*sigh* The morning after vs Cal

As much as I want to agree with you. Texas is a better team than Cal, we lost that game for two reasons.

1. We can't stop the pass.
2. We got too cute on offense.

As Clob said, run run run and then run some more. They couldn't stop us, there was no reason go away from the run.

We have way too much talent in our defensive backfield to not be shutting down every opponent. Or at lease slowing them down. Unless there is anyone here that thinks San Diego state has better DBs than we do?

Agree. We are loosing to inferior teams. Talking yourself into thinking a certain W-L record is okay is a nice workaround, but the fact remains that we are often being outcoached out there.

Did we not run the ball? We had over 50 carries... To me that's running the piss out of the ball

Coach, if you ran the ball 50 times for 6 yards a pop, and you could have run it 70 times for 5.8 yards a pop....... would you pray for 80 plays?

Jesus, the offense did plenty................The defense sucked hind tit at getting push in the trenches and blown assignments in the secondary.

I'm on the same page with what your saying.

BUT we had over 500 yards of offense and should've had more if not for drops my the WR's.

Didn't we all call for this type of offense? Well we got what we wanted. Sterlin ran his system to almost perfection. He wasn't being cute, he was running the system he was brought here to run.

We did up until the 4th quarter then for the most part we were pass happy. With that said, we put up more yards than cal, more first downs than cal, etc etc. The problem was the defense. Our defense gave up 18 plays of ten yards or more. And Strong has in fact changed his tune from Saturday night. Although he did not name Bedford, he pretty clearly stated that Bedford will be losing some of his responsibility. Its about time. I think the defense actually looks worse this year than it did last year. Our safeties have no idea what they are doing.

Agreed. My only BUT in this instance is this--

Adjustments must be made during the course of a game. Sterling is looking at the D and should be think "well sh!t..... we can't stop Cal on D so I've got to stop them on O. Keep my D off the field for as long as possible. Hurry the O up to the line and then milk the clock. Run, run, run and give my D as much rest as humanly possible."

We're we taking deep shots in the 4th quarter? Yes we were. I get taking deep shots when your up 3 scores and trying to nail the coffin shut in a 35-10 game...... but in a 43-38 game? In a game where your D can't stop them?

Again I'm right there with you. Some of those things when your just sitting on the couch watching you go WTF? Keep pounding the pill.

But when you think about this system, why did we have so much success running the ball? Were we just over powering them? Sometimes. But the heaviest box we saw all night was a 6 man box. because of the deep ball the quick route threat. Granted im not talking about when Swoopes was in.

I'm just thinking about this is terms of the system, and we ran it exactly how it was supposed to be run. We even slowed the tempo wayyyyyyyy down and the entire 4th quarter I think Boo false cadenced, told the line to relax, checked with side-line to receive the play--- all to slow the game down.

Notes from Charlie Strong's Monday Press Conference - Suchomel:

Obviously disappointed about the loss. Get a week off, chance to evaluate three games and the issues they're having on defense.

Told coaches on defense and some offensive coaches, now they can evaluate where they are, see what they can do to give players a chance to be successful.

A bunch of young players need to be playing, will get that worked out over the next couple weeks.

On staff changes ... he's been involved in the defense, can and will get more involved. Coaches are a direct reflection of their position and will be accountable for their position. When specifically asked if there will be no changes, Strong said he has two weeks to look at things.

On blown coverages, things can be fixed. Nothing too drastic that had to do with the scheme, more about how they played it.
On younger players, he loves Hager and Roach because of the energy and passion they bring. Brandon Jones, making plays on special teams. Have to get him on the field, see more of. He's a playmaker and plays the way you like to see it played.

The defense can be fixed. Strong will get more involved, they'll get it fixed. You have to get off the field on third downs. Gave up too many big plays. Have to put guys into position to make plays, and demand that they do it. Said it was on the coaches "big time" and they have to get the players to play better. Defense can be fixed. They're going to play outstanding offenses, but you can't give up big plays like they did and expect to win.

They have two weeks to look at it, and then they'll know what they need to get done.
Three games under their belt, all about evaluation, look at themselves and see how they can get better. They can all improve and get better. They all have unlimited potential inside of them, let's bring it out. Sometimes it takes a loss to bring that out. Let's sit down, look at themselves, see how much better they can be.

Shane Buechele and his father ... Shane came up in an athletic family. The thing you like about Buechele, has a silent confidence about him, the way he carries himself, makes everyone around him so much better. When he's in a tough position, he knows how to go compete because he has an edge about him.

Texas got on Buechele early enough that they were able to get him committed, and he stuck to his commitment. His family is all Horns now.

Has a different team now, one that is much more mature. They've been through tough losses, they'll be able to bounce back. Met with them right when they got back about 6:45 Sunday morning, told them they'll get better and everyone has a piece of the blame. Their goal is still in front of them to win the conference. Now they have to do it, and it starts on the road. Have to be able to handle adversity.

What's frustrating, it still comes down to fundamentals and technique at the end of the day, and putting guys in position to have success. Feels if they can get from 24-30 points on offense, they should win the game. Was frustrating because Cal didn't just march down the field, they threw it over their head. Texas has talent, that shouldn't happen.
Strong said that in defensive meetings, he pitches in with his ideas of what they should be doing. Doesn't tell them "this is what we need to do," more listens to what the defensive coaches are saying.

Plenty of time to get it fixed. If you look at Saturday night, you have to make them earn every yard they get and Texas isn't doing that, allowing too many big plays. 11 big plays, 9 passes and 2 runs. Too many missed tackles. It's all fixable, just a matter of playing within the system. Have to coach it hard and keep coaching it.

