Safety JD Coffey is one of the top prospects in the country and he’s holding close to 30 scholarship offers, but the Kennedale standout isn’t just sitting around and waiting for the recruiting process to come to him.
Prior to the February dead period, Coffey took an unofficial visit to Texas. On Sunday, the first day after the dead period ended, it was Baylor’s turn to host the Rivals250 safety on an unofficial visit. Later this month, Coffey will make the rounds to see Oregon, Washington and LSU, and he’ll be back in Austin on March 26 for a second look at Texas.
On his January visit to UT, Coffey got a chance to meet new Texas defensive coordinator Chris Ash and get a better feel for what the Longhorn defense will look like under Ash’s leadership.
“The main thing I liked was getting to meet the new coach Ash,” Coffey said. “They had a lot of new coaches so I met a lot of them. I liked seeing the scheme of new Texas defense and meeting the new coaches.”
Coffey said he likes what he heard from Ash and feels he’d fit in well with what Texas wants to run.
“I like the way they run their defense. He said he likes physical, good football players. I got a feel for what he likes to do,” Coffey said. “I feel like defense he runs, it’s very similar to what we run at high school.”
It’s still early for Coffey and he doesn’t have a formal list of favorites, but he does admit that two in-state programs have definitely caught his attention.
“Baylor and Texas for sure since they’re close to home,” Coffey said about schools that are standing out. “I haven’t looked at a lot of schools so I’m still taking them in. But Baylor and Texas for sure.”
Coffey plans to take his official visits this spring and summer, and would like to commit before his senior season begins. The 6-0, 175-pounder is a four-star prospect and is ranked No. 112 nationally.
