Oh for sure. Shaka can afford his own island now. Which is probably a good thing. Go live on your own private island and stop teaching kids how to play lackluster basketball.
Please don’t take this as attacking. But how do you see it as dormant? Texas has never been a “basketball program”. One final four in the last 70 years. A handful of Sweet 16s, pretty much in one small stretch of time.
A volcano has to have erupted before its called a dormant volcano. I just don’t see Texas as this.
If you’re looking at it differently, I understand.
Possibly what is meant is that Texas basketball used to be competitive. We would be top 2 or battling for top two in conference. Make a threat at a run in NCAA tourney. Now we know its either NIT or bust. Our team isn't ultra competitive.
I was a Shaka guy. I thought he would do great things. I was wrong. CDC surely has our next one picked out......just laying the ground work to make it happen. Pay the money and move on.

I don't know whether we are or ever have been a "basketball program". Baylor is certainly not a "basketball program" either but they are the No. 1 team in the country right now, so you could say they're not dormant but they were dormant before for sure.

I don’t think my “basketball program” statement is a straw man argument, or at least wasn’t intended to be. It’s in direct response to the poster’s statement of Texas being a dormant program. The general theme of that to me was “we can be back to elite”. ElCapitan never used the term elite...I just read into it that way. If I totally misused his intent wrong, that’s on me. Very possibly he meant as you stated, back to what you guys were with Penders and Barnes. Which would make it a straw man argument.

Yes, that's the way I took it; i.e. 'nice to be back to where we were', though I would add, as you can see, 'where we were' was pretty good, even if wasn't 'elite'. A lot of programs would like to have produced the results Penders and Barnes did at Texas, even if not it's not an 'elite' resume.
Good research Deutsch. I don't know if UT BBall should be elite, but it dang sure should be better than the crap rolled out the last couple of years - as proven by Barnes and Penders. Coach Fran had an amazing stat last night - over the last 3 years, UT has ELEVEN top 100 national recruits, and Baylor has TWO. Some guys underachieve, some overachieve, one or so may have turned pro, injuries/sickness, etc. etc. etc. - but that's a first team, a second team and an extra left over of top 100 guys. So even if some don't cut it or leave early, there still should be plenty of depth. This ain't about talent. I swear their whole offense is four guys standing around watching Coleman dribble. I think Coleman is a player (and Sims was great last night), but sakes alive give him an offense to run. Time to move on!
So this might make you guys chuckle a bit. The wifee and i just joined a new gym in north Phoenix . . . called EOS Fitness. Today was my 1st workout there.
Now picture this, there i am on the Hammer Strength bench press machine . . . trying my best to impress the 20 yr old scantily clad B-cup hard bodies at my 2 oclock . . .
When i notice some burnt orange streak across the 70'' TV at my 1 oclock high. Low and behold its Texas vs Iowa St . . . and we're down by 30 late in the game.
Im decked out in my Texas gear! Hat, shoes, socks . . . and everyone is laughing at my ass!

Micco, you're the only Sooner I'd engage with. I take all your posts as good-faith efforts.
Barnes had successful years and showed us how good our baseline can be. We're not going to be Kansas, but we were always in the conversation for Big 12 titles. I feel the same way about Oklahoma and Iowa State.
Barnes is a great coach, and has a good run here. Could be argued though that he underachieved here given the level of talent he was able to get on a regular basis.

on paper anyway that’s a 25 win team next year and if that happens(on anywhere close) Shaka probably gets an extension.
I said on paper. Doesn’t mean they’ll get there. Not as far fetched as you think either. I mean decent chance they have 20 going in to the big 12 tournament this year.
They could finish with close to 25 wins this year even as bad as it has been. Not sure why that sounds ridiculous.
Yeah overall this team really hasn’t been bad. They’ve just had moments where they’ve looked pretty terrible.
It's still hard to watch. Texas basketball might get a few views if it makes the sweet 16. Otherwise, it's another "who cares" season. I haven't been watching.
I agree that beating Tech was a good win, but remember, Tech has a younger team than we do.

Effort and preparedness are irrelevant? Tell that to Mackovic! This is a nice run they have going. To me it just highlights the wild inconsistencies of the Smart era.
