CLICK HERE FOR THE UPDATED 2023 LSR TOP 100 List
Here we are...
It's time to basically put the 2023 LSR Top 100 list to bed. Oh, I reserve the right to tweak the list one more time before the final NSD, but I don't have plans to.
I feel very good about it.
Let me start out by saying that I think the 2023 in-sate recruting class might be as deep as I've ever seen in the last 30 years. 60 four-star prospects would be an outstanding year and you can make a case that the 2023 class has 80+. I've never seen that.
Better than that, I think it's incredibly strong with high end talent.
I've got 16 super blues in my rankings. I've got another 5 that I considered for super blue status.
The breakdown looks a little like.
6.1 (1-5)
6.0+ (6-8)
6.0 (9-16)
5.9+ (17-21)
5.9 (22-29)
5.8 (30-78)
5.7 (79+)
Let's talk about the players.
1. DE David Hicks
Rivals: 1
247: 2
ESPN: 2
ON3: 3
The Aggie signee locked in the No.1 spot with a dominant performance in Orlando in the week of the AA-game. It just feels like it this guy can stay healthy, he's going to be a second-day NFL Draft pick at worst.
2. LB Anthony Hill
Rivals: 3
247: 4
ESPN: 3
ON3: 13
Nothing changed. Hicks and Hill have been 1-2 for me for most of the evaluation process. 60 percent of the 5-star linebackers from Texas since 2002 (that have finished college football) have been drafted in day two of the draft. I'm not really sure I understand on3's evaluation of Hill at all.
3. DB Peyton Bowen
Rivals: 2
247: 7
ESPN: 4
ON3: 2
The Sooners got a great player. I've been convinced that he's a special prospect. I gave some consideration to moving him into the No.1 spot. Texas defensive backs in this ranking area have been worth their weight in gold. There's probably a 75-percent chance that he ends up being an NFL player.
4. Johntay Cook
Rivals: 5
247: 5
ESPN: 5
ON3: 12
Cook left Orlando having played himself into the Zach Branch territory of playmakers. He's going to get his 5 star from Rivals on Monday IMO. I don't really understand the On3 ranking. Jalen Hale isn't better than Cook. Period.
5. Malik Muhammad
Rivals: 7
247: 14
ESPN: 11
ON3: 15
I'm going to be the only rankings that has Muhammad as a 5-star. My grade on him is an outlier. I'm comfortable with that. This guy has been an awesome high school player at the highest level of Texas HS football and he's more than held his own at every national event he's ever participated in. I'm surprised on this island. I do believe he'll be the highest ranking high 4 star when his rating is updated this week.
6. Jackson Arnold
Rivals: 4
247: 1
ESPN: 1
ON3: 1
I guess it just comes down to the fact that I don't know that I see a 5-star player. He's incredible as a high school player, but I watch him and wonder if I think I'm watching a future 1st round pick at quarterback. That's not what my eyes see. It's no insult to think a kid is national top 35ish instead of national top 10-25. In the Rivals era of recruiting, that means he's got about a 60-percent chance of being an NFL player, so we're splitting hairs here. He was just pretty good during the week of this year's All-American game. I thought Dante Moore looked like a true 5-star quarterback and was on a different level than Arnold.
7. Javien Toviano
Rivals: 8
247: 16
ESPN: 6
ON3: 28
Just look at this dude's senior film. Watch it all, but definitely watch the play at 1:33. Watch him on special teams at 1:52. The kid is probably a safety at the next level, but he can play bump and run, he makes plays all over the field and he's just a damn good football player. He's got a great frame. His athleticism oozes on the field. I really don't understand the On3 ranking.
8. Colton Vasek
Rivals: 11
247: 40
ESPN: 30
ON3: 19
Again, just look at four games from Vasek's senior film. This is what Bryan Pickryl looked like when he was in high school. It's been 20 years, but a 2.0 version without back problems has arrived. When in doubt, you can't rank non-tweener in-state defensive ends (6-4+/230) prospects high enough. They hit at near five-star level rates over the last 20 years,
9. Reuben Owens
Rivals: 5
247: 3
ESPN: 7
ON3: 4
At the end of the day, I just don't think he's a 5-star. Most folks believe he's a high 4 star, which is where I have him slotted.
10. Ryan Nibelett
Rivals: 13
247: 11
ESPN: 17
ON3: 21
Niblett's only peer as an athlete in the 2023 recruiting class is Zachariah Branch, who is a top 10 prospect in the nation. He has special burst and speed, which has to be taken into consideration when projecting to the next level. I like a lot of receivers in this state, but he's the best athlete out of them all and his overall game is further ahead than he's given credit for, as evidenced at the All-America week. Is it me or does On3 not like any kid committed to Texas?
