Stormlight Archive Book Series / The Way of Kings

Just finished The Way of Kings enjoyed it. Quite excellent, justifying its 4.7 good reads rating.

Words of Radiance looks like it should be equally impressive based on its 4.8 rating.

However, appears to be a drop off for all the .5 books ... 2.5, 3.5, 4.5 ....

What the heck does this mean? Are they essential to the series?
