Now that the dust has settled, I thought it was high time to catch up on what the staff looks like. There will certainly be other additions to fill roles such as video, analytics, and other support staff roles.

Head Coach: Jim Schlossnagle

Analysis: Why was hiring Jim Schlossnagle a big power move for Texas? During his time as a head coach at TCU and Texas A&M from 2004-2024, he has averaged 41 wins per season against an average of 19 losses per season. He is not always known as a players coach, but his greatest strengths are surrounding himself with extremely talented assistant coaches, staff members, and quality players. He demands a lot of his players, but he does a great job at motivating and getting the most out of his players. Schlossnagle brings a winning pedigree and consistent track record of putting his programs in a position to win and contend.

The biggest slight of Schlossnagle is that he has not won a national title. Looking at the coaches that are actively coaching with a national title, it is a fairly small group, and interestingly enough, the last four coaches to win the national title have all been first time winners.

Expectations in Austin and around the program will always be Omaha. In landing Schlossnagle, the Horns have hired a proven winner that will utilize a mix of talented high school talent and transfer portal to achieve exactly that.

Coaching Record: 946-455 (.675)

Schlossnagle has previously been head coach of UNLV (2 years), TCU (18 years), and Texas A&M (3 years). In his 23 years as a head coach, his teams have missed the NCAA Tournament just 4 times, one of which was due to COVID. In fact, Schlossnagle is just the fourth coach to win multiple College World Series games at different programs, joining the likes of Augie Garrido, Larry Cochell, and Andy Lopez.

Current athletic director Chris Del Conte had this to say about Schlossnagle, “He's a guy who obviously knows our state so well, is very familiar with our program's rich and proud history and everything Texas Baseball is all about, and absolutely checks all the boxes for this critical position. He really understands every level of building a team, develops and gets the best out of his players and coaches, recruits with the best of them and is totally dialed into the holistic growth of the student-athletes in his program.”

Here is what Cy Young award winner Jake Arreieta has to say about Schlossnagle. “Jim Schlossnagle has an intensity and a passion for the game that is unrivaled. The sacrifices he made for the programs he’s led speak for themselves. He lives for the game, period. Schloss was a tough guy to play for… for certain types of players. The ones that didn’t take academics seriously. The ones that showed up late to workouts. The ones that missed meeting. The ones that didn’t bust their asses every single day. The ones that weren’t accountable to their teammates. The ones that were soft. Jim Schlossnagle demands excellence, he expects discipline, and knows how to turn boys into men. This is why he was chosen to run the premier program in all of college baseball.”

Associate Head Coach: Nolan Cain

Analysis: Landing coach Schlossnagle was a massive coup for the Horns. The fact that he brought a talented assistant Nolan Cain cannot be understated. Cain is an extremely talented assistant coach that has been up and coming on the baseball landscape. In fact, the early comments from numerous players and fans was that A&M should hire Cain as the head coach. Expectations are that Cain will not remain an assistant for too many more seasons, as he will certainly be on athletic director’s radar for open positions in the future.

Cain is a tireless worker that connects well with players and recruits, helping develop strong talent pipelines. One of the glaring holes with the Texas program was the roster management. With the hire of Nolan Cain, he has already started working on correcting that and evaluating the needs of the program for not just 2024, but future seasons. These efforts are already evident by two of the 2025 A&M recruits immediately decommitting and subsequently committing to Texas.

Former assistant coach at Texas A&M and LSU, Cain was a pitcher for LSU during their 2009 national title winning season in which the Tigers defeated Texas to claim their 6th national title.

Cain is very highly regarded for his recruiting abilities, securing numerous top classes at A&M, including the #1 transfer portal class in 2023. Three of his last four recruiting classes at LSU were ranked in the top 5 nationally as well.

Cain spent three seasons at Texas A&M under Jim Schlossnagle and five seasons at LSU under former coach Paul Manieri.

Schlossnagle had this to say about Cain when promoting him to associate head coach in 2023, “Nolan has been the glue to our program over the past two years and especially over the past few weeks. He has more than earned this promotion and has continued to prove his incredible value both on the field and on the recruiting trail. We are excited to have Nolan and his family.”

During his tenure at Texas A&M, Cain also coached catchers and was the third base coach.