11. WR Jaquaize Pettaway
Rivals: 16
247: 8
ESPN: 8
ON3: 39
I love Pettaway for the same reasons I love Niblett. In fact, Pettaway has a better 200 meters time than Nibless does. He's an absolute playmaker. Clearly On3 has a wildly different rating on him. This kid is a total game-breaker.
12. CB Calvin Simpson Hunt
Rivals: 12
247: 30
ESPN: 26
ON3: 5
I agree with On3 more than I disagree with them this time. I think we're talking about a super blue chip defensive back. He's a physical, tough cornerback with outstanding speed. Not Pettaway or Niblett speed, but still very damn fast.
13. Edge Braylon Shelby
Rivals: 14
247: 9
ESPN: 46
ON3: 6
I wasn't quite as impressed or overwhelmed by his senior play as I was by his junior play. Still, I think he's a super blue chip prospect, but maybe not quite a top 10 prospect this year because of the depth of the class. His senior film simply isn't better than the guys I have above him on the list.
14. Ath Jelani McDonald
Rivals: 18
247: 20
ESPN: 29
ON3: 7
I'm ok with ranking him anywhere between 9th and 17th on the list. A super blue-chipper. He won me fully over in San Antonio when he won Alex Dunlap over.
15. TE Ka'Morreun Pimpton
Rivals: 32
247: 38
ESPN: 48
ON3: 18
Tight ends of his quality are worth their weight in gold. 75% of the tight end prospects from Texas rated 5.9 or higher from 2002-2017 from the state of Texas have been drafted by NFL teams. The fact that this kid is a freak if an athlete and a brainiac off the field makes me love him.
16. CB Jaylon Braxton
Rivals: 35
247: 26
ESPN: 34
ON3: 16
Love his senior film. He's a supr blue chip prospect.
17. Ath Samuel Omosigho
Rivals: 22
247: 10
ESPN: 19
ON3: 9
I think he's a little undersized for his best position, but I understand those that might like him a little more than I do. He's a bad ass on the field.
18. WR Cordale Russell
Rivals: 27
247: 17
ESPN: 44
ON3: 8
Tussell has great high point ball skills and he nearly won me over as a senior by having me slap a super blue chip label on him, but he's not as explosive as the wide receivers above him.
19. DL Jordan Renaud
Rivals: 17
247: 21
ESPN: 10
ON3: 11
20. WR Jalen Hale
Rivals: 10
247: 6
ESPN: 9
ON3: 10
I just don't think he's as dangerous with the ball in his hands as the other wide receivers rated above him on this list. Don't get me wrong, he's really good, but he's not special IMO.
21. WR Kyle Parker
Rivals: 42
247: 70
ESPN: 56
ON3: 57
Hello, Island! I consider this guy a @Cole Patterson special. Patterosn has raved about this kid all year and I have to admit he won me over during a dominant senior season at Lovejoy.
22. DE Enow Etta
Rivals: 41
247: 16
ESPN: 20
ON3: 26
This dude checks a kit of boxes as a non-Tweener defensive end. I'd understand having him as high as ESPN does.
23. WR Jaden Greathouse
Rivals: 21
247: 50
ESPN: 21
ON3: 30
Part of me think he's slightly too low and the other part of me thinks he's a little too high.
24. LB S'Maje Burrell
Rivals: 52
247: 123
ESPN: 39
ON3: 33
At the end of the day, Burrell brings the perfect size, athleticism and skill set to the table in the modern linebacker. Throw in the fact that he's a guy that I've had a crush on for a while and it's no surprise I have him higher than anyone. This is me leaning on the rankings data that I have worked hard on to produce profiles that point towards players most likely to succeed.
25. DL Markis Deal
Rivals: 45
247: 12
ESPN: 32
ON3: 20
I think he's an offensive lineman more than a defensive lineman.
26. OL T.J. Shanahan
Rivals: 9
247: 64
ESPN: 23
ON3: 62
The weirdest rankings situation in a while.
27. LB Derion Gullette
Rivals: 26
247: 56
ESPN: 24
ON3: 17
There's a world out there where this kid is in the top 16, but the injury situation has me placing him just outside of that range.
28. WR Mikel Harrison-Pilot
Rivals: 36
247: 25
ESPN: 31
ON3: 52
Other than On3, there's a pretty strong consensus with this player.
29. OL Ian Reed
Rivals: 31
247: 46
ESPN: 53
ON3: 83
This guy was a beast as a senior. We might all have him underrated.
30 CB Jayvon Thomas
Rivals: 15
247: 27
ESPN: 22
ON3: 49
There's no real reason to quibble about any space in the rankings between 28-80 at this point, if we're being completely honest.
31. DB Warren Robinson
Rivals: 59
247: 61
ESPN: 65
ON3: 28
Hey look, On3 and I agree on a guy!
