Notes from Charlie Strong's Monday Press Conference - Suchomel:
Obviously disappointed about the loss. Get a week off, chance to evaluate three games and the issues they're having on defense.
Told coaches on defense and some offensive coaches, now they can evaluate where they are, see what they can do to give players a chance to be successful.
A bunch of young players need to be playing, will get that worked out over the next couple weeks.
On staff changes ... he's been involved in the defense, can and will get more involved. Coaches are a direct reflection of their position and will be accountable for their position. When specifically asked if there will be no changes, Strong said he has two weeks to look at things.
On blown coverages, things can be fixed. Nothing too drastic that had to do with the scheme, more about how they played it.
On younger players, he loves Hager and Roach because of the energy and passion they bring. Brandon Jones, making plays on special teams. Have to get him on the field, see more of. He's a playmaker and plays the way you like to see it played.
The defense can be fixed. Strong will get more involved, they'll get it fixed. You have to get off the field on third downs. Gave up too many big plays. Have to put guys into position to make plays, and demand that they do it. Said it was on the coaches "big time" and they have to get the players to play better. Defense can be fixed. They're going to play outstanding offenses, but you can't give up big plays like they did and expect to win.
They have two weeks to look at it, and then they'll know what they need to get done.
Three games under their belt, all about evaluation, look at themselves and see how they can get better. They can all improve and get better. They all have unlimited potential inside of them, let's bring it out. Sometimes it takes a loss to bring that out. Let's sit down, look at themselves, see how much better they can be.
Shane Buechele and his father ... Shane came up in an athletic family. The thing you like about Buechele, has a silent confidence about him, the way he carries himself, makes everyone around him so much better. When he's in a tough position, he knows how to go compete because he has an edge about him.
Texas got on Buechele early enough that they were able to get him committed, and he stuck to his commitment. His family is all Horns now.
Has a different team now, one that is much more mature. They've been through tough losses, they'll be able to bounce back. Met with them right when they got back about 6:45 Sunday morning, told them they'll get better and everyone has a piece of the blame. Their goal is still in front of them to win the conference. Now they have to do it, and it starts on the road. Have to be able to handle adversity.
What's frustrating, it still comes down to fundamentals and technique at the end of the day, and putting guys in position to have success. Feels if they can get from 24-30 points on offense, they should win the game. Was frustrating because Cal didn't just march down the field, they threw it over their head. Texas has talent, that shouldn't happen.
Strong said that in defensive meetings, he pitches in with his ideas of what they should be doing. Doesn't tell them "this is what we need to do," more listens to what the defensive coaches are saying.
Plenty of time to get it fixed. If you look at Saturday night, you have to make them earn every yard they get and Texas isn't doing that, allowing too many big plays. 11 big plays, 9 passes and 2 runs. Too many missed tackles. It's all fixable, just a matter of playing within the system. Have to coach it hard and keep coaching it.
It's all about demanding that things get done. Don't say "well I told him." If you told him and there are still mistakes, the guy either doesn't understand or just isn't going to go do it. Have to make sure the players understand.
After the game, told the players they were riding the positive wave and got caught up in. Can't ride that wave. Have to be disciplined, focused, locked in. Whatever they do, they always travel in a coat and tie. This was a 3 1/2 hour plane read, so he let guys wear sweatsuits. Said he doesn't care how long they're traveling any more, will wear a coat and tie. Simple things like that, wants everyone to look the same, carry themselves the same. It's a business trip, it's an interview.
Timing of the bye ... it's early, if it had been down the road a little more it could have helped. Have to go nine in a row after this, no rest for injuries.
Other guys, not just Strong, have the ability to take over the defense. It will get fixed. Whatever he has to do to make it happen he will, but it will get fixed.
Forcing turnovers will be a point of emphasis moving forward. Have to be able to get turnovers, can't miss tackles, can't give up big plays. Have to get turnovers, play great defense, play well in the red zone and have great kicking game.
No head injury for Buechele. Injury was inside close to the rib area. Buechele's a tough, competitor, when he said he was ready to go back in they put him back in. "He's good, he's healthy."
On QBs in the Big 12 ... have to make sure you get the right defenses in place. Have to cover, but have to create pressure too, make the QB uncomfortable. With anything, it's about their game preparation. Give them something they can do, demand they do it. If it's 1 or 2 calls, then it's 1 or 2 calls, just give them something they can do.
On injuries .. D Davis came out but he's the only one. They'll look at Shane, but those are the only two.
The RBs have been impressive and continue to be. Hard to get those guys down, and then throw Swoopes in as a runner, they can wear defenses down.
On Malik, he moved around a lot against Notre Dame. Against UTEP, saw more Hager/Roach. This game, more dime package so he was rushing some. Ball was getting out of there quickly. He's so talented, can drop into coverage, can rush the passer. People are going to find out where he is, turn protection that way. When that happens, have to be able to bring pressure from the other side.
Buechele is fine, bounced back fine. He has a lot of toughness in him. Just has confidence about him. When he walks out there, you know he's going to play well.
On coaching harder and smarter .. "we've been doing that" but once you lose a game, have to be better moving forward.
They'll see who their leaders are after the loss. Perkins and Boyette stood up on Sunday. Players are frustrated, let one get away that they should have had. Have to take the experience and get better. Leaders will step up.
Duvernay, he's good with the ball in his hands. A couple times on kick off returns, he'll hit it up in there and has the speed to run away from people. Unbelievable talent with his speed, athletic ability and ability to run away from people.
On offense, scored 43 points, rushed for 300+ yards. Offensively, they handled their business but even on offense, they know they can improve and get better. They'll get much better on offense and will be tough to slow down because they have the added dimension of being able to run the ball.
Sheroid Evans, he's a smart player. It's not that they've lost confidence in him. He's been around a long time, knows he can play much better than he did against Cal. They still have confidence in him.