Assistant Coach: Troy Tulowitzki

Analysis: His resume as a player speaks for itself. His reputation, especially out West is a huge benefit for the Horns because he can work with Cain in recruiting top California talent. While he is a quieter guy, Tulo connects with players, helping them understand the mentality and mental makeup it takes to be successful, along with helping identify areas of improvement in their swing mechanics.

Tulo joining the staff full time is interesting as he has different styles than the new staff members, but for the Texas program, it helps provide continuity and will be a benefit to the guys on the roster.

Tulo, as he is affectionately known, has been a member of the Texas staff in some capacity for four of the past five seasons. The 13-year MLB veteran takes the next step this season as a paid on-field assistant, who will be tasked with coaching the Texas hitters.

During his time at Texas, Tulo has helped oversee some of the most prolific offenses at Disch-Falk Field, including the two highest home run totals in 2021 and 2024.

Tulowitzki was previously on the staff of USA Baseball in the Summer of 2021, working with both the Collegiate National Team and the 13U/14U athlete development program. For his work in 2021, he was named 2021 USA Baseball Volunteer Coach of the Year.

2x Gold Glove winner
2x Silver Slugger winner

Assistant Coach: Max Weiner

Analysis: For a program that lacked depth and development on the pitching side, Coach Weiner was an absolute must have. A pitching coach that has been extremely successful in his previous roles, he has the task of turning around a staff that had an ERA of 4.91 last season. His name was also one that A&M fans were yelling to make him the head coach upon the departure of Schlossnagle. That is the kind of impact he had in just one year there. Further evidence of his impact is the fact that Texas has flipped four players from the 2025 Texas A&M class, each of which have been pitchers. He connects with kids, acting as a mentor on both the mechanics side of pitching, but also on the mental game as well. Big hire!

When LSU poached pitching coach Nate Yeskie from Texas A&M after the 2023 season, Schlossnagle wasted no time in going out and getting one of the biggest up and coming coaches there is. Formerly the pitching coordinator with the Seattle Mariners, Coach Weiner helped the A&M reach a new program level, finishing as the CWS runner-up. The 2024 squad had some outstanding hitting, but the pitching staff cannot be understated. A&M finished fourth nationally with a 3.86 ERA, a nation-leading 12 shutouts, and a school record 715 strikeouts. Weiner helped reliever Aschenbeck win the Stopper of the Year award, while helping develop numerous other pitchers to career best years.

Weiner is known for his “Control the Zone” mantra which emphasizes first pitch strikes, getting ahead in the count, and limiting walks. He is also known for the organization he stared, The Arm Farm, which is an online platform for pitching development.

During his time at both Texas A&M and with the Seattle Mariners, numerous pitchers say increases in their velo and control, while also avoiding major injury.

Strength & Conditioning: Matt Couch

Analysis: Keeping Matt Couch is another win for Texas. Couch is extremely talented at his role and helps players maximize their growth in good and sustainable ways. In addition, Couch is a guy that is very well liked by the team members, and he helps add further continuity, especially during the off-season months.

Director of Operations: Drew Bishop

Analysis: Bish is back! It would be hard to find someone as suited for this role as Drew. He loves Texas, he loves baseball, and he is extremely knowledgeable about the high school and college baseball scene. In addition, Drew understands what it takes to have a program on top and what it will take to get Texas there again.

Here is a quote from Dustin McComas on Drew, “There isn't anything Drew can't do. He's the perfect person for that role and not just because he's done it extremely well for 13 years already. He knows everyone. More importantly, he's respected by everyone. That's not an accident. No one loves Texas more and represents what it stands for better than Drew. He knows what Texas Baseball looks like, sounds like, acts like and how it operates when it's TEXAS BASEBALL.”

Drew Bishop played baseball at Texas for four seasons under Augie Garrido, including being part of the 2005 squad that won the national title his freshman year. After his playing time at Texas was done, he joined Garrido’s staff as Director of Operations, a role that he held for 13 years. Most recently, Bishop has worked as the Director of Scouting for the organization FiveTool.

Director of Program Development: Chuck Box

Analysis: The addition of Chuck to the Texas program is important because he is the guy behind the scenes that helps run the program for Schlossnagle and staff. A talented coach in his own right at various levels of baseball, Chuck is very well respected within the coaching community. As Butch Chaffin stated, “Chuck Box…The straw that stirs the drink”.

Chuck has been in and around baseball for years and is highly respected amongst the coaching community. He has 25 years as a head coach, amassing a 735-326 record. In addition to a long coaching career, he has been a scout for USA Baseball as well.