32. DE Johnny Bowens
Rivals: 37
247: 32
ESPN: 51
ON3: 31
Here come the defensive ends that I have ranked higher than just about any position in this area.
33. CB Bravion Rogers
Rivals: 25
247: 13
ESPN: 13
ON3: 32
I just don't think this guy is a super blue chip prospect. I think he;'s perfectly slotted in the low end of the mid four stars.
34. DB Dalton Brooks
Rivals: 33
247: 23
ESPN: 14
ON3: 14
A dominant player at a lower classification of football, I just have doubts about his athleticism and speed when compared to the rest of the elite players in this class. He's just never convinced me.
35. Trevor Goosby
Rivals: 71
247: 90
ESPN: NR
ON3: 34
He might have a long ways before he hits his upside, but he has more upside than any remaining offensive lineman in the class. A total lottery ticket.
36. TE Jaden Platt
Rivals: 44
247: 19
ESPN: 57
ON3: 61
Why do I have Platt ranked this high? It's simple... tight ends of his ability and within this tier turn out to be NFL players at very high rates. He got a positional value bump from me.
37. DE Zachary Chapman
Rivals: 96
247: 196
ESPN: NR
ON3: 25
You know I love me some non Tweener defensive ends. I think everyone other than On3 is missing the boat on this kid.
38. OL Harris Sewell
Rivals: 24
247: 34
ESPN: 15
ON3: 63
Offensive linemen in this phase of the rankings from the state of Texas have historically high bust rated. Considering I think the four-star talent goes deep into the 70s of this year's talent pool, you can make the case that an unproven West Texas prospect might be a little too high at this spot.
39. DE Avion Carter
Rivals: 56
247: 48
ESPN: 33
ON3: 78
Look kids, another non Tweener defensive end. I'm putting all my coins in positional value and this kid has a ton of it with his body type and raw athleticism.
40. OL Jaydon Chatman
Rivals: 34
247: 47
ESPN: 61
ON3: 23
He's a solid four-star line prospect, but the same that I said of Sewell is true of Chatman. Non-super blue chip offensive linemen have less historical value than other positions, which means this spot could be too high for him. No one has a super blue chip ranking on him, so it's all about the same.
41. QB Austin Novosad
Rivals: 20
247: 15
ESPN: 43
ON3: 24
What's this? Me underrating an Austin-area quaterback? Is that possible?
42. DE Isaiah Crawford
Rivals: 30
247: 43
ESPN: 47
ON3: 64
He's another non-Tweener defensive end prospect with a lot of upside. Mikey likes him.
43. WR Jonah Wilson
Rivals: 62
247: 49
ESPN: 46
ON3: 48
We all agree. A rock solid four star prospect.
44. Ath Micah Bell
Rivals: 24
247: 28
ESPN: 18
ON3: 92
No one has him ranked as a super blue chip, but it feels like I'm in the middle of different mid to low four-star level thoughts.
45. WR Braylon James
Rivals: 25
247: 22
ESPN: 12
ON3: 59
I'm completely comfortable with my ranking of him here.
46. RB Kedrick Reescano
Rivals: 23
247: 36
ESPN: 45
ON3: 22
WE all agree that he's not super blue chip. I've got him a little lower than everyone else because running backs in the 5.9 and 5.8 ranges tend to under-perform vs. other positions in terms of NFL development.
47. Ath Randon Fontenette
Rivals: 53
247: 69
ESPN: 55
ON3: 27
I have a thing with kids from Brazosport. It feels like I've loved a million of them and they all disappear by year two of college. Just a random thought.
48. WR Ashton Cozart
Rivals: 87
247: 37
ESPN: 16
ON3: 46
Man, talk about a wide range of opinions. I'm somewhere in the middle.
49. RB Quinton Joyner
Rivals: 19
247: 24
ESPN: 67
ON3: 81
Once again, I'm kind of in the middle of the extremes. It feels like the right sweet spot.
50. DB CJ Blocker
Rivals: 67
247: 33
ESPN: 71
ON3: 43
We're all in agreement that he's a low four star prospect.
****
Before anyone asks, I would have the out of state commits ranked like this...
QB Arch Manning (1)
RB Cedric Baxter (5-8)
DB Derek Williams (5-8)
ST Sydir Mitchell (18-24)
WR Deandre Moore (18-24)
LB Tausili Akana (23-33)
LB Liona Lefau (34-80)
TE Spencer Shannon (70-80)
OL Payton Kirkland (35-55)
TE William Randle (85-100)

Hello, Island! I consider this guy a @Cole Patterson special. Patterosn has raved about this kid all year and I have to admit he won me over during a dominant senior season at Lovejoy.
