In 2018, UTSA's Marcus Davenport was selected in the first round, 14th overall, by the New Orleans Saints. His stats that season were impressive:
  • Marcus Davenport (14) – UTSA – 55 tackles and 8.5 sacks

Fast forward to 2022, when Trey Moore (listed at 6'3" 245 lbs) breaks Davenport's school record with 18 tackles for a loss. Then, in 2023, Moore once again eclipsed Davenport with an insane statistical year on his way to winning the AAC Defensive Player of the year. A feat made even more impressive because he missed two games.
  • Trey Moore – UTSA – 45 tackles and 14 sacks

That's all well and good, but does that mean that Trey Moore would've been a first round pick in 2024?

Well, let's look at the stats of the Defensive Ends drafted in the first round of the 2024 NFL draft:
  • Laiatu Latu (15th overall) – UCLA – 49 tackles and 13 sacks
  • Dallas Turner (17th overall) – Alabama – 53 tackles and 10 sacks
  • Jared Verse (19th overall) – Florida State – 41 tackles and 9 sacks
  • Chop Robinson (21th overall) – Penn State – 15 tackles and 4 sacks
  • Darius Robinson (27th overall) – Missouri – 43 tackles and 8.5 sacks
Translation? Trey Moore had more sacks than every first–round pick in the 2024 draft and more tackles than three of them. Skeptics may say that it will be difficult for Moore to replicate in the SEC what he did in the AAC. Perhaps. But that didn't stop New Orleans from drafting Marcus Davenport.

TL;DR – If he does at Texas anywhere near what he did at UTSA, Texas got themselves a first–round draft pick when they snagged Trey Moore in the portal.

Enjoy:
