If my research is right this is our first #1 ranking since 2008. Okay, with the new 12 team playoff, rankings may not matter much at this part of the season but it’s still pretty damn cool.

Doesn't matter. I'm not being a dick.... but this is the worst thing that could happen to us at this moment.

Why?

We've got a freshman at QB.... ya.... he's a talented freshman..... and he is the future. But I can tell you right now, he's not quite ready.
That backside blitz that UTSA put on him- he couldn't "feel" it coming.

Georgia, Bama, Ohio st send that blitz and it's lights out Manning and hello (gimme a sec while I google) Trey Owens.....

It would be Garrett Gilbert part two.... ya.... Garrett had a chance to win that game-- legit, he did. But Bama pulled a blindside corner blitz and just like that- poof- Garrett Gilbert's career started a death spiral from which he's never fully recovered from. In the last 10 years he's been on 11 NFL practice rosters and 1 arena league roster.

Dude was MEGA talented. Jackie Sherrill said he was "the best quarterback I've seen since Dan Marino"....
Do you know who coached Dan Marino in college at Pitt??

Jackie Sherrill....

If Garrett Gilbert came to the league and was HALF as good a Dan Marino-- he'd still have made a few pro-bowls.... but he didn't.

Why?

I believe because he wasn't ready. It ruined him.

The 2nd reason this is bad for us is because--- NOW that asshole at Georgia, Kirby Smart, has something to motivate his boys with. They were running out of motivational material, certainly. Not anymore.

3rd-- we don't need a target like that painted on our backs. Aggy sucks right now but they've been here in this jungle of the SEC longer than we have. It wouldn't surprise me if the sheepafiers started taking up collections to pay NIL money to Georgia or Miss st or arky or Kentucky, for knock outs.

"But Clob-- nobody has ever paid players for a bounty on the head of other players........" dramatic pause

Mmmmk.....

Yay-- we're number 1.......

Georgia and Alabama play each other on Sept 28. I think the winner will of that game will be the new #1

Oh poop. Everyone knows it's early but this is the first time in 16 years we've been ranked #1 in the regular season let's enjoy this. And were not going to lose the next 2 games. As for Kirby Smart he's got 2 weeks and he's only thinking about Alabama. Texas being #1 is the least of his concerns.

Man, Clob pretty much nailed how I feel about this ranking. #1 again feels good as hell but damn our guys don't need that fools gold before we start playing actual teams.

I fully believe we have a shot against anyone but they sure seem to do better when they are underdogs. Gimme anywhere else top 10 but #1 without taking it? Sure hope they embrace the goliath moniker.

It's too early to say he won't play Saturday.
He’s not playing next Saturday. And we really don’t even need him for Mississippi St. they are terrible. Let him rest up for a few weeks and be ready for Red River. That’s not an injury they’re gonna want to push him through.

Garrett Gilbert was a true freshman forced into action in the biggest game of the year. Arch is a redshirt freshman who’s been in the system for almost 2 years now going back to graduating early from high school. He’s been brought along very slowly. I don’t even think it’s close to the same scenario.

Garrett Gilbert was also a terrible fit for the scheme we were running at the time and that was a big reason he was such a bust IMO.

This is Ewers Heisman season and we know he wants to win it. Also, Louisiana Monroe is overmatched. He can put up some big numbers and sit in the second half. Every game counts.

Arch has a ton of resources and is probably way ahead of where most kids his age would be. Sark is a great coach be he is also getting help from the family members.

Quote from Peyton Manning on a podcast

"And he will, every now and then, text me with a question about a two-minute drill, this is what happened in practice today. And I'm sure as soon as he texts me the question, he regrets it. Because you can't answer a question about a two minute drill with a text back. You have to go to the voice memo. And it can't be just one. So you bang him back with a seven minute voice memo response about the two minute, about what the defense is doing, the plays that you like. You gotta go to your staples. And then you finish it and you're like, I didn't even mention the fact that a defense after a time out will probably come with an exotic blitz. So you better call a max protection coming out of the timeout. And then you finish that one, that's about a six minutes. And then you're like, I totally forgot about the red zone. So three voice memos later...he's probably calling Eli more."

Quote from Eli Manning about a text message.

'Hey, good game. Made some nice plays. Hey, last play, it looks like they rolled a cover two. You try to force an out to a single receiver instead of working the three-receiver concept to the right.'

Blah blah blah. You’re talking superstitious voo doo stuff. I don’t give a crapola. Would it be better to be number 4, 5, etc.? Na man. We’re number one baby!

Agreed. If the boy can deal with the pain and play effectively then let him pad some stats. Would love to see UT add another Heisman next to Earl, Ricky and Vince (…as it should have been).

I can already see it. This interesting injury will be turned into a great warrior story.

So Ewers sits a game (let him heal up a little). It’s just LM. Gives Arch another game to season. But then Ewers returns to lead the team on their first ever SEC game against MS. MS is a beatable team but let’s not forget the historic importance of this game for UT against a vaunted SEC foe.

Ewers throws for 275, 3 tds, while wincing in pain every other play. All the game cameras and announcers highlight and narrate every moment of agony. He turns the game over to Arch in the 4th qtr. Longhorn nation loudly embraces his courage as he walks off the field. Can you imagine? It will be in the news cycles ad nauseam thereafter leading up to the RRR. He’ll be back on top again when we kick their ass.

….well I hope it plays out that way.

Didn't forget Colt. This is a little bit difficult because Bradford was a great qb and a good person of the field. But McCoy's were just as good and he should have won. I've always been pissed at Mack Brown and Greg Davis for letting this happen.

Ewers now rulled “questionable” for LM this weekend. I think my narrative may play out.

IMO, I think he needs to play vs. Mississippi State if at all healthy. Obviously don't force it and make it worse, but I feel it is very important for him to play that very first SEC game.

This week let Arch get his 300 yards and 5 scores!!!!

did y'all notice that POS Tennessee proudly performed an on side kick this weekend......when they were leading 30 to 0....

Not even Bob Stoops would do that....So they won 71 - 0....against mighty Kent State....with dick moves like that it means nothing.

F*ck that fake UT...

Yeah, I really don’t think the Vols are as good as they’re being made out to be. They’ve beaten up bad opponents and run up the score. In addition to the onside kick. They kicked a FG with like 3 minutes left in the NC State game, when they were up by 38 points. They ran a punt block against Chattanooga with 1:23 left in the game, when they were up by 50. That’s bush league stuff.

What I don’t get is why no one is calling them out on it. I’d like to see someone return the favor to them.

What do you expect from Huepel.... he's a dirt burglar at heart. Where do you think he learned the bush league behavior? It's going to be 2 shitbirds battling it out for the neanderthal trophy this Saturday.

Vaunted? Haven’t seen them have you?

i'm not worried about the ranking. truth be told, the 5 seed is the sweet spot for the cfp. you get a home game against probably the worst team in the playoff. i'd take a home playoff vs memphis. after that, you're seeded to face the least of the 4 byes at a neutral site. hypothetically, let's say georgia, ohio state, miami and utah are the 4 conf champs with a bye-- you don't like that matchup vs utah on a neutral field? yeah you get the 1 seed in the semis, but you're going to have to play them at some point anyway. and they'll be coming off a game against tennessee or oregon or usc or somebody else that's... well... better than utah.

just saying that conference championship, while nice, isn't the end all be all

With all this talk about Heipel's propensity for running up the score something came to mind. Two years ago he went for a td with 20 seconds to go in a 66/24 win over Missouri. But the last year the Tigers got even 36/7. This guy makes no effort to stop scoring. This guy is really bad.

We beat Michigan at the big house and throttled three other lesser opponents. This team is solid. I’m drinking a lot of tang lately (for you younger guys look it up and you’ll get the reference) the AP (theoretically a national base of our peers) have us as a clear #1. So as I’m watching I’m wondering what we all see. Our team is stacked with a couple of solid, NFL top 10 draft picks QBs, a shipyard full of offensive lineman, an NFL caliber TE (who saw that coming), serviceable possibly great RBs, and the WR core is simply special. Do I need to go down the list on defense? This is a team we all used to look and say about Alabama. This is 2005 & 2008/2009 caliber. We’re finally here my friends.

We lack depth in some spots.
We aren't pounding anyone into submission on the ground, anytime soon. We do have some talented backs-- but we don't have a guy like we've had in the past-- a game breaking work horse.

Granted- those are few and far between.

Let's get this "sec grind" underway and we'll know more.
