiter he's seen in his 30+ years of coaching. Coaches are happy to see that big smile of Oscar Giles' making the rounds again in his Texas gear. There are three degrees of separation from Jason Washington -- he knows everyone and is known to be a great man and good coach. And finally, Derek Warehime seems like a volume recruiter which isn't always the case with OL coaches. They often just recruit their own.

- Expect nearly the whole football staff at Texas, even coaches who aren't retained in that capacity could find themselves in a support role.

It's all hands on deck right now, and once you get beyond the Baron Browning news, things are pretty bright.

Per TFB:

Staff On The Road: As I tweeted yesterday, while tom Herman only has 4 assistants right now those guys have been all over the place. On Tuesday most were in the DFW area, yesterday they were out East, and today they’ll be in Houston led by Corby Meekins and his Strong H-Town ties. The staff has already been by to see Marvin Wilson, Walker Little, and Grayson Reed this morning. We’ll add updates as they see more.

Kendall Sheffield: In case you missed it, Texas has offered former Alabama CB, Kendall Sheffield (Blinn JUCO):

We are checking with a source in order to determine whether a visit to Texas may happen. – (TFB)

Tim Brewster: Since Tom Herman was hired there has been talk that Florida State Recruiting coordinator/TE coach could head back to Texas and join Herman’s staff. Each day that passes makes it seem like that may not happen. Brewster recruits Texas for Florida State and has done so with a lot of success. He recently conducted some in-home visits with 5-star DT Marvin Wilson and OT Walker Little. I was interested to hear if Brewster’s job at FSU/Texas came up and was told, “Tim Brewster said he is definitely NOT leaving FSU.”

I will say though, if you think predicting where a recruit will end up is hard, predicting coaching changes is even harder. – (Andrew)

Walker Little: Coach Warehime will conduct his in-home visit with 5-star OT, Walker Little this evening. It’s been a busy week for Little as Stanford, Ole Miss, and Florida State have already done some in-home visits.

Mannie Netherly: Crosby (TX) LSU WR commit Mannie Netherly will be visited by Texas TE coach Corby Meekins tomorrow. Even with the departure of Charlie Strong, Netherly still has a solid amount of interest in the Longhorns. Since Netherly is an early enrollee, HC Tom Herman will use his one in-home visit with the talented WR next week. Also, as the dead period approaches (December 12th – January 11th) there are only two more weekends for Netherly to take visits. It sounds like Texas will get the final shot at Netherly, as he told me he plans to visit Texas on the weekend before the dead period.

Netherly has stayed solid to LSU throughout all the madness and that may not change, but Texas will get a shot to change that. If Texas keeps WR commit Damion Miller in the fold, it’s likely that Texas only takes one more 2o17 WR. – (Andrew)

First Official Visit Weekend: It’s looking like the first weekend Tom Herman will host official visitors at Texas will be the weekend of Decemeber 9th – 11th, as it doesn’t look like they will host any official visitors this weekend. As I noted above, Netherly will be in town. QB commit Sam Ehlinger will be taking his official visit as well. Any other commit/recruit that is going to enroll early will be with them that weekend as well. – (Andrew)

War room

It's been such an active week in recruiting for the Longhorns, it's been pretty tough to keep up. What a refreshing change after things had basically been on hold for nearly three full months.

Simply put, this new staff is ... Getting. After. It.

Even Tom Herman himself hit the road this week, with the new UT front man making a couple stops in the Central Texas area on Thursday, including visits to Elgin and Rockdale (Rockdale is home to top 2018 ATH Jaquayln Crawford, who already holds a bunch of early offers, including one from Houston when Herman was there).

Let's jump right in with some of the notes we've heard this week ...

--- Texas picked up its interest in Langham Creek RB Toneil Carter, who has been committed to Georgia since mid-summer.

I spoke with a couple sources on this one (Carter doesn't talk much) and one person close to Carter said he expects Texas to do an in-home next week. Keep an eye on this one ... I'm hearing Carter's interest is legit and he has some people close to him that are in favor of him flipping to Texas.

"I really like coach Herman and Meekins, therefore I'm trying to get (him) over there," the source said.

--- Plano East LB Anthony Hines is scheduled to commit on Friday at noon. Texas assistant coach Oscar Giles did do an in-home this week. Ohio State, TCU and Florida were supposed to go in on Thursday. Kevin Sumlin and A&M were in-home on Sunday.

As of Thursday night, nobody I've talked to has a really clear indicator on where Hines will wind up. A buddy of mine has talked to sources on about five different sides of this thing, and there's no real consensus but everyone agrees that most of the signs point to A&M.

Texas made one last push, but it would be a shock to everyone if the Longhorns won out.

--- Texas extended an offer to Blinn C.C. Kendall Sheffield on Wednesday after assistant Jason Washington paid Sheffield a visit at his school.

