Here is the press release from UT:
FORT WORTH, Texas – Texas sophomore quarterback Shane Buechele has been named to the 2017 watch list for the Davey O’Brien Award, the Davey O’Brien Foundation announced Wednesday morning. The award is given annually to the nation’s best quarterback.
Buechele looks to become the third Longhorn all-time to win the award. Vince Young first won the award in 2005 before Colt McCoy took home the hardware following the 2009 season. McCoy was also a finalist as a junior in 2008.
A native of Arlington, Texas, Buechele had one of the best freshman seasons in school history by a quarterback, and arguably the best by a true freshman ever. He passed for a UT freshman-record 2,958 yards and finished second – behind only McCoy in 2006 – with 21 touchdown passes. He was the first true freshman in school history to start the first two games of a career at QB, and the first true freshman QB since the legendary Bobby Layne in 1944 to start the season opener.
Last season, Buechele became the first UT quarterback since McCoy won the O’Brien Award in 2009 to pass for 2,500 yards and 20 touchdowns in a season. His 12 starts on the season were the most by a true freshman QB in school history, while his five wins were tied for most. His 2,958 yards were seventh-most by a passer in school history. Buechele passed for at least 200 yards in 10-of-12 games and threw a touchdown pass in 11-of-12. He had multiple TD passes in seven games throughout the year.
In addition to the Davey O’Brien Award, Buechele has also been named to the watch list for the Maxwell Award which honors the nation’s top player at the end of the season.
The award, which was first presented in 1977, is named after Davey O’Brien who led TCU to the 1938 national championship. He was the first player to win the Heisman Trophy, Maxwell Award and Walter Camp Award in the same year.
