Shape of program

With or without Charlie, the program really isn't in that bad of shape and it certainly could be worse.

We could be Baylor, that has basically stopped recruiting and might not ever recover from this because they don't have the Texas name recognition. It almost feels a little like the SMU death penalty for them, but this is one less competitor we will have to battle in recruiting.

Tcu has it worse (they will likely miss a bowl), Texas Tech has it worse.

In reality, while Charlie hasn't produced a winning record; he has done a good job cleaning up the program so that we don't have Baylor-ish problems. He's recruiting some good young talent that will give the next coaching staff (likely Herman) a very talented and experienced roster so he can have success from day 1 and not have to completely gut the program like Charlie had to.

Charlie was setup for disaster from the beginning, because he needed to completely gut the program but turn it into a winner in 3 years with Swoopes or Heard as his QB's. I think even Saban would've failed, and it's probably why the big names passed. Now he took $20 mil to do that, so let's not feel sorry for him, he knew what he was signing up for.

But we are in a completely different scenario now for a new coach, and it's one that can actually give the new staff a chance at great success with young talent and a foundation of a program that doesn't need to hit the re-boot. This job is MUCH MUCH more appealing to an A list coach than it was when we hired Charlie.

James Franklin won 9 games twice and bowls at Vandy and now has Penn State battling for the Big 10 title over OSU/Michigan. Strong was the WRONG choice, OBVIOUSLY!!!

Agree mostly but to say Charlie was set up to fail is wrong. Charlie set himself up to fail knowing he wasn't ready. He made those comments hisself in August.

I don't get this "set up to fail" thought. He lost to Kansas at the end of his 3rd year. Kansas.

I think it's the easy thing to say when someone fails. If you take a job and do not ask questions or find out some info within that is all on you. If you make a decision just based on $$$$$ then that's all on you. He bit off more than he could chew. Great man with great ethics but that's not enough to be successful at a high profile job.

I agree guys. I think the situation was why the A and B team coaches passed on Texas, but why they wouldn't now. I equate it to sales: Charlie took over an office where he needed to fire half the staff and start over but he had a huge quota for 3 years straight. That's a situation that you don't want to walk into if your a smart businessmen, which is why all of those coaches just used UT to get a payday at their schools. This time it's different. Still a huge quota, but you've got a roster in place that could hit that quota. I just think this job is a much better job now than it was when Charlie took it over, and at least we have him to thank for that. He didn't turn it into a championship program, but he might have saved it from disaster with cleaning up the behavioral part of the program and laying some of the foundation for future success. If we could just get a stud QB, we would go far. Every championship level team (outside of Bama usually even tho that freshman is a stud) has an elite QB running it

Obviously the color of one person's skin outweighs the body of work with some people. I could care less what color the Coaches skin is... he has done a piss poor job.

The thing is diadevic none of us really hate Strong the man. When he got hired he said during a presser his offense was going to be "wide open and fast and fun to watch" then he hired Watson. My first post ever was about this and I got blasted. Why did he say that if he had no intention? Then he reassigns Watson the next year AFTER the worst offense EVER. Same with Bedford after last year. He can't seem to look ahead and see what is coming. He said Texas would never lose 5 games again.....no one told him to say it. He talks about being accountable.....he needs to hold himself accountable.

I agree. This actually takes away from people who are really being discriminated against in my opinion.

Strong didn't have a huge quota to hit. He would be the coach next year if he won 7 or 8 games this season. That's not a huge quota and that's not an accomplishment. Hell I would even argue had we beaten Kansas he would very likely be the coach regardless of TCU. He was on the bare minimum plan and already used his allotment of mulligans. Unfortunately even the bare minimum requires having a winning season and not losing to Kansas in year 3.

What you are saying is being overlooked but very true. If he beats Kansas (get real he should have) and doesn't get blown out by tcu then he comes back. He could not get his team ready to play. They were flat and lifeless.