It's all about demanding that things get done. Don't say "well I told him." If you told him and there are still mistakes, the guy either doesn't understand or just isn't going to go do it. Have to make sure the players understand.
After the game, told the players they were riding the positive wave and got caught up in. Can't ride that wave. Have to be disciplined, focused, locked in. Whatever they do, they always travel in a coat and tie. This was a 3 1/2 hour plane read, so he let guys wear sweatsuits. Said he doesn't care how long they're traveling any more, will wear a coat and tie. Simple things like that, wants everyone to look the same, carry themselves the same. It's a business trip, it's an interview.

Timing of the bye ... it's early, if it had been down the road a little more it could have helped. Have to go nine in a row after this, no rest for injuries.

Other guys, not just Strong, have the ability to take over the defense. It will get fixed. Whatever he has to do to make it happen he will, but it will get fixed.

Forcing turnovers will be a point of emphasis moving forward. Have to be able to get turnovers, can't miss tackles, can't give up big plays. Have to get turnovers, play great defense, play well in the red zone and have great kicking game.

No head injury for Buechele. Injury was inside close to the rib area. Buechele's a tough, competitor, when he said he was ready to go back in they put him back in. "He's good, he's healthy."
On QBs in the Big 12 ... have to make sure you get the right defenses in place. Have to cover, but have to create pressure too, make the QB uncomfortable. With anything, it's about their game preparation. Give them something they can do, demand they do it. If it's 1 or 2 calls, then it's 1 or 2 calls, just give them something they can do.

On injuries .. D Davis came out but he's the only one. They'll look at Shane, but those are the only two.

The RBs have been impressive and continue to be. Hard to get those guys down, and then throw Swoopes in as a runner, they can wear defenses down.

On Malik, he moved around a lot against Notre Dame. Against UTEP, saw more Hager/Roach. This game, more dime package so he was rushing some. Ball was getting out of there quickly. He's so talented, can drop into coverage, can rush the passer. People are going to find out where he is, turn protection that way. When that happens, have to be able to bring pressure from the other side.
Buechele is fine, bounced back fine. He has a lot of toughness in him. Just has confidence about him. When he walks out there, you know he's going to play well.

On coaching harder and smarter .. "we've been doing that" but once you lose a game, have to be better moving forward.

They'll see who their leaders are after the loss. Perkins and Boyette stood up on Sunday. Players are frustrated, let one get away that they should have had. Have to take the experience and get better. Leaders will step up.

Duvernay, he's good with the ball in his hands. A couple times on kick off returns, he'll hit it up in there and has the speed to run away from people. Unbelievable talent with his speed, athletic ability and ability to run away from people.

On offense, scored 43 points, rushed for 300+ yards. Offensively, they handled their business but even on offense, they know they can improve and get better. They'll get much better on offense and will be tough to slow down because they have the added dimension of being able to run the ball.
Sheroid Evans, he's a smart player. It's not that they've lost confidence in him. He's been around a long time, knows he can play much better than he did against Cal. They still have confidence in him.

So he's saying "I'm on the job, I will fix it."

IMHO-- that's bad for him. If he stays "away" from the D and brings in a consultant like Robinson he can show he took action, but didn't get personally involved. If he gets personally involved and we stink it up continuously, then it's all on him.

Risky move.

If this team stinks, it's on him regardless of how much he gets involved. Or at least it should be.

Charlie Strong was a great DC for Florida, none of us can deny that. I have always felt that a head coach needs to be directly involved on the side of the ball he is best at.

When we hired Strong, my first thought was, good, now we don't have to worry about having a good defense. Well, here I am worrying about our defense. That is on Charlie, but if he can fix it, all is well. If he can't, then I guarantee we have the wrong guy as head coach.

Takes time to be able to read and quickly react to these type offenses (Veer n shoot) (Air Raid) from a defensive perspective. We need pass rushers on the D line that can pressure the QB without the need to blitz so we can keep adequate numbers back. It's going to take time to get there... Bama has it but we do not at this point. One of the biggest assets to a D is a NG or DT that draws a double team every play. Once we get this and real threats from the ends, then we will be much better on D. CS and Bradford will get us there. It is going to take time. I believe CS was the coach that recruited the current players at Louisville..... Look at them now. Enough for me. Grab the popcorn and enjoy the improved play.

There is a big difference in defending the spread. Main thing is you don't give up big plays, you worry less about getting off the field early, and more of keeping everything in front of you. You tackle, keep the ball in front, and then as the field shrinks you stop them. If you hold them to FGs and not TDs, it's an easy win. Consistently blitzing on 3rd down is suicide. Absolute suicide. 19 plays over 10 yds tells me VB is approaching this wrong. They never had to run plays inside the 10. They scored before they got there.

Do you want a bureaucrat or a coach? If we knew 6 months ago the Horns would be 2-1 with a great QB, we'd have been ecstatic.

Just watched the replay and the number one reason we lost was the secondary was confused and didn't know their coverages. Is this because of the players not putting in enough effort to learn or on the coaches? I hope they take this loss personal. Two weeks to make it right.

Our defense sucked the same way against ND. CS needs to stop acting like it was a one game thing.

Who is coaching kickoff team btw? Why don't we just spot them the ball on the 35 every time?
Isn't there a team in arkansas that always onside kicks? Yeah, we should do that. Minimizes kick 6 chances and once in a blue moon we might recover a kick or 2

Pulaski Academy in AR
Always onside kicks
Always goes for two
Never punts unless inside own 30 or longer than 4th and 15

I actually did a lot of research on this a couple years back when they snapped HP home win streak. The numbers are in your favor to do all those things. But that only applied to HS football. Didn't look at any level higher than hs ball.
