Texas football coach Tom Herman briefly addressed the media after Tuesday’s practice. Here are the highlights of Herman’s media availability:
- Herman said the team participated in 18 periods of practice, lasting around 90 minutes. Normally on a bye week, Herman does not introduce the next opponent. However, because next week’s game will occur on a Thursday and shorten Texas’ practice preparation, there were 20 minutes of scout team work incorporated on Tuesday.
- Jerrod Heard did not take any reps at quarterback on Tuesday. Herman said Heard is back at receiver right now. He said Heard could take the field in games standing next to Buechele and not make his presence on the field an obvious Wildcat package. However, Herman expects to use Heard’s skill set to their advantage.
- Receiver Armanti Foreman practiced with a “significant” brace on his wrist, according to Herman.
- Herman said Shane Buechele took 60 percent of first-team reps on Tuesday, while Sam Ehlinger had the remaining 40 percent. Last week, Buechele was sore every day after throwing in practice. Herman is optimistic the soreness will go away with some rest.
- Herman on Buechele being his guy right now: “60 percent, yep. He got 60 percent of the reps with the ones. He played well. Are we going to do this all the way up until Thursday? If we played today, yeah, Shane would start. But, tomorrow is a new day.” In addition, Herman said there is no Wally Pip for the moment.
- In addition, Herman said, “One of the best things I’ve seen from Shane in the nine months I’ve been here is how hard he coached Sam Ehlinger for the USC game. During the game, he was always by his side. He came on the field. He was on the headset. He was Coach Buechele for that game. There’s not a lot of kids in college football right now, especially at this level, that would feel like, ‘Hey, I can physically go play, but I understand that’s probably not the best thing for my team in the long run to do.’ And then go out and be such a positive influence on Sam. As far as physically, he didn’t look any worse for wear to me at practice.”
- Herman on Ehlinger’s performance against USC: “He played well. For the circumstances he was in, playing the defense he was in, environment he was in, he played well. Obviously, in his second college football game, there’s a lot of improvement still to go. We’re happy with where he is and his development process for a true freshman.”
- Tope Imade was moved back to offensive line because of the back of depth at that position. Imade will play guard. Herman described Imade as a big body that if an emergency occurs next Thursday, he can get in somebody’s way.
- Herman thinks Tristan Nickelson and Denzel Okafor eventually settled in against USC, especially in the two-minute drive.
- Herman said the staff engaged in long and hard discussions the past two days about who they are and what is their identity. The discussion revolved around how to better utilize their running backs and get their playmakers on the field to create matchup issues.