A&M and Ohio State are believed to be the leaders for Sheffield. He's already visited OSU, will be at TCU this weekend and Texas A&M on December 9. Sheffield's dad tells me it's too early to tell if Texas will get a visit, which isn't a no, so the Longhorns do have a puncher's chance.

The depth chart will be something Texas will have to overcome ... one of Ohio State's big selling points is that both its starting corners could be leaving for the NFL draft.

--- Texas assistant coach Jason Washington went to Port Arthur Memorial to see LSU DB commitment Kary Vincent on Thursday. I've heard Tom Herman may be by the school on Friday but will need to confirm that one.

Vincent has been saying for a while that he'd take an official visit to Texas at some point, and I fully expect that to happen under the new staff.

The Longhorns are sitting in a good spot with Kobe Boyce and Josh Thompson already committed, but it looks like the staff will make a strong push for Vincent and this one feels like a strong possibility for a flip if Texas gets him on campus. Chevin Calloway is another possibility (UT stopped by to check on him and teammate Damion Daniels this week) but the smart money is on Arkansas for Calloway.

--- Texas extended an offer to Cedar Hill WR Charleston Rambo, an OU commitment, earlier this week.

I haven't been able to catch up with Rambo directly, but did talk to a source with knowledge of his recruitment.

"I think a visit is possible and you know, from there…stuff can go crazy. I do think he is tight with (OU QB commitment Chris) Robison and that helps OU a lot."

--- Another new offer this week was extended to offensive lineman Grant Polley, a Colorado commitment. Polley, out of Denton, hasn't said much this week, which makes me think there's something cooking here.

I actually got Polley on the phone on Wednesday, but after identifying myself, he politely declined to do an interview. In my experience, a player doesn't decline an interview in this situation if he's not at least thinking about the new offer.

I checked with a Colorado source and it sounds like Polley has been very high on CU, but the Buffs are a bit nervous on this one.

"It's Texas. That simple," one person texted me.

--- UT assistant Jason Washington went by to check on La Grange RB J.K. Dobbins on Monday, and I'm hearing he made a very strong impression.

Dobbins remains committed to Ohio State and is saying all the right things publicly, but from what I can gather, it sounds like the door is cracked a bit for UT. Not much, but a bit.

Urban Meyer was in-home this week and probably helped solidify Dobbins' pledge, but expect Texas to keep trying to chip away and see if they can get him on campus for a visit before he enrolls in January.

As it stands now, I like Texas' chances with Toneil Carter (or Eno Benjamin if they offer) better than with Dobbins.

--- In case you missed it on Thursday night, five-star LB Baron Browning committed to Ohio State over Alabama. Urban Meyer locked up his commitment during an in-home on Wednesday night. Texas really wasn't in the picture at all.

The question now is if it will impact any other prospects? I heard this week that Jeffrey Okudah is basically a silent to OSU despite him taking other visits. You have to think Browning and Okudah could help with Dobbins, and it could even give Marvin Wilson and Anthony Hines something to think about.

--- Assistant coaches Oscar Giles and Derek Warehime did an in-home with top offensive line target Walker Little on Thursday night. No word yet on how the visit went, but I feel the same on this one as I have for a while ... it'll probably come down to Texas and Stanford, although a number of other schools aren't giving up.

Texas, Ole Miss, Stanford, Florida State and Georgia were all in-home this week.

Little will visit Ole Miss next week and then hit Texas and Stanford in January. Those last two visits should help settle this one.

--- No in-home has been set up for Marvin Wilson just yet, but I expect that will change soon. Wilson hadn't heard much from the new UT staff prior to Thursday, but that changed when the coaches made their way to his school for a visit.

Texas has ground to make up here - LSU seems to be the new hot team everybody is mentioning - but if the staff can get him on campus, especially on a big recruiting weekend with guys like Little and K'Lavon Chaisson, that could move the needle in UT's favor.

--- Texas did an in-home with LSU WR commitment Mannie Netherly on Thursday night. No word yet on how that visit went. Netherly has said he wants to take a visit to Texas and that could very well still happen, but wide receiver numbers are pretty tight.

--- A name to file away - Palm Beach Lakes (FL) wide receiver D'Jaundrae Edwards. The Houston staff was recruiting him and Edwards is under the impression Texas may reach out soon.

--- Interesting comments from UT defensive back commitments Josh Thompson and Kobe Boyce:

"At first, I wanted to know what's happening (with the coaching change) before anything went wrong. Then I started hearing coach Herman was going to be the guy. Now that he's hired, it feels like my commitment level is even higher," Thompson said. "I just know everything is going to be going in a positive direction. They know what they're looking for in me, have been recruiting me for a long time."

From Boyce .. "I feel like (his commitment) is up from here on out. I feel like a lot is going to be changed. It feels like the whole program is going to change, like we're going to do something special. I had felt that before, but even more so now."
