I thought this was an interesting interview from Nov 2018, if for no other reason than to give some background on a particular way of thinking about China that almost certainly indicates the more reflective version of the White House's outlook. A more reflective version, at any rate, than we could glean from the president's tweets.
Very long, but well worth watching to the end if you can spare the time. Bannon's critics will find plenty to hate, and his defenders will find plenty that resonates.
As per usual, there doesn't seem to be much middle ground. Either Bannon is wrong and Trump is needlessly provoking a peace-loving power, or else Bannon is right and we will have to work hard to avoid another full-blown Cold War which could last as long as the previous one. Or perhaps even worse.