22. DE Enow Etta

There's no real reason to quibble about any space in the rankings between 28-80 at this point, if we're being completely honest.
31. DB Warren Robinson
Rivals: 59
247: 61
ESPN: 65
ON3: 28
Hey look, On3 and I agree on a guy!
32. DE Johnny Bowens
Rivals: 37
247: 32
ESPN: 51
ON3: 31
Here come the defensive ends that I have ranked higher than just about any position in this area.
33. CB Bravion Rogers
Rivals: 25
247: 13
ESPN: 13
ON3: 32
I just don't think this guy is a super blue chip prospect. I think he;'s perfectly slotted in the low end of the mid four stars.
34. DB Dalton Brooks
Rivals: 33
247: 23
ESPN: 14
ON3: 14
A dominant player at a lower classification of football, I just have doubts about his athleticism and speed when compared to the rest of the elite players in this class. He's just never convinced me.
35. Trevor Goosby
Rivals: 71
247: 90
ESPN: NR
ON3: 34
He might have a long ways before he hits his upside, but he has more upside than any remaining offensive lineman in the class. A total lottery ticket.
36. TE Jaden Platt
Rivals: 44
247: 19
ESPN: 57
ON3: 61
Why do I have Platt ranked this high? It's simple... tight ends of his ability and within this tier turn out to be NFL players at very high rates. He got a positional value bump from me.
37. DE Zachary Chapman
Rivals: 96
247: 196
ESPN: NR
ON3: 25
You know I love me some non Tweener defensive ends. I think everyone other than On3 is missing the boat on this kid.
38. OL Harris Sewell
Rivals: 24
247: 34
ESPN: 15
ON3: 63
Offensive linemen in this phase of the rankings from the state of Texas have historically high bust rated. Considering I think the four-star talent goes deep into the 70s of this year's talent pool, you can make the case that an unproven West Texas prospect might be a little too high at this spot.
39. DE Avion Carter
Rivals: 56
247: 48
ESPN: 33
ON3: 78
Look kids, another non Tweener defensive end. I'm putting all my coins in positional value and this kid has a ton of it with his body type and raw athleticism.
40. OL Jaydon Chatman
Rivals: 34
247: 47
ESPN: 61
ON3: 23
He's a solid four-star line prospect, but the same that I said of Sewell is true of Chatman. Non-super blue chip offensive linemen have less historical value than other positions, which means this spot could be too high for him. No one has a super blue chip ranking on him, so it's all about the same.
41. QB Austin Novosad
Rivals: 20
247: 15
ESPN: 43
ON3: 24
What's this? Me underrating an Austin-area quaterback? Is that possible?
42. DE Isaiah Crawford
Rivals: 30
247: 43
ESPN: 47
ON3: 64
He's another non-Tweener defensive end prospect with a lot of upside. Mikey likes him.
43. WR Jonah Wilson
Rivals: 62
247: 49
ESPN: 46
ON3: 48
We all agree. A rock solid four star prospect.
44. Ath Micah Bell
Rivals: 24
247: 28
ESPN: 18
ON3: 92
No one has him ranked as a super blue chip, but it feels like I'm in the middle of different mid to low four-star level thoughts.
45. WR Braylon James
Rivals: 25
247: 22
ESPN: 12
ON3: 59
I'm completely comfortable with my ranking of him here.
46. RB Kedrick Reescano
Rivals: 23
247: 36
ESPN: 45
ON3: 22
WE all agree that he's not super blue chip. I've got him a little lower than everyone else because running backs in the 5.9 and 5.8 ranges tend to under-perform vs. other positions in terms of NFL development.
47. Ath Randon Fontenette
Rivals: 53
247: 69
ESPN: 55
ON3: 27
I have a thing with kids from Brazosport. It feels like I've loved a million of them and they all disappear by year two of college. Just a random thought.
48. WR Ashton Cozart
Rivals: 87
247: 37
ESPN: 16
ON3: 46
Man, talk about a wide range of opinions. I'm somewhere in the middle.
49. RB Quinton Joyner
Rivals: 19
247: 24
ESPN: 67
ON3: 81
Once again, I'm kind of in the middle of the extremes. It feels like the right sweet spot.
50. DB CJ Blocker
Rivals: 67
247: 33
ESPN: 71
ON3: 43
We're all in agreement that he's a low four star prospect.
****
Before anyone asks, I would have the out of state commits ranked like this...
QB Arch Manning (1)
RB Cedric Baxter (5-8)
DB Derek Williams (5-8)
ST Sydir Mitchell (18-24)
WR Deandre Moore (18-24)
LB Tausili Akana (23-33)
LB Liona Lefau (34-80)
TE Spencer Shannon (70-80)
OL Payton Kirkland (35-55)
TE William Randle (85-100)
