Baseball isn’t just back, it is back at the Disch!

The coldest place in Austin will see the Texas Longhorns host the Dartmouth Big Green for the opening home game and home series in the 2025 season.

After the Tuesday night game against Houston Cougars was cancelled due to bad weather, the Horns will look to brave the elements as the nerds from the Ivy League come to town. With just 16 games, now down to 15 due to cancellation, before SEC conference play kicks off, these early season games are vital for the Horns hitting and pitching staffs to continue to develop, work, and refine their approaches.

Despite winning just 13 games last season, the Big Green return seven of its top ten arms from the 2024 season, including multiple guys from the starting rotation, so the one thing they will not lack is experience. Whether that experience will translate into more wins is yet to be determined, but Dartmouth certainly isn’t afraid of competition as they kick off their 2025 season at #16 Texas, then heading to Charlottesville for a three-game series at #2 Virginia Cavaliers. Dartmouth then heads to Charleston to face a spunky College of Charleston team for a three-game series. Nerds they may be, afraid of competition they are not.

Offensively, Dartmouth should not scare Coach Max Weiner and the rest of the arm farm, despite returning six of their top 10 hitters from last year's squad. As a team, Dartmouth hit just .264, with an OPS of .744, 25 home runs, and an OB% of .362. Dartmouth also lost both of their top home run hitters from last year’s squad. For reference, Max Belyeu and Jalin Flores combined to hit 11 mores than the entire Dartmouth lineup in 2024.

The other unfortunate aspect of this weekend series is that a northern team like Dartmouth is coming to Texas to get outside and play some ball, but unfortunately will be met with temps hovering just above freezing on Friday and in the high 30s on Saturday (assuming no changes). Sunday does look nice though with temps slated to be in the high 50s and sunny…so there is always that.

Due to the weather expected this weekend, I would not expect a lot of exciting baseball as guys will be looking to stay warm and get through it.
