MUSINGS FROM THE DISCH

What happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas.

Well, let us all hope that saying is only partially true. The Texas offense and starting pitching needs to continue the progression that we saw in Vegas. The fielding errors and bullpen issues that surfaced need to stay in Vegas and be wiped from the memory.

Overall, this was a great weekend for the Horns, going on the road and facing some teams that offered very different views. Yes, it is true that Texas did not face a Top 25 team, but they put a lot of positives on paper and got some guys going offensively that had started the season slowly. I will state emphatically that this team is not complete and still has a long ways to go, but wins are wins and Texas needs to continue stacking those. In addition, the Horns showed that regardless of what the scoreboard showed and what the situation was in game, the Horns battled. This team clearly has a lot of fun being together and has continued to gel and come together.

With a five game home stand in front of the Horns, they have the opportunity to continue creating momentum and go into Starkville to kick off SEC play on a high note. So much about baseball is confidence and the mental aspect of the game and the Texas staff continues make that a huge focus on what they do.

Teams that impressed this weekend: Tennessee, Clemson, Arizona, Oklahoma State, Auburn, UTRGV
Teams that disappointed this weekend: Texas A&M, TCU, Mississippi State, Wake Forest, Texas Tech, Missouri

USELESS STAT(S) OF THE DAY
  • Jalin Flores has had a quiet start to the season. Starting with his double last week Tuesday against Incarnate Word, that slow start may be over with.
  • Jalin Flores – this weekend: 5-10 (.500) – 2 HR; 3 2B; 4 RBI
  • Easton Winfield: first 6 games (2-10); Against Illinois (2-3) – small data point, but progress!
  • Ethan Mendoza: first 5 games (2-12); past 5 games (12-21) - the Texas native has been on fire the past 5 games!

MID WEEK PREVIEW
  • Opponent: Texas A&M Corpus Christi (6-6, 0-0 Southland)
  • Date: Tues March 4th
  • Time: 630pm
  • Where: Disch-Falk Field
  • TV: SEC Network+

History:
  • First Met: 2001
  • All-Time Record: 25-6 (19-5 at Disch-Falk)
  • Last Meeting: 2024 – Horns lost 1-4 in Austin as Texas gave up an early 3 run HR and struggled to get anything going offensively snapping a 5 game winning streak by the Horns
  • TAMU-CC is picked to finish 9th in the Southland Conference
  • The Islanders swept Prairie View A&M this past weekend, beating up on a poor squad

The Islanders have played a very tough schedule in reference to a team of their standing. Not a good hitting team. Lack of power throughout the lineup with only 4 HRs and 56 RBI on the season. This is a team that likes to run when it gets on base to put pressure on opposing staffs. 17 errors on the season suggests that the defense is a major question mark as well.

Pitching Matchups:
  • Texas RHP Jason Flores (1-0, 0.00 ERA, 0.33 WHIP, 3 IP) v. TAMU-CC (

Bullpen Leaders:
  • Cam Soliz (6 apps, 1 start, 0-2, 3 saves, 11.42 ERA, 2.19 WHIP, 8.2 IP)
  • Bryson Shea (4 apps, 1-0, 0.00 ERA, 0.39 WHIP, 7.2 IP)
  • David Dean (4 apps, 1-0, 1.04 ERA, 0.92 WHIP, 8.2 IP)

Offensive Leaders:
  • Karson Krowka (.435 BA, 1.161 OPS, .609 SLG%, .552 OB%, 2-2 SB)
  • Cade Sanchez (.349 BA, .951 OPS, .488 SLG%, .463 OB%, 1-2 SB)
  • Austin Russell (.333 BA, 1.045 OPS, 1 HR, .556 SLG%, .489 OB%, 1-1 SB)

Prediction
  • Texas wins
  • I suffered my first “loss” of the season as I predicted that Texas would go 2-1 this past weekend, but they went a perfect 3-0. I can live with that! On the season I am 9-1 overall
