We’ve been checking with a variety of sources today to get some scrimmage notes. Call it a cumulative effort. Here are a few things we heard …
--- Sounds like the offense had the better day of the two sides of the ball for the most part. I was told there’s some rust that had to be shaken off, as expected, but the offense did really well in the first half of the scrimmage. The defense did tighten things up in the second half of the scrimmage.
--- The talk of the practice, from multiple people, was freshman receiver Tory Omeire. “Real deal” and “buy stock” were used, and one person even said he looked like the “best wide receiver on the team right now.” Omeire did tweak something late in the scrimmage, but it doesn’t sound like it’s anything major based on what I heard.
--- Jordan Whittington and Jake Smith also made a lot of plays. Those two were rotating in and out quite a bit with the 1s.
--- Tarik Black and Joshua Moore ran with the 1s. Heard good things about Black as well.
--- I believe Marcus Washington may have gotten a couple snaps with the 1s based on what one person said.
--- Keaontay Ingram was held out. The staff took it pretty easy with Roschon Johnson, per one source, but we heard Roschon did well when he was on the field.
--- Bijan Robinson got some work and “looked solid,” per one source. He didn’t really do anything that stood out too much, but ran hard. One person said the emphasis of the scrimmage was more on the passing game than the run game.
--- Sam Ehlinger was “lighting it up” per one person. Casey Thompson and Hudson Card both got time with the twos. I heard Thompson did some good things, but one observer said Card looks to be the better of the two back-up quarterbacks overall.
--- The starting d-line was Moro Ojomo, Taquon Graham, Keondre Coburn and Joseph Ossai. Juwan Mitchell and DeMarvion Overshown were the starting linebackers.
--- Chris Adimora, Caden Sterns, Chris Brown, Jalen Green and D’Shawn Jamison started in the secondary. Kenyatta Watson also got some run with the 1s. Josh Thompson was out.
--- The team worked the middle of the field quite a bit, with Jake Smith and Whittington making plays there. Same with Omeire … one person compared Omeire’s hands to Devin Duvernay and said he basically catches everything that’s close to him.
---The starting offensive line remains unchanged. Cosmi and Angilau on the left side. Kerstetter at center. Hookfin at right guard and Okafor at right tackle. I did hear that Christian Jones looked good today and one person thought he would really push Okafor before things are said and done.
